Depression is a real disease. It can affect anyone at anytime. It may be triggered by a traumatic event, the hormone shifts in young adulthood, or for no apparent reason at all. Some people are even born chemically prone to it. It is important to note that depression is usually not well understood by people who have never experienced it; therefore, if you are suffering from it, you may feel very isolated or abandoned by people that really do care about you but don't know how to help.
Fortunately (or not?), poets are an "emotional bunch" and seem to possess an instinctive knowledge of the human heart. Further, poetry provides us an excellent outlet for our feelings because we are not restricted to language a counselor would understand. We can speak in abstracts, images, or utter gibberish if we like, and perhaps create something beautiful. Given this, I decided to create a group specially designed to support young poets who suffer from depression. Group members, ranging in age from 13 to 19, will help other young poets not only improve their writing but cope with their depression. In this way, everyone receives support and attention, and everyone gives something back.
