My poetry style emerges as patterns, unexpected but clear patterns. I love the sound of poetry being read aloud, so all of my words are chosen for the way they will sound outloud -- rhythms, multi-syllabic words running, chopped by short hard sounds, alliterations -- anything that moves the poem and the listener to hear things differently.
I write about experiences that I am trying to figure out as I search for meaning. I also write poems as gifts to many family members for special occasions so I try to capture who they are and why I appreciate them. 2 examples of this are: "Dad's Whistling" and "Like a Windmill."
I have just published my first book which includes two of my poems, and I'm ABD on a doctorate in education. I'm also an adjunct professor of communication. I'm fascinated by learning how adults learn. While poetry is not an overt part of my academic life, I find that poetry offers the purest form of playing with words and sounds to convey meaning.
I just defended my dissertation and while that multi-year writing project took me away from poetry, I learned so much about writing! I also learned a lot about myself and pursuing dreams relentlessly.
I welcome feedback and discussion. I'm amazed to discover this many poets out there! You all inspire me to greatness.
