I was always told write what you know, or what you feel or hope to feel. Experience is life's way of showing us that we are alive whether it be good or bad it makes us who we are. But we are only a better person if we learn from these experiences and understand them. Writing helps me to understand where, when and why I have felt these emotions. It's like a written timeline that I can always go back to remember.
