People are an enigma, you never know from one moment to the next what to expect. Mercurial are the emotions of the common and not so common Homo sapiens, and that is where poetry and creative writing come into effect. Poetry is not about the greater truth, or telling a story. No it is about expressing a feeling an emotion, freezing a moment in time showing the truth then that is in the expression and how it makes one feel. A small piece of the writer goes into each and every poetic endeavor, read carefully and in time you can learn more about the writer than you ever could just by talking to them. And remember that no poem is every completely finished, it is as mercurial as the emotions of the one who has put their feelings into words and can change with the tides.
