Joined 02.02.06.......I'm finding I like this place....I think I'll stay a while...LOL...and invariably do....longer than I intend to....LOL
I started writing poetry last year Sept time infact.....after an 'event' in my life......won't go into details.....
May be this may help.....one of my very first efforts....crap I know....but hey!
The Reluctant Poet
I sit here writing poetry almost everyday
And sometimes half the night
I don’t know where it’s come from
But it’s given me a fright
I have no inkling how it started
It just comes into my head
The other night an idea struck
I had to leap right out of bed
I had started writing a book of my life
As an exercise and form of therapy
Then suddenly things just started to rhyme
Writing poetry…absurd…what me?
I can be quite a deep thinker
And worry about the world around
From corrupted religions in my view
To politics that are never quite sound
I can also be quite light and shallow
A little humour can be a ball
I am often materialistic
Well to be honest aren’t we all
I’ve even written a poem about nature
Now that’s a turn up for the books
I’ll be taking up gardening next
What else will get me hooked?
Knitting, crochet and needlework
Well maybe not them perhaps
Drawing, painting and watercolours
An artist…oh no…I think I’m crap
Has it always been inside me?
The result of my overdose maybe
The tablets causing a fusion of synapses
Ah… my current state of mind , I see
So it is with reluctance I continue
I have nothing better to do at this time
A Poet?...I’d never have thought it
How ridiculously sublime!
Old Blighty….
If I were to say to you, Robin Hood
You’d all know where I’m from
A little town in the heart of England
Now a city called Nottingham
World famous for ‘Stealing from the rich
And giving to the poor’, so the legend says
Robin put our town on the map
The evil sheriff? Well he’s still about today!
Between them they left a legacy
Of wrong deeds being set right
By ordinary people of the land
United in their fight
But that is in the history books
And there remains controversy
History paints a pretty picture
But is there truth and honesty?
I was born there in ’57, and left at seventeen
A life of adventure, a world I didn't know
I left my home, my friends and town behind.
To become a Royal Marines Commando
Curious now, that I’ve settled in Plymouth
From whence the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ set sail
The ‘Mayflower’ steps are still standing there
A tribute to those who did not quail
Their quest? To start a whole new way of life,
In the Americas they settled and found happiness
Though their lives they put in danger
They stood firm, with resolve and steadfastness
So it follows that because we share our ancestry
We’re half way to globalisation…nay! Unification
We ‘Europeans', the ‘Yanks’ and the ‘Brits’
The sooner we all become one,
..............the better our civilisation.
