Your best prewrite

JUDGES! Please IM me your lists as soon as possible.  Deadline is the end of this week.

NEWS
I know that a lot of you are antsy to see who wins.  I honestly don't know, I am less than halfway through all the poems, but there's a lot of true masterpieces, and it will be hard to pick a winner.  I will keep the contest open as long as I take to comment on all the poems, collaborate with my judges, run the final decicsion through some of the other judges, and get to the computer to finish this up.  Please, be patient. Thank you.
P.S. If you want to judge, there's still time.  IM me for more info. I'd love as many opinions as possible. If you don't have the time to read, tell me, and I'll just have you read the final 13 poems.

I've been thinking about adding the contest for a while, but have been putting it off.  Then today I found a contest with a very similar topic, and I was like "Damn, if I don't post this contest sometimes soon someone is gonna get the same idea I did." So here it is.

I want you to submit a prewrite, just one.  Everybody is welcome to do it.  But I don't want you submitting just any old prewrite, I want it to be your favorite piece that you are extremely proud of.  It might be the one that's won you a gold trophy.  It might be the one that you feel everybody overlooked when you posted it.  The only thing that I don't want you to do is thinking "Gee, a prewrite, let's submit the first thing that comes to my mind." Please, before you submit, think about it.  I want to see the best of AllPoetry.

Everyone who comes across this page and has written at least one poem in their life should enter.  There's no limits on the topic, it can be horror, erotica, love, hope, spiritual, freeverse, with rhyming, whatever you want it to be as long as it's a piece you love.

If you feel like it, put an explanation on why you like the piece in your author's comments...You don't have to, but it'd be interesting to know why you like it.

And since "the best" means the only, I will accept only one entry from each one of you.  Please don't be shy, submit your best work!
I repeat, ONLY ONE ENTRY! If I receive more than one, all will be disqualified.  If you made a mistake, IM me, don't wait.

First place gets 300 points, second and third will get some points, although I am not quite sure how much.  Depends on how good they are. There also will be at least ten honorable mentions.  I also promise to comment on every poem.

JUDGING
Of course I am not planning to judge the whole thing by myself.  Who am I to say what the best of the best looks like? So if you want to contribute, please IM me.  If you decide to help, I won't make you do much, just read some poems and pick your favorites.  You can even be a judge if you submitted a poem - you just won't judge your own work.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on February 23, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
YES! I am finally done judging! I tried to comment on every poem, but even if I didn't comment on yours, it does not mean I didn't read it. I read every poem, some even more than once, and believe me, it took a while. Also, my lovely judges who stuck with me through this process (and not many stuck around), reviewed your poems and IM'd me their top ten lists. Here are the judges - terezin, harrietthespy, xEdGe0fSaNiTy, lovelyscars, queenie, TheOneRomeo, xomadelineox, ephemeral, and me. We all worked very hard and tried to be extremely objective. So here we go. It was a very tough decision to decide who will get the trophies and which poem will be in the top ten. Personally, after reading all your guys' poetry, I think that I could randomly draw any poem and it would be worth winning. I had many different types of poems submitted, although I felt that I could use more humor. And I'm never again reading another suicidal poem - I've had enough of those. Other than that, the experience was just amazing. Except for the last part - picking the winners. After comparing my judges' lists and my own here are the winners:

Gold (300 pts.) - Blue-Eyed Jesus, a Love Poem by Automatic Pilate
Though long, you guys should really take the time to read it. I'm glad I did, because it turned out to be one of the best poems I've read in my life. Do not be intimidated by the title, it is much more than it seems at first. I, as a non-Christian, was reluctant to read a poem with "Jesus" in its title expecting monotonous preaching, but instead I read a terrific work of art.

Silver (150 pts.) - Surround me with Love by maureen
A lot of my judges said it was one of the best poems. It was one of the only poems that so many people agreed on. It's very short, but it's just lovely, with a lot of emotion and warmth in it.

Bronze (100 pts.) - You think? by chayanya
Also a piece a lot of people agreed on. It shows a lot of attitude, and is a piece definitely worth reading.

Top Ten (will get points according to my own liking of the poem)
    1. ART is in the EYE by repomen79
    2. Aberration by yasai
    3. One star – A thousand memories by ChatterboxJo
    4. A Modern Take On An Old Rhyme by hettie
    5. Reincarnation by Sunshine
    6. Cigarettes and Americana by VinceValentine
    7. I said …Damn by Lyrability
    8. Discovering belief in spring... by AngelEyes323
    9. The Mime by shomi
    10. the futility of war-shadowsong

I also wanted to mention Can I kiss you? by michaeld. It is a great erotica poem that touched my heart. Read it, you will love it.

So yes you can see, the winners and the top ten I tried to pick from different categories, and I really hope I succeeded in trying to make this a fun experience for everybody on AP. Please do not get upset if you did not win. This is the kind of contest where what matters is that you participated, not that you won. Every poem I read was a masterpiece and deserved that first place trophy. Thank you so much for participating!
    ~Anastasia

Whoo hoo.. Ill be sure to enter in here! Ive written quite a few poems that I really like.. but Ill be sure to think this over and submit which one I believe is best.. I like this it brings out the poem that most people would have seemed to overlook! Great idea.. its really though not as easy as it sounds so very complex!

Wow, good luck judging all these poems. I'll look forward to reading some of the entries! Great idea for the contest, if you don't have much of a life or have way too much time on your hands and don't mind reading a whole bunch of poems some of which I'm sure are not very good but most of them are though, I'm sure! *Breath* Whew! Ok, I'm done. Happy judging!

Heh...at first I kinda got offended by your remark "if you don't have much of a life or have way too much time on your hands," but it's all good. I don't have a lot of time on my hands, and *gasp* I do have a life...it's just that I love the idea of finding the best of the best...and I am not going to be the only one doing the judging, that would be biased...how can one person decide what is the best of the best? Thanks for wishing me good luck, I'm sure I'll need it...as well as a lot of time...=)

I've just entered "the best" poem. But, if I don't win does that mean it isn't the best anymore?? oh dear, this might be a little hard to deal with, depression sets in..confusion abounds, life as I now it will be changed forever.. hehe, pressures on to pick.."THE BEST"...HEHE ...fs

This is a REALLY good contest idea!! It's making me think which poem to enter...
I hope you find other AP members to help you judge! For the record, I would, but I barely had time to judge my last contest and I just created a new one.
Good luck judging!! I assume you will be needing it.

The idea is that everybody enters their best poem not to win, but to share the poem they consider the best with other people. Every poem submitted is special, and every poem deserves to win. I can assure you that the poem that wins gold in this contest will have to be a completely outstanding work of art. But there will be many poems that don't win, and that doesn't make them any worse. Just the fact that their author submitted them to this "The best of the best" contest shows that they are the best. Please understand that.

You've got some work ahead of you, dear...

I submitted "Crystal Teardrops" because it's the one poem I am most proud of, and the one I believe I poured the most heart and poetic effort into. (I'm posting my reason here instead of in the author's comments because I'm too lazy and tired to edit...lol). I hope you'll like it as much as I do. Good luck to everyone who has entered... Came across this in the shameless promo's and thought, what the heck. Not that I actually think I qualify as being "best of the best" but I note with some sadness that the writers I consider do fall in this category, they not all here!! Where are you my pretties?

As to the judging, good luck...and I'm glad you have invited others to help - it is too big a task for one set of taste buds to set to. It should be an interesting little adventure. Hope not too many hair follicles are distroyed in the process...

it was written only so that when i read it, it would make me think—i know that not all people like to or enjoy thinking but it has become dare i say a hobby of mine which actually brought me into the world of poetry
Anyways the poem just makes me refocus my life and think or realize what I want for others and myself

    Anastasia,
I just finished reading all of the comments that have been posted on your contest page and it is amazing to me how many people in this world are selfish and self centered. You would honestly think that, and especially here on AP, that people would be thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in an event such as your contest, especially considering you are attempting to bring together the “best of the best” if you will. It is my opinion that each and every poet on AP is the best for we each have out own style of writing, thinking and living. It saddens me when I see that there are so many people whom only think of the contest and “winning”, instead of looking at the greater picture of what you have stated you are attempting to bring about. I can honestly say that what you are doing is a monumental and very commendable act. Especially considering the fact that there are so many people on AP.
I am sure that there has been at least one time in all of our lives when we have gone to a poets home page here on AP, and thought “I wonder which poem they consider to be their greatest piece, or which one is their favorite?” I must say that to bring about an event such as this so that we may see that which each of us feels is out best work or favorite piece is a beautiful and major undertaking. Personally I must thank you for offering this contest for all of us.
Maybe if we all get together we might be able to have admin allow a site that will allow a cross reference page or category marking that which we believe is our best, so that we may change it as we catenate our pieces over the days, weeks, months, and years. It is just a thought.
I would also like to say in closing, that I can understand the reasoning behind why you keep re-opening the contest. Though I must say you definitely have your work cut out for you considering the sheer number and amount of truly beautiful and poetic pieces that are being entered. Each and every one of the pieces entered are exquisite and perfect in their rendering for they are all from the heart. May you and the judges whom are critiquing or assessing these pieces have clarity of mind and peace of heart upon completion of this contest. You will need it.
    Alimae

Reading these comments, I really don't think any sort of selfishness comes into it. We all have performance anxiety and wonder how our work stands up to any other poet. With a contest like this, the sheer number of people entering is overwhelming, and can cause the feeling of not being good enough. Alrighty, nuf rambling for me. Good luck everyone and don't lose hope! Just because your poem may not win a contest doesn't mean it isn't a good one. All that is important is that it was written from your soul.

AlimaeHP nicely said... I totally agree .. this is a very wonderful thing ... the collection of the best and I agree yet again.. there should be someway of letting everyone know that "this is my best piece" that is a great idea... and if you make a petition of sort... I am in.... lol.... and to the judges..... WOW... I want you to do something for me... I would like for you to stop reading for a second.... take a deep breath... hold it ... hold it... hold it.... okay.. now let it out.... now... just imagine that you had a one and a half inch New York strip setting in front of you smothered in a thick layer of montrial steak sauce... and aside of that was a nice plump baked potatoe, along with a plate of nice crispy fresh veggies, an ear of nice golden sweet juicy ripe corn on the cob.... and a nice refreshing drink... okay thats enough imagining .... NOW GET BACK TO WORK!!!! LOL... I am sorry.. I just had to do that.. you guys are working so hard.. for us.. and well... you need to relax a bit and take a break... I don't know of anyone on here who is in a rush.. I mean... yeah... I am in suspense to see the results... though I know I have no chance.. but I just wanna read the winning pieces... lol.. but anyway.. yeah.. I am gonna stop babbling now... THANKS EVER SO MUCH... YOU GUYS ARE GREAT... GOOD LUCK IN THE JUDGING.... AND WELL... DON'T OVERWORK YOURSELVES!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!

Glaze, you judge the contest the way you want to..and in YOUR own time.It is a wonderful contest,I did not enter to win as you say it gives Poets the opportunity to show their best work.
I am very impressed by you for having the guts to do this and to keep it open longer so more poets can enter to show their best work off..So be proud of yourself they are all wonderful entries, even if there are no winners, everyone wins as people view their work.Good luck my friend...You and your judges be the judge..NOT some of the ones who disagree.Angelica

WOW! I can't believe this! I am stunned! This is one of the best trophies I've ever won. I'm truly honored and I really appreciate it!!!

*Thank you very much, Anastasia (glazecovered), and all those who helped you judge this great contest.* Believe it or not, I counted the entries...I can't believe there were 512 (took a long time to count them). I intend to read a lot of them. I copied the list.

Thanks again! I feel like I won an Oscar (what I mean is...something really important to me). Pinch me...I must be dreaming!

    OMG! 512 poems! faints

I am definitely glad I did not have to judge. To all of the judges, you did a truly excellent job in your choices. Now I would like to suggest that you go out to a local spa, get pampered, do mindless things, for you deserve it, have a glass of wine, bottle of beer or what ever and just relax.

    Congratulations to all,
    Alimae

    P.S.
    Maureen,
I can not believe you actually counted them all. I have to give you kudos points for attempting let along actually managing to count all of the poems. Congratulations to you, and if you really want I will pinch you. Hehe,

Nah, enjoy the feeling of wining,

Umm...yeah. The contest is over, you can move on now. Insulting other people will never help you get first place.
