project poetry season one [multiround contest auditions]

Hii everyone.

You all might be surprised to be actually reading this, but yes. It is true. I am hosting my first multiround contest, project poetry.

Take note: if you are a multiround regular/know what you are doing, skip to the application.

My name is Chase. As a judge, I am honest & blunt. I have no problem telling someone I did not like his or her poem. I do have tack though. I will be respectful. This, however, does not mean I will baby or guarantee that I will enjoy your poem. I know what makes good poetry ranging from form, quickie, free-verse, rhyme & the sort.

That reminds me. I’m 17 & have a life. Don’t like this? Don’t enter. :]

As for the layout of this contest, it’s a bit amorphous. Do expect twists, turns, secrets, immunities, voting, & other assorted joys. Justin makes it hard to top a multiround contest. We’ll see how I do.

I am not sure how long this contest will be, but by doing quick math, it will be three months to four months. Yes, you read that correctly. Months. It may be less, it may be more though, depending on the attitudes/chemistry of the group. I hope to allow plenty of time for poems to be turned in. With this being said though, that does NOT, I repeat, does NOT give you any excuse what-so-ever to be late. I am flexible & human, don’t get me wrong, but pure laziness will not be accepted.

Note: Collaborations & solo work will be found here.

What are you competing for you ask? A few things. First of all, there will be a hefty prize of points at the end of this contest. I have yet to determine a total, but just know that I am not cheap & I am not poor. Trophies will be handed out also & points will go to the finalists of the contests. Trust me; your labors will not go without rewards. Second, you will of course have a wonderful time getting to know other poets, rekindling lovely friendships & maybe jumpstart your poetic ability/muse. I almost barfed at how made-for-tv that sounded. Finally, you will play for bragging rights because who doesn’t want to say they won a multiround contest. Psh.

There are, in fact, a few hoops you need to jump through to apply this contest. First thing would be to write a fresh poem for this contest. It needs to show me where you stand as a poet & what kind of things you can bring to the table. Don’t focus on pleasing me. Just make it what you do best. Second, please fill out this application & put it in your audition poem’s author’s notes. Even if I know you & I know what an amazing poet you are, you still need to fill it out, just so I can be equal & fair to everyone.

1. Name [Real & User]
2. Age
3. Amount of Poetic Experience
4. Typical/Strongest Style
5. Unusual/Weakest Style
6. Favorite Type of Inspiration
7. Amount of Multiround Experience
8. Some Accomplishments
9. One Fact I Don’t Know About You
10. Additional Comments You’d Like Me To Read

Also, I want you to know that by entering this contest, you are agreeing to a few things:

You will turn your assignments in on time & to the best of your ability.
You will participate & work with team members, not matter how much you may hate some of them.
You will not take anything personal that happens in this contest.
You will not throw fits/temper tantrums depending on the outcome of challenges.
You will respect me as the judge.
You will notify me of problems/extended absences.
You will see that my decisions are final law.

Those sound pretty stern, but basically, it’s not my job to babysit you. Most of you will be older than me anyways [maybe], so act with some maturity.

As a judge, I will promise to judge the rounds fairly & timely. I will keep honest records of voting & scoring. I will treat each participant of this contest with respect & take care of problems as they arise. Just remember, there is a social aspect of this contest also. If you piss a whole bunch of people off because you’re ignorant, arrogant & rude, don’t be surprised when you’re voted off by your team.

Wrapping this up, I’ll give you the Sparknotes to this contest so far:

This contest will be held by Chase, aka me. I can be wordy with explanations. The contest will be of multiple rounds lasting a week to two weeks in length. During this time, you will be asked to complete different challenges as a poet & writer.

The contest will start as soon as I find roughly 14-28 poets I see talent in. To find talent, you will enter in one fresh poem to this contest showcasing your skills & your view-point as a poet. You will also complete the survey/application. You’ll agree to the “terms & conditions” like section I have laid out on the contest page.

The contest will close April 1st. I will take a few days to finish my final judging & end the contest, hand out shineys/points to the top poets & the fun will start there. Soon after, I will send out personal messages with more information & post another column.

Sorry this was so long. I hope you can get my point out of this. If you have questions, IM me. I’m a friendly guy.

Note #1: If you are interested, please place a reserve. & complete your poem by April 1st. :]

Note #2: I am moving poems that are not just reserves into the finalist's list. I'm all about the alphabetical order also. No rankings yet. That's all. :]

Note #3: I've decided that I'll just judge at the end like everyone else does. All of the reserves make it tough to compare.

Note #4: Okay. I lied. I'm going to kind of judge as they come in. Poems that are completely outstanding/poets that have proven themselves to me before will get automatic links into the multiround contest. Others that I leave a comment on without a link are still eligable to get into the group, but it's not certain. You may enter in another poem if you wish. Just make sure you copy & paste the survey into the new one.

Note #5: The contest is closing April 1st. Remember that.

-Chase

I'd love to see what you think of my new stuff as well - we briefly met when I didn't write free verse at all [which is your preference]
You, get back to writing - not fair to lose such a good writer - especially not in a site full of shite.

I don't mean to "eavesdrop", but if you're having difficulties finding good poetry to read, please see my post from earlier this evening, "Do You Really Want to Know What Poetry Is? Read These Poets (Part I)". Chase came by earlier. It's a partial list of people I've encountered since I joined AP in June 2004, a few of the most incredibly talented & compassionate people on this site. Yes, there is a lot of drivel to sift through; let me assist. I've done a lot of legwork. I have over 50,000 comments now. Obsessed with poetry??? You betcha. It's kept holes out of my walls & my china intact for years. Be well, Poet. Wanda

Wow, that was looong, but I'm proud to say I read the entire thing and didn't even skip the boring parts, (aka Chasey's rants regarding personal experience?) Lol. I'll think seriously about entering this Chase...

I feel like a poetic baby, because I'm just starting over (like you, I guess)... I'll bookmark it, but if you don't hear back from me in a few days about it, send me a message and yell at me to enter.

    Love ya hun,

Thank you for the invitation, but I must decline, for the reasons I told you, via IM. One other thought about not being noticed...A lot of younger writers seem to change their names quite often...which means that, unless someone has you on their favorites list, your readers lose track of you. Especially if you have a quick trigger finger on the delete button. Just a thought. Give people a chance to find you, Poet. Don't make 'em Chase after ya. Thank you for hosting such a daunting competition & good luck to the intrepid souls who enter. I'm older, so my endurance is lagging. Be well, Poets & Scribes...& KEEP WRITING. This world needs all the artists it can hold. Wanda

A sure cure for writer's block, as promised:

Exactly! I don't want to write poetry like that, that's why I'm unsure about starting another rounds contest.

I think it's generally been the times when I have had other things come up and no time to write and I just have to rush...

HAHA. we should count the number of sexual innuendos you do in this competition. (actually... maybe not, it'd be too hard to keep track )

                    um, ok, here's a thought:
if you win (so if you find me out), then I write you a dedication poem.
if I win (so if I do do it and you don't find me out), then you write me a dedication poem.

that keeps it poetic and, since our muses aren't the most alive and dedications are harder anyhow, a challenge.

    dootedoot...

Hmm, thanks for the info IM. I'm already hoping to join Tyler's multi-round and not ditch him in the middle. I suppose I caaaan try this out. Don't kill me if I ditch the contest in between due to my lazy-trying-to-be-active behaviour.. I haven't had the patience to enter multi-rounds before. But maybe I wanna try out this time because my high school finals end on the 28th and I also feel like challenging myself to be more expressive.

You said this ends on April 1st right? So, well, I won't reserve yet, cuz it really depends on my mood of writing a new poem at the moment. I haven't been writing much of late. If I get workin', I'll join you at the end. I have this bookmarked though.
