A chanson is a song, usually about love or wine – or a combination of both.
That’s your prompt BUT:
your entry must be in the traditional cinquain form.
If you have never written a cinquain or want to learn more about this short poetry form or want to do well in this competition, please read my column (especially paragraphs 1 & 3) about the how and the types & variations.
http://allpoetry.com/column/show/1933270
and my list of cinquains:

My own “chanson”:
http://allpoetry.com/poem/show/1529936
Rules:
~ Only cinquains in the traditional style
~ Only single cinquians
~ Pay attention to the syllable count
~ Left align and plain backgrounds only
~ Pay attention to presentation, spacing and line breaks
~ No sudden scribbles – pass it through your senses before you post
Please welcome Moqui Takoda as my co-judge.
We would love to see some “new” cinquain poets here – especially free verse poets who have never tried their hand at cinquains – how’s that for a challenge! And of course, all of those whose cinquain talents I’ve admired many times.
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on January 20, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 250, Bronze: 150
- Final notes:
My co-judge and I SO enjoyed this contest, and even though there were only 18 entries, the judging was difficult! Our final choices were based on the following:
- metaphorical language and devices
- sparse use of adjectives and gerunds
- “completeness” of individual lines
- interpretation of the theme
- line unity combined with individuality
- line breaks/pauses
- climax in line 4
- “punch” in line 5
- syllable count
- poetic impact
- presentation
- fluidity
There were many lovely entries and I especially appreciate those that have tried their hands at writing cinquains for the first time! We’ve decided not to award honourable mentions as there were too many poems of equal quality, both poetically and technically. We do however want to mention the following poets’ entries: ardentMarch, Swan song & PageTurner.
Thank you, poets – you did yourself proud, and I do hope that you’ll enjoy writing many more cinquains. A big thank you to my co-judge: You’ve been great, Moqui and it was a pleasure to host this contest with you.
Congratulations to you all.
PS – Zappa’s cat inspired Moqui to buy his own cat now, lolol!!

I want to do more too
Nicolette and Moqui Takoda well done with tasks
I want to get around yet and comment on some, and each says commented by judge... sincerely, such as I thank you for not disqualifying me but helping me see cinquains where they have to be strict --
I treasure your letting us review the judging with such thoroughness added to final notes as well. a lot to five lines to make it beautiful. Congratulations to those that got trophies and your attention.
was an experience to keep on record,
