Hello, \*prospective contestant *\and (hopefully) *\storywriter\*. I've arranged this contest in this order: 1st, Intro. 2nd, Options and Requirements for each Option. 3rd, Rules. 4th Final Words.
*INTRODUCTION:
*Remember to fully read each of the sections pertaining to your work...I'm serious because if all I get is stuff that doesn't follow the rules, I'll just delete it and start over because will not give point away to those that don't work for them. Sorry, everyone.
In this contest there are rules and rules are there to keep the lackadaisy ones out. They are there to allow me the ability to judge your work easily and to challenge both you and I. So therefore, I am requesting here and now that you respect the rules and follow them accordingly. And I do mean \all \the rules.
The next thing that I wish to cover is the options. \This is a contest souly for stories\. Not columns, not essays, not poems, and definitely not death notes of any sort. However, \screen plays and monologues are highly welcomed\. Now here are the options as I count them off in my head:
--> *Romance*.
I'm a sucker for a Romeo and Juliet. WRITE me something of love...Any love. I don't want anything of extreme detail, mind. I have two younger brothers and that's something I prefer letting my parents deal with, not anyone else.
----------Got that, Romance People? Here's your requirements:
1. This story is required to date back to (a) medieval Europe (including England and Russia), (b ) Asia early 17-18th century, or (d) today's time, but not in a gang related way please.
2. Names must sound like that day and age. Personalities may be altered for your own purposes.
3. You are allowed to use *Erotica *as long as you \forewarn \in your Author Comments of such. That way I will be prepared and not let my brothers read along with me.
4. Love should be a driving force in Romantic works. Regardless of whether it is returned. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> * Science Fiction*.
I enjoy a good star-gazing action sometimes. But I love the type that takes place without leaving the planet just as well. I want detail. Don't forget to *explain *to me what's so \scientifically different \about this story vs. today's time.
----------Got that, Sci Fi Fanatics? Here's your requirements:
1. This story is to have a date of some sort, however you would like to place it. Give me some idea of how long from now or how long ago from now it was. That doesn't mean it has to be on this planet either.
2. One of your semi-leading or leading characters *must be *of advanced technology of some sort (alien, robot, genetically enhanced clone, whatever). That means I want the character to be more or less not a simple by-stander in the story.
3. This must have some basis with earth. Whether from humans being in the story, or mentioning the sun as a star, whatever, as long as I can tell that it mentions earth somewhere in the tale.
4. Anything goes here as long as you can draw some scientific resemblance. Breaking all the physical rules and such is fine as long as you can explain why. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Fantasy*.
I love dragons (obviously) and fairies, unicorns, witches, warlocks, daemons, hell hounds, all of them. I want you to chalk this story full of anything you can imagine. *Detail* is very important here because I can't see the world I'm in without you \describing it\. And I don't want JUST plain Rapunzel or Hansel and Gretel stories...anything will be great!
----------Got that, Fantasy Scribes? Here's your requirements:
1. This story is *NOT *to have anything pertaining to the technological real world. No cars, no phones...nothing dealing with technology besides, perhaps, glasses or such menial things. IM me if you aren't certain.
2. One of your semi-leading or leading characters must be fantasy based. Gnome, elf, werewolf, vampire, whatever you like, but you have to use this character for more than just one sentence...I want them to be more than a flat-descript character.
3. I want you to mention a character from the more familiar fairy tales somehow. Something like Doc (from _Snow White_, the Disney version) popping in to ask for directions or something works good. A fairy tale that has been published and accessible by the common resident. I want a tale that I know, mind you..._Dracula_, or _Goldie-locks_...you understand, I hope? Stories I have never heard of will not work.
4. Using dragons or some somewhat more frequently thought of fantasy characters is good. You can get *brownie points *for either coming up with your own characters or putting a twist on those that all ready exist. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Horror*.
This is where you get to scare me so badly that I can't sleep for a week. (Which could be a good thing if I get a lot of stories) However you write this, I want to be so frightened that I'm afraid of doing whatever it is that happens!
----------Got that, Horror Contestant? Here's your requirements:
1. This story should be (a) in Europe in the 1800's, (b ) in North or South America in the 2000's, or (c) anywhere else must be between the two dates given (between 1800-2000)
2. There must be some sort of \embodiment \of the horror's star. Ghost, creaky house, whatever you'd like, just as long as you can describe it enough that I know there's something there.
3. Use one of these items in your story. (a) a candlestick (b ) blunt tipped axe (c) a dog (d) a cat (e) a boat. I want you not just to mention it in your story, but make the \characters actively use it\. (for instance, to attack or to jam a doorway)
4. However the story ends, make sure you don't focus just on the ending. A good story has both a gripping start and interesting middle as it should have a killer ending. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Humor*.
I want anything. If you can make me laugh, it's all the more the better. Good storyline is a plus in this because hiding tidbits through the story and coming up with multiple laughs is far better than just one.
----------Got that, Humor Writers? Here's your requirements:
1. This story must have a solid story line and coherent direction within the story line. Meaning I want it to \make good sense\, regardless of the jokes.
2. You must make your characters talk in at least two different conversations in your story. If the entire thing is a conversation, you are excused, but only if it's that way.
3. The humor in your write is allowed to be bias or such stuff as long as no one is offended by it. *I will not accept sex-slander*. Meaning I will not listen to you speak about the deed nor the thing leading up to it, etc. Speaking of female or male is acceptable...provided, as before, no one is too offended.
4. Cartoon pictures without a story below are \not acceptable\. I want to read something...not just view a picture. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Children's*.
For all those kiddy writers out there. I want a story that I could tell a child. A youngster that watches Disney, like _The Little Mermaid _or _Sleeping Beauty _variety. Also, this must be short enough to keep the child interested. Nothing that will take two hours to read, for example.
----------Got that, Children Ink Slingers? Here's your requirements:
1. This must have direction and childishly captivating plot. Remember, the age group this is being written for is no older than 16. (well, unless the reader really likes childish movies.)
2. I don't want \double-dealing \characters. If a character is not completely goody-goody, that's fine, but I don't want them to be the sort to turn their friends in for a buck or what have you.
3. Mention \description \but don't take too long. Younger people lose interest if you stay too long in the backdrop. However, I want a good idea of what the place looks like a well.
4. A moral to the story is not necessary but if not everyone does that, you may earn *brownie points *for being "original." The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Fan Fiction*.
For any of you that like writing from something all ready created. \Cowboy Bee bop\, \Tenchi\, whatever (I don't know how to spell any of these). Don't forget to mention names and basic descripts here, regardless that they may be based on some other writer's work. It is a lot easier that way because I may not know what the characters are from merely by the title or whatever.
----------Got that Fan Fiction Debonairs? Here's your requirements:
1. You must explain how the characters came to be where they are now. Help me understand what's been going on before this took place.
2. *Battle*. I want some sort of action happening somewhere. It can be a play duel, a nightmare, whatever, just as long as it's good and action packed.
3. Type the \Title \of what this is based on in the title of the work.
4. If I am unfamiliar with what this is based off of and can't find anything on it, then I shall request more information from you. That way I can constitute whether someone's pulling my leg or not. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> Mystery.
You remember Sherlock Holmes? Encyclopedia Brown? Well, that's what I want. Make me keep guessing who did what to whom and when and why. Sure, *coherent plot is needed*, but keeping me guessing as to the real culprit is still needed for a good mystery.
---------Got that Mystery Makers? Here's your requirements:
1. This work must be in (a) the Sherlock Holmes time in Europe, (b ) 1700-1800 in America, or (c) today's time anywhere
2. Death is allowed, but the \gore is to be kept low\. I do not want my brothers to read anything too forthwith on these kind of details. Rape is okay, but must be \forewarned \in your Author's Comments.
3. Drop clues through the work that could make a reader-sleuth discover the real culprit without looking. But yes, I do want to know who did what and all that.
4. Don't make anything obvious and don't forget to put in false clues and speculations as well to try and throw the reader off. Killer endings with these twists are harder to write, but so much more convincing. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Screenplay*.
Lights. Camera. Action! I want to be able to get a group of friends together and actually be able to act this out (barring, of course, costumes and stage equipment). I want this work to speak enough on its own that there is no need for the actor to improvise in some form to better clarify itself.
----------Got that, Future Producers? Here's your requirements:
1. Give *detail *of the backdrop, the stage position, the crowd's position, lights, scenery, music, background noise. All of it. Action should be written out so that an amateur actor may understand what they are doing.
2. \Write \the words the actors speak like you would like them to say it. If you want a Southern drawl, write it in there. You want German like accents, write it in. Just do your best and if you have troubles, simply leave such notices in your Author's Comments so that I may know.
3. I want \at least three scenes\. If it is a monologue, then tell me so in your Author's Comments and it will be excused from this. Because it is to be more than once scene, I want you to mention curtains dropping and who is where on stage and whether they will be behind the curtain when the next scene is being brought out, etc.
4. \At the beginning of the write\, enter the names of the characters in the play and basic physical and emotional attributes. This will allow me a good idea of what each character may act like and better gauge my results from such. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
--> *Other and Everyone Else*
For any of you that couldn't find your section above, this is for you. Whatever it is that you write, I want it longer than a single page on word, but not extensive (like 20 pages). Keep in mind that I still want good description and coherent plot.
----------Got that everyone? Here's your requirements:
1. *Explain *to me in your Author's Comments why it is in the genre(s) that you have chosen. I want to know why this work didn't fit in any other option.
2. You must have \at least three lines \of a character speaking, whether in thought or out loud. That means you can't simply write about a bag floating over a fan or whatever.
3. Give the work some kind of pulling action. I want to finish reading your works...Honest! But if it puts me to sleep, you're just plain out of luck. So try to keep me as interested as is possible.
4. Whilst this will also include anything in *Adult Humor *or *Erotica*, I would suggest you do not add such things unless that is your extremely best work. I must also remind you here that my two younger brothers will be assisting me with this contest and they are not old enough to read these things so the less grotesque (or sexual) the better in both Adult and Erotica. The contest holder, dragondancer, will assist and pre-judge works provided that the work is submitted early enough for a critique and she is notified.
*RULES:
*Yeah, yeah. Nobody likes rules, but they are there mainly to keep this contest from overwhelming me and give structure to the types of works I am looking for from all of you wonderful writers.
1. No *sticky caps*. I don't want any sort of extra capitalization what so ever. I believe it should be used for things such as names, beginning of sentences and such like. It makes it harder to read and makes it less likely to win here anyway.
2. No erotica. Unless the requirements above say otherwise, I don't want anything outside of *PG-18*. Kissing is good, touch, and all that the moment you take it off of first base, it's out.
3. Length. I want it to be long enough to at least look like a story. (about the length of the screen here)
4. Nothing too extensive. Nothing that will take me an hour just to read that one. I happen to like having my own time to do with as I please.
5. In order to prove that you have read your option, your requirements and these rules, I want you to write down the exact words in requirement four. The entire thing. Cut and paste it if you want.
6. Also, in your Author's Comments, I want you to \tell me what you chose from the requirements of your option\. (For example, for Romance it could be: Romance: Medieval Europe, No Erotica, Magdalene and Roric.)
7. Prewrites are now allowed. I will accept Prewrites because enough people left comments here for me.
8. English is important to me so I would like to have \pre-spell-checked works with at least a small sense of grammatics\. That doesn't mean you'll be DQ'd or anything because of it, just not as likely to win because I have a hard time reading things that have bad spelling and grammar. That also doesn't mean that I am perfect either. I understand that there will be mistakes. Complaining that I am a hypocritic judge is not fair because I know that I am not perfect in my works and I know others can't be as well. *Such comments can *(not necessarily will) *take points away from your work*. Mainly because I prefer helpful critiques.
9. You must comment on *two of MY works*. Commenting on other contestants is good too, but will not be accepted for this rule. I want comments that have some value to them. If you can critique a work of mine enough to \get a minimum of three points\, then it's most likely acceptable. I do not want comments that simply seem like passing by words...Consider what you speak and mean it.
10. Please \tell me the option you chose\. I know that there are some works out there that fall under more than one, but tell me which on it is posted for so that there is no confusion.
Okay. That's everything. I know it seems a lot. I am hoping for a good turn out and *if you know any writers out there that would like a chance at the points or even just to enter and be recognized*, then PLEASE IM or leave a comment to me about them. \You will be rewarded 20 points if the person submits an acceptable piece\. (That means only if they follow all the rules and such)
Good luck everyone and may the best writer win!
Okay...Lots of people have asked and so I'm going to allow prewrites here. As for the limit. There isn't one as of yet. If all I see is your work then that's the limit. Otherwise there isn't one.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on December 27, 2004
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Okay, okay, it took me longer to read them all than I thought. However. You each are still getting an in depth critique from me just as soon as I can manage. I have read all the entries, but I'm afraid that those that did not follow most of the rules (for almost nobody followed all) were not considered for trophies. I shall be going through later and removing all contest entries that did not do a minimal of at least one comment on my work or bio-page as of the beginning of this contest.
As for my critiquing: I shall be re-reading and commenting on your work within the next week or so depending on the how long each work is. As for notreallypoetic and your "Anvil" Screenplay, please IM me so that I may bestow your separate prize.
And upon my recent realizations as that most contestants do not follow my rules, I am sorry to say that I shall only be giving points to the following:
JGreen for Plunger Punishment--> You shall be given points upon my discretion
Lucidique Angel for Untitled--> You shall be given points also upon my discretion
Krisness for all your works--> You shall recieve a gift amount by sometime tomorrow(if the system works correctly)
Bad Fairy--> You shall be given a gift amount as well in way of sponsoring this work in the featured box. I believe that shall be no more than 200 points...I have yet to decide. It shall be done within the next week.
And lastly honorable mentions and such:
Mr Vertigo--> For your strange and oddly enjoyable works, as usual.
jaded angel--> For your disturbing death-ending, but ever so loving all the same.
AND
D P Robertson--> For making me wonder just what exactly was going through your head!
That's it. Sorry for all those I did not list.

hey nice way to do a contest. Now do u know where to get brainstorm ideas for writing poems now that they changed the site around?
-
I HAVE AN IDEA FOR A STORY! Actually I have several Sci-Fi ideas, and I've had them for several years, but I can't seem to get them down on paper without them sounding completely stupid. Now are you going to close this contest for sure on the 21st or will you be pushing it back if there aren't many entries? Oh also if there's a good Sci-Fi story here on AP or SW that you could suggest I'd appreciate it very much. I wish you the best of luck with your contest and I hope that I can enter something worthy of this amazing contest.

Hi! I am thinking of entering this contest but your requiremnets confuse me. What does 'meant ion a character' mean?
-
Great contest
This is a really good contest. Lots of choices! I'll get a story in before the deadline if I don't get shanghaied by my brothers for the holidays. -
It's about damn time that someone out there knows how to run a contest besides myself and a few others I know! I have some perfect pre-writes I could submit here; one thing though--how many entries are we allowed to submit?
Also, for someone who expects perfect grammar and spelling, you kept spelling "mention" wrong; it's not spelled "meant ion," it's "mention." -
I would have some pre-writes to enter...no time for any new stories right now though, next week is finals week!
-
Thanx
I'm not certain of how to run a contest persay, but I try. As for the grammatical thing...I prefer to have it so-so in form. I don't care if it isn't perfect...just not to terrible. I didn't put a limit because I kind of depends on how many enter. I'll place a limit after I can gauge how many people are submitting here. -
I have a prewrite that I think would be really good for the romance portion of this contest... kinda has some fantasy in it too... I hope that you do decide to allow prewritten stories in!
All the best! Mandy -
Ok first of the rules have a prob with them Number 5 says oexact word in requirement 4 but the option I would choose has only 3 requirements The Sci-fi option! Just thought I would let you know that I like the Idea of this I am going to go put something together and come back to this I think I can create something for you!

Alright.

Hello there! I believe I've commented on a story of yours in the past (You entered mine and Papillon's Fantasy contest did you not?) Does that count? I believe I recieved 8 pts for it.
~Pix
P.S. confusion over rule #5, do you want rule #4 cut and paste or requirment #4 (under each genre) cut and pasted?
Edited on Dec 08, 10:46 p.m. because 'another question'. -
I am accepting which ever one puts in their comment box...it seems I was a little unclear...As for the commenting on my works prior to this...yes, that works too, but I have to know that you did...some people just claim to and didn't...I really hate that (I know you have though
)

Wonderful Idea for a contest, Very Orginized
I submitted 3 of my stories to your contest.
Change: I'm submitting it under OTHER, because it's more of a Crime story than Horror... it's not that scary.. and it doesn't go by the rules for the Horror stories.
Dark Lovers: I'm submitting it under FAN FICTION, it's a Fan Fiction based off Angel Sanctuary. I rate it PG-13, not because it has erotica or anything.. just because it gets a little romantic and if your younger brothers are very young they might not should read it. ^.^
Love Me In The Darkness- I'm submitting it under FAN FICTION, it's also a Fan Fiction based off Angel Sanctuary. It's also rated PG-13, for the same reasons as the above.
I hope you like the stories, and good luck with the contest.

good job for writing such a complicated contest. I don't have the time/effort to write a long screenplay, so I'm not going to bother entering (I don't think so anyways), but still two claps for you.
-
