Picture It!

Ok, this is in a easy one. My third contest ever, 350 points up for grabs, and not a whole lot of rules.

General, Obvious Rules
1. No TyPiNg LiKe ThIs...nothing I hate more.
2. No sexism, racism, etc.
3. Keep foul language to a minimum
4. No erotica
5. No suicide, cutting, violence, etc.

More to the Point Rules
1. Write a poem about the above photograph
2. The poem has to be AT LEAST 20 lines long
3. Put yourself in the poem, but not in a negative light
4. Late addition I forgot to add this. Yes, you can enter more than once.

Some Facts About the Photo in Case You Need Them
1. It's an original...this is only being said because it IS NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN! It is a copyrighted photo. Belongs to me. If you like it that much, I'll sell you a print for a cheap, but don't steal it.
2. It's in North Carolina
3. Those are not sunflowers: I'm not sure anymore of the exact name of these flowers, they are too small to be sunflowers. Someone told me what they are, I just forgot. The closest thing I could find is Gerber Daisies, although they aren't exactly those, either. So, for the sake of it, either use Gerber Daisies or sunflowers I guess, if you want to use a name for the flower.
4. The road this shot was taken on is Highway 158, in the northern areas of NC, around the mountains
5. If you need anything more, please feel free to IM me.

Let 'er rip! Give me your best! No prewrites!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 13, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 350
  • Final notes:
Wow, guys! This was a tough one to judge! Let me say this in closing, though: thanks! I really enjoyed reading what you all came up with for this photo. It's one of my all time favorite photos in my collection, and it's nice to see this place in so many different lights. From a photographer sitting in the grass, to an old man who once lived there, to a fantasy world, to the house speaking to us...I love the amazing imagination you all dug up for this piece. I'm definetly thinking another "write a poem for my picture" contest is going to be put up soon. And I hope you all come by and give me some more of your imagination! These were all wonderfully written pieces, and I feel honored to have had the chance to read them...as well as find some new people for my favorites list! Best of luck, and keep writing!

I honestly don't remember the name of the flowers. I'm looking it up right now, but they are way too small to be sunflowers. I called them that once and someone corrected me. As soon as I find the name of the flowers, I'll be adding the name in there.

The closest thing I've found is Gerber Daisies. So let's say for the sake of it that's what they are. LOL!

Dang it... I really love that picture.... I want to steal it! But alas, I shaint... Hummm... is there any way... I could... get it for... free??

Maybe the winner could get a free copy of it? That would be cool. (along with the points, of course)

Just a suggestion. I'm entering either way.

Nope, they do not appear to be black eyed susans. I just went to google and the petals are much different. I'm tellin' ya, they look like sunflowers...

They may be, but the photo is rather strange. The flowers are, in reality, painfully small. Not sure what the heck they are, I did think they were sunflowers to begin with. But I'm bad at these things. LOL!

The picture is beautiful... I'd enter, but I'm horrible at nature poetry.

What's the inscription on the top right? Am I right that it's in a Tolkien language? (I've gotten interested in learning the languages of Middle-Earth lately).

    Best wishes with your contest.

Wow! Very good! It is, indeed, a Tolkien language font. Not really the language itself, but I downloaded a font for it and it writes the letters individually. I didn't think anyone would notice my touch of Tolkien there. It pretty much just says what it does on the bottom.

    don't mind me, just being a know-it-all :P

IMO these are indeed sunflowers. Everything about them screams "SUNFLOWER!" Not just the flowerheads themselves that have the characteristic heavy-seeded disk structure of sunflowers, but also the leaf shapes and stem structure are all consistent. Perhaps the confusion lies in the fact that there are many varieties of sunflower, and what many people think of as THE sunflower is the common sunflower (Helianthus annuus)native to North America. In fact, hybridizing of the sunflower in the past several decades has been so extensive, that in any given rural area in-season, you can find sunflowers of nearly any height and size, including red, orange, and multi-hued color forms in addition to the original yellow.

I don't know if inspiration will strike hard enough for me to enter this contest but that is an amazing photo. Are those trees growing inside the house? Nice work. Do you have any other photos posted on the web?

The tree is growing partly out of the house and partly up the side. The roof was torn apart and part of the side wall was down. With all the stuff around it, I couldn't tell exactly how much of it was in the house. And yes, I do have more online. I have a portfolio at Fotki, here's the link right to the actual photography: public.fotki.com/Scars19/attempts_at_photography/ Enjoy!

lol Take it from an avid gardener they are sunflowers. They can grow all different sizes and there are lots of varieties. I had a few in my garden that came up from seed this year that were only about 10 " tall and others that were four feet. Great pic by the way.

It's been over seven months or eight months since I saw this picture or read any of these poems. And I must say, I do not understand what anyone (not even myself) was writing about. This shack could not have been someone's house.

It may not have been. It may have been a tabacco shack, we have a lot of those around in this kind of shape. But, it could have been a house, too. I never got close enough to investigate, but it doesn't appear the place had windows. So you may be right.
