I decided to start my own contest. I have several reasons for this, but the big one is because I just want to read good poetry.
I am tired of being on this site, and unless you know everyone, or have a million of your friends on this site, no one really gives you the time of day. Don't get me wrong I really like this site, its just I'm tired of feeling like I'm in high school. Like I'm an outcast once more.
Anyways, in this contest I want you to write about anything. I don't really care what it is. I just want the chance to be able to read great poems and critique them.
So maybe if you feel like I do, and just want to write and read great things then this is the contest for you. Since I know no one, and have no friends, my opinion will be completely un-biased. I just came here for the chance to improve my writing, and to read and experience great poetry that others write. I'm hoping that this contest gives me the chance to do this. I want the hope that I had for joining this site to be a reality.
RULES
There really aren't many rules
Please only one entry per person.
OK, apparently there was just one.
I know this may not be the most original idea for a contest. If this goes well and I have another, I will make more creative contests. I can be quite original and interesting if you get to know me. I'm just afraid no one here will give me the chance. I just want the chance to improve the thing that Ive loved to do since I was 8 years old..write.
Please entertain me.
Have fun and write whatever inspires you!!!
I forgot to add that second and third place will also have points bestowed to them
2nd will be worth 200
3rd will be worth 100
All the honorable mentions will get 25 points!!
ADDITIONAL: I just want everyone to know that entered my contest I will try to judge Monday the 22nd. If I don't get a chance, I promise that I will Judge on Thanksgiving as I have 5 days off
. Thank you to everyone that entered, and I promise that I will judge as soon as I can. There are just so many poems, it may take a little longer then I had thought!!!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 22, 2004

I think that every poem that was entered into my contest deserves a trophy. I will be having another contest soon, and I invite you all to enter. Thank you all for giving me such wonderful poems to read, and helping me see that there are some people on this site that care about poetry and not just themselves!!!!! I really did agonize over this contest. That’s why I had to judge it tonight so I could get some sleep!! (My boyfriend thinks I’m crazy) I don’t know. i know this may sound stupid, but i'd be more than willing to be your "friend" here on allpoetry..
it takes time to get to know people, you just have to leave comments and hope people return them, and just go back and fourth on that...anyway i will enter this contest...have fun with it, and good luck to everyone
take care
-Darkness- -
i know what you mean.. i haven't been on here long enough to be sick of it yet, but i don't have any friends, really.. partially because i don't mingle well online, partially because no one stops to ever say anything. oh well.
..will probably enter this contest just as soon as i figure out what to enter.. -
so lets be friends, im new too , and im just getting acquainted with anybody, i'll be glad to be your friend here at AP
-
I've had the privilege of being here for a couple years now...and the only "friend" i can think of would be Beautifullyweird. Well..my girlfriend is on here too, but that's besides the point
The best way to get comments and get to know people is to randomly click on a name in the Online List..and read two or three poems, leaving good comments. Most people are kind enough to return the favor. Don't get discouraged when they don't reply though..sometimes people are tired when they get the comment and can't think of anything to write...that's happened to me plenty of times. So you shouldn't get discouraged...there are a lot of people and it takes awhile to get to know one of us. I'll read some of your poems when I'm done with this, as a friendly gesture. Remember to keep your pen flowing!

Thank you everyone so far for all the encouraging comments. I will comment on everyone that enters, I just must go to bed now, and then I will begin again tomorrow. So far my faith is being restored in this site and appreciate it. Ive had wonderful entries so far.

I have been on this site for close to 3 years and it has become a second home to me. I know that it is really difficult to find people you can relate to and good poetry. When I joined, this site was a lot different and, sadly, I think it has taken a bad twist as of late. Please don't feel like an outcast...just find some people who have been here awhile and read some of their work. The "veterans" of this site are always good about returning the favor
rain -
I entered " anything less " into your contest.
I hope it restores your faith in this site and its poets.
love to you ,

I appreciate it. I think my contest is going great, and appreciate all the encouraging words. Thank you all. I will be back this afternoon to start reading more contest poem. I am so excited so many people have entered!!!
-
I like this contest thats all it is a simple idea and thoughs are the best kind so ladys gents good night
-
I can only sympathise with your feelings, when I joined AP at the beginning of the year, I loved the idea of the site, but saw little hope of actually breaking into what seemed like 'the comment cycle' of only friends talking to eachother and getting any decent feed back on my work. But I was wrong, it isn't long before you get to know people here, who are on the whole, very friendly folks. By all means leave comments, but never be afraid to IM a poet about their work if it touches you in some way, it's very flattering when another writer takes an interest, and it's a great way to break the ice and make friends. Holding a contest is a great first step too, best of luck with it
Kat xxx -
Thank you Kat. Holding this contest has helped me see that it isnt too bad here. I think this contest was just the thing that I needed!!
-
I'm very new as well, but so far it seems to be as good a place as any to share and grow as a poet. I can't wait to read all the entries to your contest. Thank you for this.
-
Thank you for stopping bye my contest and taking the time to read them. I and Im sure the poets as well appreciate that!!

I know how you feel, I've been on this site a while and always feel excluded and left out because I don't know anyone. Most people have like, everyone and their dog registered but I'm the only person I know into poetry so I'm the only one here. Just wander around the site, critiqing(sp) what you like and hopefully people will return the favour and hopefully help improve your skill, just as you'd like. good luck with the contest!
-
This can be a very cold place...But I know that in time you will grow to love it. I as well as many others , Will open up their arms to you...But On the other hand , Don't be suprised that many think they are above you and let this poem stuff and there so-called valuable " site " name go to their head. It's sad. But oh so true. Some people have forgotten this is a poetry site and are just in it for the awards or esteem they believe they are getting , Which in the real world , Would not be taken that seriously. Points and awards and views are all great things , But they don't mean anything. They are trival. Life is the beautiful part , Everything else should just come next.
It's sad that more people don't see it this way....
I give you my best and my friendship. It's the least I can do in this broken world...
love to you ,
james

argh! cant handle this site! Anyway, I sent "Reality's Trails" its kinda free verse, which I really enjoy once I got the hang of it and definitely revitalised my love of poetry. Anyway, hope it helps, or you find some hope in this contest
-
I sent in a poem I wrote when I had a moment of doubt. hence the name "Self Doubt." I hope you enjoy it.
-
I completely understand. When I have not come back in quiet sometime, I feel like a stranger here. I'm not sure if its my lack of presence or the fact that I rarely associate with some of the more popular writers. But I do feel that many of the contests are bias. Despite the many entries you have, I think I may enter, just because you're more likely to be unbias.
Congratulations on all the entries. I hope that you reach your destiny. -
Thanks for your comment on my contest. I would love if you entered. I am going to have such a hard time judging because I love all the poems that have been entered. Its hard to pick the "best" because I think that anything that anyone writes is great (That may sound lame, but its true) I appreciate all types of poems, and kinds of writers. I truly just love to read and to write, so that is why I thought this site would be so fun. I was a bit dissapointed, but I should have known better. Life is never how we want. However having this contest is a great way to read fantastic poetry, and I just feel better. Thank you for the comment and I do hope you enter. I look forward to reading!!
