Best way to determine the BEST

Be both the contestant AND the JUDGE entering this contest. I think the best way to determine the best is for the contestants to VOTE.

Here’s how it will be done.

1) Enter your best poem (pre write or new one) ONE entry ONLY
2) AFTER the contest is closed VOTE for the top 3 poems (don’t vote for your own) by writing your choice in the comments for the poem.
3) 5 days after the contest closes for judging, I’ll add all the votes
1st place votes scores 3
2nd place votes scores 2
3rd place votes scores 1
4) 400 points for highest score
200 points for second highest score
100 points for third highest score

Rules

1) NO EROTICA or ADULT themes. (Won’t read them. Sorry)
2) NO PROFANITY
3) MUST VOTE for your top 3 poems. (If you don’t, your poem will not be considered in the tally for the winning poems)
4) DO NOT vote for your own poem.
5) Please make vote easy to find (MY CHOICE FOR 1ST PLACE) by using all caps and making it separate from the rest of your comment.

I hope to see other contests using this strategy for judging

I hope to read some OUTSTANDING poems

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 29, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 400
  • Final notes:
Thank you for all who entered. The contest accomplished the two things I wanted from it. 1) I read some outstanding poems 2) These outstanding poems received reads and acclamations from other poets.
I added the votes I had to discount 1 voter who 'stuffed the ballot' but in the end the vote would not have made a difference in the result. I also resolved one tie breaker.
Some people did not vote for all 3 places.

Very interesting. Nice set up for people to be totally involved in the contest. This technique is also done at the World Haiku Club once a month for their kigo contest etc. Very cool.

    I will enter, but

I like this idea, but I do see a (small?) problem: you can't wait ten days to judge; it only gives you like 5, and then moderators judge it.

Thanks. This is my first contest. Didn't know that. I'll have to make it 5 days then.

this is a very cool idea...I will enter, but I have no idea what my best poem is, so I'll just have to pick one.

Good idea, but I know someone who did this for an art contest and most people voted for some of the worst art, because they thought everyone else would vote for the good work, and they didn't want to encourage the good work to win against their own...Oh well...As long as people are honest...

WOW. I was hoping to read some OUTSTANDING poems by creating this contest. So far I am not disappointed. I'm anxious myself to see who the winner will be. I already have some favorites. Can't wait to read more entries. Contestants and Judges, I am sure you will not be disappointed in reading these. Some are very deep and require some thoughtful reading and rereading. Don't dismiss ones you don't 'get' at first. They may very well turn out to be the best.
Thanks to all who have entered so far.

I've started to add the votes. I'm enjoying reading the entries and seeing the variety of tastes. I'm glad people are not only voting but also leaving comments even if its not their choice for a trophy.
I am disappointed to learn the some votes were cast without reading all poems (based on what a UMBR member has told me). I suppose I should have required a comment on all entries, but it's too late for that. I leave the process of judging to the integrity of the voter. Also, please only make 1 choice for each place. I've already seen one voter voting for 3rd place entry 3 times. I cannot count that vote.
