Read carefully!
This is a two stage contest.
First: everyone may enter up to three haiku (no prewrites). These haiku may be contemporary or traditional. They may be up to 5,7,5 in syllable but not more - in total or regarding each line. IE: 4,6,3 is fine.... 5,9,4 is not... any questions regarding syllables...IM me.
I'll be looking for the correct "set-up" of the haiku. Check my column out if you are unsure of what I mean.
This is a two stage contest. I will pick three places which will include the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. 300 to the first and 100 each to second and third. Following that I will hold a CLOSED contest of the three winners only. They will each produce a new haiku (not pre-written) for final consideration. The winner of that three will again win 300 points!!!
The overall winner could achieve anywhere from 400 to 600 points total between the entire contest (two contests in a way)!!!
no porn
no cussing
no BS
no rant
I want quality haiku that has a real moment for us to ah-haaa over... traditional or contemporary.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on August 9, 2004
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: I can't believe how many truly amazing entries there are. You made this incredibly hard on my to judge. I wish I had the points to give to almost everyone. The ones I picked to win each had something that really attracted me. Now they will compete in a closed contest for another three hundred points for the winner. The contest will be done via email at this point so I won't get other people entering by accident. So you three.... write a brand new haiku and send it to me by Tuesday, August 10th. I will judge them on August 11th and let everyone know who wins by posting it.
Don
ps... I will try to comment on all haiku in this contest. I'll be around over the next few days. Thanks.

well now sometimes you just got to say hmmmm.... I think I will put on my cap and mull this over.
There are some excellent writers of haiku here. I will see if I can come up with something to throw my hat in the ring.

I love Haiku contests. I'll get to work as soon as I have some inspiration. Next though you should have a traditional haiku contest and a set 5,7,5 pattern. Thanks for putting up the points to have a contest! -Brett

So far I've learnt about Haiku's they are not simply 5-7-5 syllables... they are more than that... at the moment I'm stuck at the final line "real moment for us to ah-haaa"... good luck with the contest...

I love haikus! If only I were good at them. I think I'll go ahead and try and come up with something anyway. It never hurt to try.

The extreamely high quality of entries into this contest has been astounding, far many more than have been chosen are indeed great haiku and well worthy of awards. Don has brought a great service to the community of allpoetry with his guidance and advice in the haiku styles, many of the wonderful pieces in this are direct results of his knowledge being passed on.
Than you Don for a wonderful contest, and gratulations to those who have produced brillent haiku, whether than gained a place or not, there are many trophies in their work.
Andrew
