6046 POINTS (CONTEST)!!! A Tribute (LadyWiccae/Onyx Dragon)

A Sonnet For Lady Wiccae/Onyx Dragon

by Gregg Rowe

~~~~~
Oh My Lady Wiccae, how I love thee
When I was sick, you came to my rescue
Held a contest in my honour, which flew
And still I have yet to send a thank-you
I will roam and kiss thy earth and thy sky
To see you write another word again
If you quit, I surely will miss your pen
For I believe your Muse has not yet end
Don't go into oblivion, please stay
With your words, your mortality will flow
Words of wisdom, love, truth mingled with blood
Pave new poetic works, showing the way
Continue to write, continue to pen
Show us your talent and write us some Zen.
This is a contest to choose the best Tribute to one of the best poets I have come to respect on this website.  As I go through my medical soap opera, Lady Wiccae/Onyx Dragon showed her true colours by hosting a contest while I was in  recovery, and so humbly I return this grand gesture.  Please read the whole contest page rules for what I am searching for in this contest.  And follow the links supplied, it will better your chances in winning.
OBLIGATORY RULE 1
Click on this link and leave Onyx Dragon a message!  I will be checking to see if you have done this after you have submitted your tribute poem.
A Prayer Request For Me.. (LadyWiccae/Onyx Dragon)
allpoetry.com/Column/721728
OBLIGATORY RULE 2
Go to Onyx’s home page and read some of her works to feel this poet out.  Your tribute should have some personal information in it that shows you have visited this site.  (Usually I don't request this, but put something in your Author's Comment on what you have read so it will help me with the judging.)
Onyx Dragon
OBLIGATORY RULE 3
If you submit a PREWRITE:  it must be a TRIBUTE to Lady Wiccae/Onyx Dragon, do not submit a prewrite that does not pertain to the theme or subject of this contest!
STOP!!!
PLEASE READ THESE RULES CAREFULLY:
IF YOU DO NOT IT IS AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION
MUST BE SPELL CHECKED:
ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE
If there are any spelling errors (and I don’t mean by using figurative language and slang, I know the difference) or grammatical errors (like improper spacing or no spacing between words where they should be, punctuation – when needed, or improper use of the apostrophe or neglect to use the apostrophe) then I will automatically disqualify you.)
(This is not a rule, but if you must explain yourself about anything mentioned above to avoid a disqualification then place it in your Author’s Comment box, I will not go running after entrants for corrections.)
I AM GOING TO BE GIVING EVERYONE A CHANCE HERE
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!!!
Call upon your resources of friends to come and read your work!
If you enter a poem with the following guidelines below, and if there is  A   spelling or grammatical mistake, you will have until the end of the contest to have corrected it.  If it is not corrected the night I close the contest, then it will be disqualified.  This does not mean that you can be sloppy and just post right away, you must have had to at least attempted to proofread before entering it.  I read the first reading as soon as I receive the post, so I will note the editing efforts of it on the original read.  Thank you for making it easier for me to read them.
That’s it for the rules.  Simple, right.  You would be surprised!
 HINTS:  For my contests read the title of the contest and the categories that I have placed it in, you should be able to create something with that help.
IMAGERY
METAPHORS
SIMILES
ALLITERATION
INTERNAL AND END RHYMES
 These are the five poetic techniques I will judge your poem and the "SHOW ME’ Don’t Tell Me" theory (more description and colour than abstract, concrete...make my senses soar:  hear, touch, smell, see and taste)!
THE FORMAT:  CHOOSE ONE
I have heard rumours that this contest is too difficult!  Narrative Prosaic and Free Verse are very common poetry forms that most of us are writing anyways.  I have just added the restriction on Narrative Verse and Free Verse because I have read Narrative Poetry that could be more classified as Short Story Writing because of their twenty to twenty-two syllable count per line.  Plus, not only is it is long winded to read, it distracts from the writing what you are trying to achieve. (A professor taught me that if you cannot say your line by the time you finish exhaling your breath when reading it aloud, then you have written the line too long.)  Do you know how long-winded it is to read fifty lines with twenty syllables in each line?   Narrative Proasiac is a poem that is consistent with syllable count in every line ranging from 10-14, whereas Free Verse is where one line may be two syllables and the next line may be eight.  What I am saying is that for those who do not write in the two traditional poetry forms mentioned Sonnets and Couplets there are two other categories opened for you to be creative also, just with a few restrictions.  Hope we get more entries.
 Esay Writing with Some Difficulty
NARRATIVE PROSAIC  This type of poem has all the five elements of poetic techniques listed above in what I look for in poetry...also can have end-rhymes and is more interesting if you have a variation of lines, some rhyming and some not.  Minimum number  of lines 14/Maximum number of lines...as many lines above the minimum to say what the narrator has to say!  (Watch your meters in this one, I will accept up to 14 syllables per line.)
FREE VERSE:  There are a lot of samples of free verse on the internet, everyone has been writing this type since the start of the 20th century when it really took off as a poetic form.  Minimum number of lines 28/Maximum number of lines...as many lines above the minimum to say what the narrator has to say!  No more than 14 syllables per line.
 For the Pros
SONNET  (Italian, Shakespearean, Blank Verse)  This is for the sonneteers of AllPoetry.com.  I love this form and will accept any style of a Sonnet your heart desires...yet sticking with the contest's theme!
RHYMING COUPLETS:  Not to exceed thirty-two lines.  These are the two lines written at the end of a Shakespearian Sonnet , so they are 10-syllable/5 feet (iambic pentameter) per line with a rhyme scheme of aa bb cc... This is the only type I will accept for this contest!
 I WANT YOUR BEST TRIBUTE:  TAKE ME ON A NEW LEVEL OF SENSORY PERCEPTION
Thanks to Ashley's adopted poet, MrWinkingFool, and to DragonessTawnya, Angelica, Poetryality, Anonymous, Nelak, Damaged Faith, Catz,  crazycrys, and Apache the points have gone up, as well as there are now two judges collaborating on this contest, as well as eight other members who have graciously donated points towards this contest.   to our second judge MrWinkingFool!   The melding pot has now reached 6046 POINTS TOTAL in which 4246 points are up for grabs and will be given away by these two collaborators MrWinkingFool and lordoftherings! and our four members   DragonessTawnya, Angelica, Poetryality, Nelak, Damaged Faith, Catz,  CutiePie, Hugh Wyles, leftfield, crazycrys* Apache and an anonymous donator!
Good luck and let's show Ashley (Onyx Dragon) how much we have appreciated her poetry and critiques.
 THIS CONTEST HAS BUSTED ME...I HAVE NO MORE POINTS TO INVEST IN THIS CONTEST...WITH ALL MONIES COLLECTED AND MY CONTESTS WINS, I WILL BE READING A FEW SHORT STORIES OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS TO INCREASE THE BANK!
Contest is Over
  • Contest was judged on August 15, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
    This was an exceptional well-versed contest and now I must decide upon the winning entries which is a difficult decision. Based on the requirements for the contest and the rules (which had to be followed or why else would we have rules) these are what I consider to be the winning entries.
    Instead of having all Sonnets win or free verse, or couplets, I took the best poem from each category, thus free/narrative verse fell into one category, sonnets were separate and then the couplets. It was just by luck that the sonnet won, any poem from any category could have made the cut so it is in this order that the poetry was chosen. Multiple entries by one author were grouped and the best one chosen.
    So in no particular order here are the winning entries:
    GOLD : At the End of the Rainbow by Nam
    SILVER : I Bled to Death for Thee by D P Roberts
    BRONZE : inside yellow sun by unfathomable
    Honoraria/Montréal Standing Ovation (100 Points)
    A Tribute to Lady Wiccae/Onyx Dragon by Maureen
    Our Goddess by Isi
    The Beautiful You Ony Dragon by Desire
    The Road Not Yet Taken/A New Beginning by Abby Eyeball
    Warrior Lady by genielassie
    Montréal Standing Ovations (50 points)
    Beautiful by flipping 4a10
    Dream in Colors (You Dance) by penumbrapoet
    lady of the lake by kryspin
    Letter to God by sdaldgwg
    Ode tot he Amazing Onyx Dragon by missmoomoo
    Special Montréal Standing Ovation (25 points)
    Dear Mommy by Beauty Sleeps
    You Can Do Anything by Apache
    Honarary Montréal Standing Ovations (Applause)
    A Prayer for Ashley by Hugh Wyles
    We Love Her in Australia Too! by D P Robertson
    Thank you all for entering, all the collaborators, MrWinkingFool for being a second judge, Joan for lifting the load off me and coming on as secretary to answer all the IMs for this contest, everyone who promoted this contest and most of all for your patience while we ran it. I enjoyed the experience and wish everyone best of luck in future contests and keep on penning!
    Gregg
    I didn't even notice that MrWinkingFool, I hope this takes off because Ashley has really supported me in all my trials and tribulations through my health crisis. I also appreciate the support through the melding of points since I used up all mine again for this contest (but well worth giving away my hard-earned points for a friend when I needed her). Would you like to be a collaborator with me I can add you if you wish? Gregg
    I think it's wonderful that you are holding a contest for a poet you admire and from what I see a good friend. That's beautiful and splendid. Lady wiccae is very lucky to have a friend like you.
    WOW, I'm not sure if I can create something worthy of her tribute... but I can try. She is certainly in my thoughts. I bought a yin yang background off her and it's spectacular (on my poem Ambivalent) she went above and beyond what I expected. So I know she's a great person. I am going to bookmark this and try to do something to honor her.
    one favour always deserves another...and ashley has certainly showed herself to be a good friend to you in your time of need. so nice to see you return the favour. i am considering entering into the spirit of the contest, yet am not up to your high standards (you know i'm not a serious writer...this is just therapy for me) so i will see what i can come up with - understanding being that my entry is just for ashley and not to be in consideration for any trophy and/or points. ok?
    hope today is a better day...that your pain quickly fades away
    hunney for you,
    p.s. speaking of pain...was in a car accident yesterday...am ok except for some minor bruising and muscle strain, but ouch, today is a pain day!
    blinks These last 2 days have already been so overwhelming. And I've only been up for 19minutes...smiles I love you Gregg, and I love you Jay. You two are so awesome and I'm so blessed to have this outpouring of love. My heart feels so much better knowing that I'm not in this alone.
    I love my vision, simply for the reason it gives me power to write, read and create art. This in return, strengthens my soul and allows me to do my damndest to return that strength unto others. I'm in love with the fact that my words can touch others and I'm highly afraid that with the loss of my vision I won't be able to write anymore, that I won't be able to do much of anything any more...anything that's worth remembering anyway.
    I'm almost in tears now at this, and I can't thank you enough. Once more, Gregg and Jay I love you guys..I love all my friends and I'm so thankful to have you in my heart and life.
    I tried to write something, but I'm just too emotionally stretched right now. First, my adoptive Mommy is going blind and deaf and then leaving Allpoetry, and then my boyfriend of nearly 10 months decides he only loves me as a best friend... it's all just too much right now and I can't be conformed to a certain type of poem. I'll try to write her something later, though. I talked to her last night and she was really stressed, so this is a wonderful thing you're doing for Ashley here. Thanks for doing this for her and good luck to all who enter... have fun judging!
She seems like such a wonderful person to have so many people stand by her side and support her so much. She's such an amazing poet. It's heartbreaking to hear about her leaving. She will be grately missed by all of us here at AP. I would love to write her something... but I do not feel that I could expresses in words how much of an impact her poetry is, but I do wish everyone best of luck in the contest!!! I'm sure there will be many beautiful entries.
    Good-morning...I just spent the last hour and a half revising this page because I think a lot of people confuse Narrative prosaic and Free Verse up with Traditional poetry. What is you thought on the new/revised contest now...do you think I have made it more clearer or managed to confuse them more. (I shouldn't be such a stickler when it comes to poetry, but all I can say is look at how many points are up for grabs at this point, so I should be able to ask for poetry that would warrant the point system, no!) or I am just being a stuffy old English Professor smoking my pipe in the corner reading the New York Times! Yes, feeling better except for chest cavity, wondered if they had invited the Chainsaw Massacre actor to come in and play with me for a while well I was on table...looks also like there will not be a noticeable zipper scar running from belly button upwards, some of the tape has started to fall off and no marks that is comforting. Angel and off to write my fourth Angels in Disguise poem, which from the looks of things will be the last in that series for awhile. Gregg
    Yes, I have added the donators as collaborators so they receive all the messages/poems and to have their input on the entries and comments pertaining to this contest. So with two judges and four donators, the contest has reached a new calibre of judging. Thank you so much everyone for your participation in this contest and look forward to seeing what we achieve here in new heights of poetry. What about free verse category where all you need is not less than 28 lines with each line not going over 14 syllables. That one is pretty easy but somewhat challenging. It does bother me to a certain extent when I think that I am leaving people out of contest but yet trying to be all inclusive by offering different categories and levels of difficulty. Gregg
    Beautiful contest.
    Gregg,
    This is a wonderful contest. My heart goes out to both writers. I hope lots of people will enter this. I am sorry, but I will not be one of them. I'm sorry. I have lots of points that I can donate if you would like. The best of luck to everyone. I send each and every one of you my love.
    With love,
    Hi Kalen:
    Thanks so much for your donation of 200 points to this contest for Ashley. I will add you to the ever-growing list of benefactors and will be applauding all of you for your help and donations when I close the contest. Please accept my tardiness in replying, but Angelica is keeping tabs on me and counting up my minutes/hours/seconds and when I spend too much time here, she sends the Australian kangaroos after me to thump me out! Please may I add you to my Angel list?
    I think LadyWiccae (I still like the old name, but I suppose we all evolve), has contributed a great deal to this community, so I'm very happy you've decided to remind us all. Not thrilled with the form limitations (particularly as she promotes so many new forms), but it's your contest.
    As she's grading my homework, I'll refrain from doing gratuitous tributes, but I'll definitely be stopping by to read. Thanks for sponsoring, and my best to everyone,
    This should make for a very good contest. And being for Ashley, even better. I for one among many, am so hoping she doesn't leave us. She's been so very helpful to many of us with her backgrounds and has enriched our lives with her poetry.
    Some very strict rules you have here, but I'll try to enter. Free form is one of my favorite forms, but I'll try to do something more formal
    If you wish to donate points that is alright with us, and in no way would that impair the judgement of the judges who are going to be choosing the winners in this contest! At least I am speaking for myself since the person who is going to be handing me the poetry will be giving me a authorless poem so I will not know who the writer is and be choosing the poem based on the merits listed above in the contest and seeing if Mr. Winking Fool will be agreeing or disagreeing with me.     lol...Greg I have like a 5 minute memory my friend. I do not do well with writing poetry for those whom are having an agonizing time. I love Lady Wiccae (Onyx Dragon...though she'll always be Lady to me...lol...) and I dearly want to write for her ! My fear is always that I will fall short of expressing my feelinging in poetic form. I will try because she has always been here to encourage me and be a true, wonderful friend. I miss her vivacious personality very much while so much worry weighs on her mind.
    I would love the points but I love her more. I have sent my love and energy to my fellow Wiccan sister. I love her and know all will be well with her. So instead of the gift of a poem I am sending her a gift of love and light. Which I feel is more important to her. So if she reads these:
    Hun, I am sending as much white energy as I possibly can. And the energies I send out are for good health and strength.
    Okay hopefully I have updated the page to include Everyone that has donated to this contest...sorry about the tardiness in listing everyone, but I have been quite busy with keeping up my appointments at the hospital and getting rest while running the contest. It is still opened because I do not take double entries by authors separately I would like twenty-five to thirty different poets, so it doesn't matter how many times you enter, it is just I want to see some creativity here. At the same time, if I choose one of your poems as the winning poem, all other entries that you have submitted will receive a comment but will not be included as another winning entry so that we can fairly share this huge jackpot around with all the poets who entered...a total of thirteen prizes will be given out, that will approximate that at least half the entries will be winners for sure.     You say you're going to stop taking entries after 25-30 posts, but there's already like 23 or something. I really want to enter this, and it's so weird because this is really new for me. First of all I've never considered writing a tribute to someone, second of all, no one has made me truly feel what this contest means and what it is all about. I've just got to enter this, but I've got to write my tribute, so if all the entries are filled up, save a spot for me please!!!! I really am going to enter this, so I hope you'll allow a safe spot for me to settle into
    Abby:
    I hgaven't closed it yet, it is opened until August 16th, plus there are some double entries by poets and I have already explained that poets may enter as many times as they wish but only one of their poems may win and the other will just receive a comment because i do not award more than one prize per contest per poet so that everyone has a chance to try and be a winner here.
    no one has made me truly feel what this contest means and what it is all about. I have no idea what you are trying to say in this comment, is it you tried to have questions answered and no one responded or that you wish to write a tribute to Onyx because of her qualities, this is a confusing comment for me.
    Anyways I do hope you are away and penning this tribute poem to try and get it in because we have slowed down in the entries over the past few days and Aug 16th will be the final deadline date to get one in.
    It is because receiving an IM like this, which totally surprises me because I didn’t know there was a complaint lodged, that I am going to close this contest today and judge it...THEN decide if I will ever hold another contest in the future again, especially after the number of points that was spent and donated by members of this community!!!!
    RollingStone: gregg, your tribute contest for Onyx Dragon has now run for 25 days and has 27 entries. you need to close this contest and begin the judging process. You have had more than ample time to allow entries and by your own words you agreed to close it when you have received 25 to 30 entries. we are receiving complaints about the contest being allowed to run for an excessively long period. I hope you understand and I thank you for your cooperation.
    When I have judged the contest and given my final tally, after contacting Mr. Winking Fool about his choices, I will announce the winners. Until then, no IMs please so that I fulfill my responsibilities instead of answering IMs. Thanks.*
    Gregg
    Hey, just wanted to wish you all good luck with the judging, have had a look at some of the entries, and the standard is really high. Having my own contest to judge at the moment and I don't envy you a bit... It is really a lot more hard work than I had anticipated...seems I've got lots and lots to learn
    Blessed be
    I deleted your latest comment on your contest gregg because it contains a lie about me. no one told you your contest has to be judged by sunday night. you are treading on dangerous ground my friend. Personal IM from RollingStone if this isn't censorship and overabuse of power, then I don't know what is, when a moderator can come in and delete remarks because they speak the truth...
    It was no lie because this is the message from Nurse Hayley to me from you "We will compromise: I will allow him until midnight Sunday Aug. 15. But I would like for him to take that long message off the contest page and announce that he is closing the contest Sunday night. that givers him a 30-day run on this contest." And by the way, I take this as a threat now when you write to me I am treading on dangerous ground, and you call yourself a nmoderator for this website. You don't have my vote of confidence. I am lodging a complaint against your powertripping.
    let me set the record straight with you, gregg. I have instructed you to close your contest by this sunday night. that means it will have run for 30 days. that is more than ample time to collect the number of entries you need. you now have 27 entries.
    no one has said anything to you about judging it by sunday. we normally allow two to three weeks for the judging of contests. I don't believe anything unreasonable is being asked for here ~ other than you asking me to ignore the attacks you are making on my character.
    so let me make the instructions very clear, as I do not want any further misunderstandings between us. close this contest by sunday night and begin the judging process.
    Gregg,
    I'm still here for you and the contest for Ashley. I can't believe that somebody would actually complain to a moderator about the contest. How tactless and trashy. Who needs their poem that badly? Whoever did it should be ashamed!
    Whomever reported:
    You joined just for the contest, and not to tribute Ashley and I am throughly disgusted. If you wrote for the points and the trophy, I am pleading for you to remove the poem now. I highly doubt Ashley would want someone that didn't care about her, to write a supposed tribute poem to her. Once again, I am throughly disgusted and you have just released a part of your character and it is one that should be thrown into a garbage heap.
    Jay
    Dear Liz, it is a shame that the contest has been tarnished as everyone has worked so hard on it and donated a lot of their hard earned points, never since I've been here have I seen a contest worth so many points, thank you for your support~angelica~
    I am not trying to cause any trouble or even be a stickler and maybe I read the above incorrectly but when you put this above:
    1500 1ST + APPLAUSE
    1100 2ND + APPLAUSE
    896 3RD + APPLAUSE
    Wouldn't that mean I was supposed to receive 1500 points and 2nd was supposed to receive 1100 and 3rd 896 points plus an applause?
    Or did I read that incorrectly? I'm just askin' and I don't see a 2nd or 3rd place above?
    I am just puzzled.
    I am not finished yet, the system screwed up so I'm doing it by hand and still have to find a way to award the bronze and silver trophies. The system gives you three hundred points right off the bat because that is how much I placed when I opened up the contest and yes, I still owe you 1200 points which are on their way, but right now I am writing my comments in on the individual poems and will be sending the points later on this afternoon. Thank you for your patience. Gregg
    Oh you can have Administration fix all that. The thing with the trophies. They should be able to fix it for you. I think they can reset it for you or something or they can go in there for you and do it. I believe they can help you on that technical issue.
    Aw, thanks for the honorary mention. It's kind of sad to see how out of hand this contest got, but I'm sure it encouraged Ashley.
    Thank you for running this contest for her!!
    Dear Gregg,
    Thankyou for your generous comment on my prayer for Ashley and for the Standing Ovation and applause which, as I entered this as a prayer and not as a contestant, was unexpected but nevertheless gratifyling and appreciated. Could we please have an update on Ashley's situation? I am sure that, like me, others will be concerned to know how she is progressing.
    Regards and thanks to all who supported my prayer and this contest.
    Hugh Wyles.
    I am both honoured and flattered for the MSO for "We love her" and stoked to have snaffled second in among these entries. If the idea of a comp is to inspire creativity then I believe this to be one of the best comps for two reasons. Firstly, if you read the words of Onyx D then you realise what a great talent she is but more how it does inspire creativity. Secondly, the Milton affect on reflection is very strong and creates its own world of what could, should or would have been. I loved penning these poems. I thank Gregg, and all others for their comments. And obviously for Gregg running such a good comp. Without sounding like Fraiser and Niles, there was an element of class to this one, except for that appalling inuendo in one of the poems about a Montreal Standing Ovation.
    Thanks again
    David
