I'm going to try to turn the negatives in my life into at least one positive. Over my life time two of my friends (very close friends) and my best friend died and the cause of death had to do with alcohol. I'm not getting into any stories but, all I will say is that Ive seen just about all of it. A friend died from a drunk driver, a friend died from alcohol poisoning and the other died from getting hit by a drunk.
The media plays a major role in a childs life. Every other commercial is one about sex and alcohol. What I'm looking for is simple if you think about it. I want to put together a little poem book (and Id like your permission of course) with all the poems I get in this contest.
I want a poem which will make someone think twice about drinking.

my first love died in 2001 from a car accident, don't know if alcohol was involved. Same with my cousin in 2002. I wrote a poem shortly after "The Final Act" If you'd like to read it. I can't enter it because it's a pre-write, but I'd like to think It's something that could help.

Awesome idea for a contest.. you're gonna get some awesome pieces here and I think the idea of a poem book is really gonna be helpful to you and other people. Great contest idea. I would enter because I have an inspiring story about my friend's mother, but I'm afraid it would upset my friend too much. I look forward to reading other entries though.

You have a great cause here!! I wish you all the best in your future with letting people know about the dangers of alcohol. I have some alcohlics in the family and I know it can be painful to watch their struggles. This was great, I hope you get a lot of good entries and I wish you the best of luck. Peace. My father died in October. He was an extremely bad alcohol drinker. He died of liver failure...due to booze! I know that my three sisters and I can really come up with some great poems for this contest....do you think you can extend it for a day or two...give us some time to come up with something?

Great idea for a contest, and an even better idea for a book. Unfortunately, like Onyx Dragon, I have apre-write that fits the topic well and was actually written to bring awareness to drunk driving as a danger. It is titled "The White Cross By The Road". I can't enter it in the contest, but you have my permission to print it in your book if you would like.

Excellent idea for a contest, I bet MADD and SADD woulc sponsor printing of the poem book to hand out to increase awareness. My father was killed by a drunk driver, so I will try to write something in his honor.

I have had 6 friends die when I was in high school from drinking related accidents, my father is an alcholic, and my brother was an alcholic until July 4, 2003 when he was killed in an automobile accident. It was a one vehicle accident, and he was alone. He passed out behind the wheel of his truck just before he turned into my driveway, where he hit a tree. I was at home at the time. It all happened within 50 yards of my house. I have had so much guilt because of this. I had gone out with him that night, and had left him only 1 hour before the accident. He had promised me that someone else would drive him home, but he wouldn't let anyone drive him. Sorry for rambling on like this in the comments, but this contest really sparks something in me. I don't know if I will be able to get in an entry, but if you are interested I have several writes about the guilt I have felt, and the emotions that have been tangled inside. I don't know if I could ever get over this. It happened last year. Alcholism is a disease, and it is killing our society. I will try to come up with an entry for this contest. Thank you so much for the trophy. This was a hard poem to write. After seeing this all day on the News, I had to get it off my chest. I am glad I entered this poem into your contest, it brought o sense of relief to me. Ihope it helped someone re-think drinking and driving, driving under the influence at all, it's really not worth it.

I think what inspired me to write the poem was my past experiences with alcohol addiction and the news feature about the drunken lady who killed that child, (the unborn baby) and mamed the others. I had many occassions of driving while intoxicated, but by the grace of God never had an accident or hurt anyone. I was indeed blessed. You can use the authors comment with the poem and this one if you wish. I hope what I have said helps!
