This contest is unique. I think this is the only contest of it's kind held here at AP (though I could be wrong.)
~-TOPIC-~
The mentally challenged. Are you related to anybody who's mentall challenged, do you know anybody like that? What's it like, is it easy to deal with, is it frustrating, have you learned to live with that person? I have a sister with down's syndrom, and it's not always easy. (Though she can be a sweetie!)
~-Rules-~
1. I'm sick and tired of all that "put this in the comments so I know you read the rules" so you don't have to do anything like that.
2. Enter as much as you want!
3. No hatred, violence, suicide, depressing, erotica, gothic sort of stuff.
4. Don't make it too too long. I know there can be a ton to say on this sort of stuff, but no more than, say 150 lines. That's approximately 37 4-line stanzas. That's a lot, I know, but there's a lot to say on this stuff.
5. If I read a word that's even kind-of-maybe-sort-of cussing/swearing, your poem will automatically be disqualified.
6. Prewrites aloud.
If you have any questions, feel free to IM me!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on April 21, 2004
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: Well, here are the winners! *Coloured streamers and confetti burst from the cieling* This contest didn't have very many entries, so that made the judging easy. But I discovered that all these poems were really well written and are all deserving, so that made the judging difficult. (I also discovered that three of the poems entered here have nothing to do with being mentally challenged, so that also helped to ease the judging. I won't mention any names.)
Runner up: My PATTY CAKE by poetryality

wonderful idea for a contest!!!
What a wonderful idea for a contest. I have a daughter with many difficulties. I will write for your contest. I have written many things for "Katie" but none about the hardships of being a parent to a child with special needs. I guess that comes under journaling.
I will try to come up with something, I say. It is a very personal, difficult topic to write about, one that people don't understand unless, like you, they live with it. My daughter is 17 going on 6-7, and she teaches me something new almost everyday.

great :-)
what a great contest idea! i think i will try and write something about one of my best friends. shes got mild autism although it isnt as bad as down syndrome it can b difficult sometimes but i love her to death and i couldnt care less that she isnt as smart/fast as everyone cuz i luv her lol and its almost uncanny the simalarity between my friend and MagicLady's daughter... shes named Kaitie and shes 17 but not going on 7 lol but because of the quotations around katie im going to assume that its not her real name... but enough of my blithering im off to write! wonderful idea once again!

This is a really great idea. I work with medically fragile children. They are teh most profound in their conditions. Most ahve minimal cognitive ability and lack the motor skills to even eat by themselves, but they are all unique individuals... I have several things I could put in as prewrites, but I will see if I can come upo with a new one...Susan

Wonderful Idea, unfortunatly I have not had any recent experience with those of special minds, but I once had a brother who died when I was very young, I was so young that I can hardly have any memories of him. I might enter it depends on how my school work goes lol. Great idea, and I don't think I have seen another contest like this on AP.

I realize that my submitted poem may not be what you are looking for exactly,,,but it is about my addiction problems,,and my desires to help another with theirs,, anyone who knows addiction would say it is indeed as much a mental problem as it is physical or spiritual,,,it is a wonderfull idea for a contest,,, just thought i would share,,ty

Thank you very much for the trophy on this poem. When I wrote it for my son he was having some very difficult challanges with learning, and he still does as well, though medication is helpful to a degree, the fact that his pediatrician demanded her be at least 7 before attempting drug treatment lost him many scholastic years. He has moderate speech impairment as well as very low cognitive abilities. Anyway...again, thank you for the bronze and best of wishes as well...~geniealssie~

TY also for a trophy too! I only had like 25 minutes to write and edit it and I wished I had seen it sooner as I would of loved to put more into it and made it better!! Stay happy

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS! All too often we seem to set to the side those who are challenged. Thanks for challenging us with this contest!
