WOW! I'm ready to hold my very first contest: "Thorn In My Side" won GOLD! I hope all of Allpoetry's Christian members as well as anyone who writes a Biblically based poem will get on board for this one. It will prove to be very unique: because I'm not going to judge it. YOU, THE ENTRANTS, ARE THE JUDGES! This way, no one can say favorites are being played. Everyone has a say in who wins.
The title of this contest just about says it all: write *any style poem* about anything Biblical as long as it falls into the *categories of HOPE, LOVE, and/or SPIRITUAL.* It can be about a certain Biblical person, or God's Laws, or a personal testimony, whatever!
BUT! In order to enter this contest, you must be prepared to read all other entries as they come in and rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best and 1 the least. At the end of the contest, I will tally up the ratings.
If there is a tie for placement, I will be the tie breaker: this is the only part I will play in this contest. As most of you know, I am an associate editor for a Texas based publisher; so, I will be reviewing and commenting on each entry: although, I am removed from rating each or even applauding any of them~~ as the tie breaker.
As mentioned, I am an associate editor. All publishers and their editors feel that a writer truly is a writer when they can accept constructive criticism, taking it as encouragement to improve upon their chosen craft. Any writer who cannot accept and use such criticism never will make it in the publishing world: there are too many who will work with editors because they know they can be even better writers with a bit of guidance.
Therefore, the rating system will stand as it is: posted to each poem review by each reviewer. PLEASE, however, if the rating is less than a 10, be kind enough to tell the poet what was the technical problem with it. It does not matter if you disagree with content. That should not affect your rating for quality of write.
*RULES \not really so bad\
1. Prewrites and new writes are allowed by popular opinion: ONLY ONE ENTRY PER POET of either and it must be in keeping with all other rules as well as the theme of this contest.
2. Absolutely no adult or erotic or any other non-Christian writings. Such poems will be deleted from the contest.
3. If your poem covers specific Bible passages, please include the reference for those in the Author Comments.
4. Rate all other entries on a scale of 1 to 10 FOR QUALITY AND TECHNICAL MERIT ONLY. DO NOT rate a poem based on either disagreeing or agreeing with the text itself. If you rate less than a ten, please tell the writer what was the technical problem, so he or she can improve upon their craft. If you do not rate all entries, and that means checking for new ones once each day through the 27th, your entry will not be considered. Please comment on entries as well as adding your rating thusly: Rating: # ~~ followed by your comments.
5. You cannot rate your own entry, as tempting as that might be. Entrants CANNOT applaud other entries: only rate them. It would be unfair to rate a poem a 10, then add applause worth 10. Only non-contestants may applaud a poem or poems.
6. Non-contestant reader applause for a poem will count as a 10 rating in addition to entrant's ratings. If a reader review lacks applause, we will add 5-points for a positive review and deduct 1-point for a negative review. If the review is somewhere in between, we will add 3-points. So, this means you want a lot of people to read your submission to this contest. (NON-ENTRY READERS: do remember that Allpoetry gives you 3 free applauds per day! So, don't hesitate to applaud your favorite entries). Regarding prewrites, only reviews and applause dated consistent with the timing of this contest will be counted toward total points.
7. To verify that you have read the rules, in *Author Comments* please write *I WILL RATE EVERY CONTEST ENTRY ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 10!* Failure to put this in the Author Comments could disqualify your poem; albeit, I feel certain someone will remind you before it's too late.
WOW! There's God's magic number SEVEN again! Okay, now for prizes:
Gold: 300 points
Silver: 200 points
Bronze: 100 points
1-10 Honorable Mentions: 300 points divided equally
WHOA! We've been able to add awards for up to 10 Honorable Mentions, depending on the number of entries in the contest. 300 points will be divided equally among these.
Thanks to Poetryality, I was able to increase immediately the silver and bronze awards, originally 75 and 25 respectively, to more acceptable amounts. Thank you is such a pitiful word, Renee! But, I know you understand. So, THANK YOU, DEAR RENEE!
AND, poet "queenie" has graciously donated 100 points to be divided equally among 10 Honorable Mentions! This contest is proving to be incredible. THANK YOU, DEAR QUEENIE!
AND, poet "oneslowtyper" has graciously contributed another 200 points to be divided equally among 10 or less Honorable Mentions! THANK YOU, DEAR JOHN!
Okay! Let's get this show on the road. Give me your best new writes and let us *PRAISE THE LORD* while we are at it! Lots of love and hugs to my brothers and sisters in Christ.
FINAL NOTE: HONORABLE MENTIONS, omissions
FifthDove - 302.0;
wayne#072665 - 249.5 (shown below as 9)
Please accept my apologies for this oversight. My only defense was/is being totally exhausted, which doesn't work to well with MS. FifthDove did, however, receive 30 points for placing; as did the Ten listed below. Thank you, FifthDove for understanding (she contacted me without malice; in fact, said it didn't matter). Again, thank you to everyone for participating in this, my first contest.

This truly has been an experience costing me about 5 hours each day to do the rating updates; but, it has been very rewarding in that I've met wonderful poets who love praising our Father and His Christ! When, or if, I do another contest, I will do things differently. The reader review and applause points were not fair to those who do not have huge followings nor did it provide a level playing field for late entries: among which were some very fine works!
Some of the rules were not followed, but I choose to overlook most of it. Sadly, one poem was disqualified and, possibly, I should have disqualified one other. There have been withdrawals, but I heard from all of them and each were due to personal issues at home or work. All in all, this has gone well and I've received many IM's telling me what a fair way to run a contest and that it was a rewarding challenge.
Speaking of which and speaking as an associate editor-- which, by the way, means that I am an editor based in Washington for a publishing house in Texas-- if you stayed in the kitchen when it got hot, then success is up the road for you. Publishers will not work with writers that can't take constructive criticism. So, what you all experienced here was like a drop in the bucket to the paces a publisher would put you through and still they might reject your work! If you aspire to be published, be prepared to pay your dues in rejection slips, then finally a publisher will publish you... after 10 or more rewrites! No joke.
I thank each of the contributors to this contest. You've all presented wonderful poetry, some need a little work; but, most of all, you PRAISE AND GLORIFIED OUR FATHER AND HIS CHRIST! Yoohoo! Let's keep praising and glorifying!
Okay! Points will be sent to the winners shortly! Love and Hugs, BonnieQEntries [17]

how come only christians can enter? thats kinda mean.. and why cant you give hugs to everyone...
-
Well, since this is you very first contest I will definately have to enter. I am a Christian and I will have to do a little study first, there is so much biblical matrial that I love that I am preplexed just now as to what I should write on. I will return very soon with something for everyone!
Renee *hug -
I kind of agree with Abrad O.o There are many non-christians that use references from the bible as well, for it DOES have many good teachings, even if a lot of it we dont agree with..or believe. But
if that's how you want it Bonnie dear..so shalt it be. Goodluck with your contest.
-
Wow. This is a GREAT idea for a contest! oh my gosh, you know what makes me really mad? When people click on a contest knowing that they won't like it, and then they have the nerve to comment and tell you that you are doing something wrong. There are hundreds of other contest out there on Allpoetry, so I don't see why people have to get so huffy about one. Gosh, why do they even bother commenting? When I had my contests, I got a lot of crap from people. It's so immature. Anyway, I applaud you for starting a contest like this. Good luck with everything. When you get comments like those, just ignore them. Good luck! have fun
-
Hey There Bonnie, GREAT IDEA for a contest!!! Also, a unique idea in having it judged! My first contest I was afraid would not look fairly judged because I know some folks better than some others and that bothered me. So for my second, I got help in judging, to be sure it was fair. In the case I still liked one better than the others even if I knew that person better. Which is exactly what happened! LOL But Absinthe agreed totally So It was fair. It just works out that way some times and is part of what makes judging so hard. I worry so much about being fair!! I will definately enter this. I have no idea with what yet. LOL But something will come.
TO aBrAdStrEeT and LADY WICCEA and all other NON-CHRISTIANS.. You guys are more than welcome to enter!!! Whether you believe in Him or not, We love you all, as does God. I pray you may come to know Him. Love and Hugs, Penny

This sounds like an amazing contest and I'll have to bookmark it to see how it turns out; but the judging system sounds too complicated for me and I don't have time to keep checking back. I'm sorry but it turns me off from entering. I promise to watch for the result though. I'm interested in seeing how it'll play out.
God bless you for bringing another Christian contest to the board. I hope you get a lot of entries.

Im assuming you're referring to mine and Abrad's comments. I was simply stating a fact, that not only christians use some of the bible's teachings and to exclude those who do use references to the bible at times, wouldn't be right. I meant no harm towards Bonnie, as she is one of my friends. I was not, as you put it, being "immature". And I Did NOT say, nor did I see Abrads say, anything about not liking the contest.
The only reason I'm assuming you meant both of our comments, was as you use the plural form of comment, and since there were only comments on there...forgive me if I was wrong. But before you get all "huffy" about comments and go around calling others immature, think a little first.
-
And Bonnie, I most definately will consider entering as I already have a teaching that I would like to use, though i'm unsure of the book and reference too it, I'll have to look it up. Perhaps You could tell me if it's appropriate, as personally, I think it wouldn't go under hope or love..
-
Ohhhhhhhh ya'll pray that I can enter this. I don't have hardly ANY time extra. But.....I'm seething at the bit! lol.
Great idea, m'Bonnie!! Love, CookieZeal/D -
I'm not actually christian, so I won't enter, but I'm sure other Allpoetry members who are christian will love it. Nice idea.

Wow this is going to be some kind of contest. I think it is ingenius and I think Jesus will look over it as you are doing his work and keep everyone under control. He did a great job on mine. I love your idea on the ratings though and getting everyone to read everyone elses poetry. It's a great way to get us all to know each other better too. Well I better hush now and get busy on a poem. Thank-you for this opportunity!
-
excellent opportunities in this new contest,
Wow, what an awesome contest and rating ideas here. There are 6 days to closing? I'll have to pray and see if, the Lord can provide the ideal theme and poetic biblical music for me? I know, I can not do this scale of writing on a "I wanna try this one!" Certainly would never soar from the ground into full flight! I am sure going to read these! Even if, I am not able to enter. Just a very creative, unique way of setting all areas of contest up! God Bless and Happy writing to all who take this challenge on!
-
Well..There you go Bonnie..I entered..I did my best.
-
Excellent
I love the idea of us reading and rating every poem and your making the tie breaking decision. What a novel, fun and interesting idea. I hope I have some inspiration.

inspirational
this is a rating system that i think should be considered as an allpoetry's way of rating contests.it sure would seem a lot less biased.this is a little complicated, but it is really workable.i think i read that there should be no non-christians writes, not non-christians writers.there are many spiritual people who are seeking,so whereas they may not be christians, they know God.i will be reading the writes as to give my rating.i will also like to try a write, but i will donate a 100 points that i would like to go toward 10 honorable mentions,if you are amenable to this, please im me and i will send the points. -
Heres one for the contest. I had written it a while back, but have gone through and revised the wording and the format. I hope you enjoy it, cause I really didn't have enough time to come up with a new poem. Thanks again for the invite. Fly
-
Bonnie. I'm so sorry but I just can't take it anymore. I tried and failed. I'm not enjoying this contest and have removed my poem. Please don't hold it against me. Chalk it up to my anxiety disorder. That's an excuse I understand but I feel my poem was being cheapened by the judging system.
I will continue to praise the Lord through poetry and I applaud all of you that are able to handle a contest like this. You have my admiration.
God bless,
Absinthe
-
I am sorry you decided to drop out of the contest. I think you had a wonderful entry and I will applaud it now that I'm able. There are some people out there giving pretty tough reviews. Or even worse giving good reviews then giving a low rating. Go figure? I wish you well. Write On. Fly
-
way cool!
This is an awesome idea! I've been seeing some really unique ideas for contests lately, it's really great! I want to enter, but I don't think I'll have the time to comment on everyone else's entries, so I think I'll sit this one out. I will, at least, read some and make sure to applaud my faves.
Good luck to all who enter!
~Goldmare~
May the Horse be with you -
Awesome contest BonnieQ! And I would've entered the poem I jsut wrote, but I remembered too late
. Instead I posted it on MY page so now it's a PREWRITE! But that's ok. I'm gonna rate your contest. I give it (out of 10) hmmmmmmmmm 1924. Yeah that should be it. 1925's a bit TOO high, mind you. 1923 is WAY too LOW!! Actually how bout 1,924.9 There. and NO ROUNDING up
(cheat grrrrrrr) Coll idea. (that should be cool, but I'm way too hyper to press backspace)
in Christ and God bless,
Evan -
lol......

This contest is proving how often people are being exposed to the whims of each individual judge, when entering contests. The way you have dealt with judging is by far the most "fair and impartial" contest out there. I didn't enter because I didn't think I would have the time needed, but I feel honored to help out in any way. I'll try to critique as many as I can get to and I hope everyone who enters has a good time with this contest.
Take care,
John -
I know you're thanking me my dear but I honestly forget for what. I am suffering from a lapse of memory here, don't quite know what I did to get the thanks, but you're welcome.
-
Hey Bonnie
I made a comment on my entry 'Tener Consensio' (translated: Soft Harmony) Explaining what applause to neglect and the point at which all comments on my entered prewrite are during the contest, yeah weird eh? haha. Just tryin to keep it fair.
in Christ and God bless,
Evan -
Perhaps, you'd like to check with Sandra Wellborn, Waltsan Publishing, Ft. Worth, Texas. By the way, does anyone recall an invitation going out to dittysri?

Jesus, this is taking forever Bonnie, you're killing me, I have to read all of these? Good lord.
-
Let us please use the name of our Lord with respect as He so richly deserves. He gives us sooooooooo much love and respect and at the very least we could return the favor.
Jesus is the name of our Lord, not just a way to start a sentence...
Thank you for such a fun contest BonnieQ. I enjoyed it so much. Hopefully you'll have another one in the furture...
Best wishes to all that enter.

Hi Bonnie,
Just wanted to say this was such an AWESOME contest!
I really loved it! God Bless you!

I would like to apologize to everyone about my short comments...my computers been down for 3 days so I had to do my commenting at work...when the boss wasn't looking over my shoulder...but at least "I" commented on all entries...as the rules state...Great contest Bonnie...peace abel
-
I sincerely appologize for not being able to read and rate all the poems in this contest. When I entered there were only a few, but lately I've been busy with quite a few missions and other tasks. It can often be hard to find internet time here Baghdad. Now I come back and there's a ton of new poems. I simply don't get enough online time (limited usually to 1 hour) to read and rate all of them now.
sighs -
I know I already made a comment on this but I wanted to say that this was by far the most fun and challenging contest that I have entered yet. The most challenging being: making sure I read and rated all the enteries. After carefully checking I think that I have. However I do have one question. Will it be held against us if we did not comment on the disqualified entries?
-
All reader reviews or applause cease to count at 7am PST today, 26 March 2004. The contest is closed. CONTESTANTS: Be sure to rate any entries you've not yet rated! Those are the only votes that will be added in after the time posted above. DO NOT RATE DISQUALIFIED ENTRIES! Final tallys will be posted on Sunday, 28 March.
Thank you EVERYONE! You've all been great and I'm amazed at the number of entries in this my first contest. Love and hugs, BonnieQ
Edited on Mar 26, 11:16 because ''. -
Dearest Bonnie - I am totally exhausted! LOL And totally mixed up, too ... I am struggling with my computer - pages that wouldn't open ... Sooooooooo: I am trying my best to check all the entries to keep my promise ... Wow - you've made us all work VERY hard. But I really enjoyed this competition. Thank you.
Myra -
god if you have to read all that was alot
-
Just letting you know, I have read and rated about half of the entries so far. I promise that I will finish it before Sunday
Don't think I've forgotten you all
-
I would just like to apologize for any short comments that I may have made. I send all of you hugs and best wishes!! I had some personal things come up and was really cramming in trying to be fair and rate everyones since I thought I was out of time before I got to use my computer.
This has been different for sure!! Quite a challenge and entertaining in a lot of ways. "Also, did everyone notice that this sure got the devil stirred up." Anyways, I think this has been a good way for all of us to get to know more about how each other writes as we have banded together in reading all entries. If we can keep from anyone having hurt feelings, this is a good form of fellowship. Well, let's all keep writing!! That is the important thing. God Bless and Hugs, Penny -
NOTICE CONTESTANTS: There are some contestants that haven't completed all their ratings. If those are not complete by Sunday, I will add an automatic 10 rating for each rating not given a contestant. This could make a difference in the final scores. So, you'd better get in there and make sure you've rated each contestant: at least those that haven't bee disqualified.
Also, AngelEyes711 got confused and temporarily removed her entry. It was back up today; thus, she needs to be rated by each of you. AND, she has gone through to re-rate all of you, because her ratings had been removed: this will show up Sunday as well.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! Love and hugs, BonnieQ -
Tell that to 5 million hispanics named Jesus, Wayne, and a million other spaniards named cristos.
-
Hey everyone!
I know one thing for sure, to my knowledge I have commented on everyone's poem, and if I haven't, it was an honest mistake (please let me know, if that is the case!) so I have been able to follow through with this. It was, surprisingly to me, a challenge to read them all and rate them. I have definitely grown in this contest though. Thanks for the contest BonnieQ, and good luck to all of you! Thank you for the opportunity to read your poems!
God bless you all, my brothers and sisters!
Sarah Beth -
I think I rated all the poems. If I missed one please let me know. This was a great contest, though I was surprised by some of the controversy that erupted. Thanks again for a challenging contest. Fly
-
WHEW I finished! There were a lot of entries
If I've forgotten to give a rating, let me know
Wonderful contest idea, BonnieQ! It has been a blessing to meet so many Brothers and Sisters in Christ
-
hi Bonnie hehe..lookie! I got a new contest hehe.
-
*CONGRATULATIONS* to the winners!
This really was a wonderful contest and a \fantastic\ experience!
Although now more than ever do I want that poll idea of mine ('Wondering . . .' in the 'Web Feaures & Bug Reports' messege board) to be instated
.
I also like how everyone had to comment on each other's work - while this may have been time consuming on everone's part, we all got insightful and beneficial comments on our poems
Thank you again, and it was great meeting you all
*God Bless*

I had to reply to this comment that you made because I was just thinking the same thing yesterday because I did notice how Satan got stirred up but I think the Spirit of Christ kept him at bay and put him back where he belongs. As long as you have Christ you can not have any enemies because Christ will protect you. My learning from Bible Study this week. I find it incredible the the way Christ will work into your everyday life what you are learning about him and guides you into the direction of his messages.
