Calling All LOTR Fans!

I entered a contest a while back asking for poems concerning "fantasy creatures" ie. elves, hobbits, trolls, wizards, vampires... etc. I was excited to enter a poem I'd written about the elves from Tolkien's LOTR and Silmarillion works. I was very disappointed when the contest holder commented that she wished she'd gotten less on the "Tolkien mythology".

Although I'd like to think it, I know I'm not the only huge fanatic about Tolkien and all his works, so I'd like to give all you other fans a chance to showcase your work concerning his.

This contest is for three hundred points, and I had to work hard to get them, so I will be using a very critical eye on all your works. You have a few choices, however they all have to do with Tolkien's work. I'd really prefer that those who enter write something on HIS work, and not on the movies, because the movie's do leave out a lot. However, I will take into consideration the fact that not everyone has read the books. And the movies are a wonder in themselves. My one constraint is that if you feel you MUST write something based on the movies, you may NOT, I repeat, may NOT, write something swooning over Legolas/Orlando Bloom. This contest is about the characters, story, and message Tolkien wrote... not about how hot the actors were who played them.

You may pick any of the choices below:

1) write about a specific character from Tolkien's work. Perhaps the one you most identify with. You aren't limited to LOTR, you may write from the Silmarillion or the Hobbit as well. What did this character go through? How are you similar to them? What happened after the story ended? (yes, you may take some poetic license and write what you think may have happened to them if you don't know.)

2) write about your favorite race or culture from Tolkien's work. Dwarves, elves, wizards, hobbits. Are you like or unlike them? Why? Your opinion, why they were the way they were... anything. Maybe you could write about the particular sorrows of a certain race. ie. how the ents lost the entwives etc. For an example of this, you can read my poem "The Longest Journey".

3) write about the villains from Tolkien's work. Come on, you know everyone loves the villains! Why was Sauron so twisted? Was he really as evil as Tolkien portrayed him? Was he worse? How did the orcs "come into being"? Be creative!

4) write about the friendship between Frodo and Sam. You can argue that it wasn't really that great, or that it saved the fellowship. Whatever you believe.

5) write about Gollum. Ok, I know I didn't single out any other character, but this guy gets neglected. Why not narrate his journey? It may have been the longest....

Ok, these are just suggestions and ideas. If you have something you REALLY REALLY want to write about, and it's not listed here, please IM me and let me know. Chances are I'll allow it. Now for the all important rules:

1) Poem's can be of any length so long as you keep my attention. I do have a pretty good attention span, so they'd have to be really really boring to lose me.

2) Poem's can be of any style, rhyming or no, the choice is yours. I only ask that you be poetic, and not prosy.

3) Again, because I feel it has to be repeated, do NOT write anything swooning over the actors. This contest is about Tolkien's work, and he had nothing to do with picking them! You will be immediately disqualified if you do this.

4) Another GREAT way to get disqualified is to use 'chat room' talk. No u's and h-8ing etc. It may cause me to lose my sanity.

5) Please be conscientious of your grammar and spelling. I won't be too hard on this, but come on people, proof read. Show me you're a writer.

If you have any questions, please feel free to IM me, or The CheshireKat as she will be helping me judge these wonderful pieces I know you're all about to submit! I'd say something like, "Just to make sure you read the rule, put Gollum in your author comments..." but I've always thought that was stupid. If you break the rules, I'll know you didn't read them!

And guys, please have fun with this. The options are only suggestions, I strongly encourage you to write what you feel inspired to write. It's only a contest and there will be more! I or Cheshire Kat will comment on every piece and there will be at least a few "honorable mentions" I'm sure.

Thanks for entering and Good Luck!!

NOTE
This doesn't seem to be clear enough in the rules, you MAY write about the movies if you haven't read the books, the only constraint is that you may NOT write something swooning over an ACTOR instead of a CHARACTER. If you feel the need to swoon over a character, be my guest. And again, RELAX! It's just a contest, and I do give points for bravery....

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on March 23, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 300
  • Final notes:
Guys, usually every contest ends with some comment about how hard it was to judge the entries. I'd like to say something similar, only it was fairly easy to pick which ones I liked best. Unfortunately, Cheshire Kat didn't have a chance to help me judge, so if you don't like the results, bug me, not her. The Standar by Shadowfaxrules got first place because frankly, it just really deserved it. The rhyme and meter were a little off in places, but I wasn't judging on poetic skill, I was judging on content. To me, the content just ruled. Shadowfaxrules took a very small detail from the books that wasn't in the movie and created a very in depth poem about it. I just love the idea; so congratulations on first place!
Aragorn's Pride by Kethry got second because it was definately the best portrayal of Aragorn done out of all the entries. It showed the anguish he endured when having to choose between his fear, and his destiny. It's incredibly difficult to claim leadership over others. How can one person do that? How do you say, "I am the one, that you must follow." I just felt that Kethry got those feelings and emotions across really well. Great portrayal of the character, and his struggle.
Finally, The Choice of the Evenstar by natazzle21 got third because this was another one that portrayed the character's struggle very well. It showed how hard it was for Arwen to make her choice, how much she gave up, but what I liked best was that it included what happened to her after Aragorn dies. Another great detail written well on the page. So, congratulations to all the trophy winners, Tolkien would be proud!

Also, honorable mentions (these will be in the form of applause) go to:

    The Gulls by dprssdwvmstr
    Frodo's Undying Love by Nienna
    Gollum by Hokiebaby3

Thanks so much for your enthusiastic input to this contest guys. It was v. well done. All the entries were fairly good, but those that won a trophy or deserved an honorable mention were outstanding. Congratulations to all the winners, and I hope you all enter my next contest which is sure to include Tolkien as well!!

Awesome idea Actually, I was just about to write a poem on Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series.

If you haven't read it yet, I suggest you do! It's a continuation of LotR - but it is so far after, all of the LotR stories are but legends in this world. It's really fun to pick out all the parellels

Well, I'll have to think on it a bit - if you don't see an entry from me, I wish you all the best in this contest of yours

I wish you the best with the contest and to all the writers who enter. I shall have to put on my thinking cap and see just what I can remember from the books. It has been quite a few years since my eyes wondered over the text bound within the covers. Thanx for giving back to the community.

Hi. You said we don't have to write about LoTR, taht it could be the Hobbit etc.... but what about his unfinished works. I got an original copy of the ones he was writing when he died, and some of them, i feel, could rival LoTR...if they were finished. But i don't want to write them if you don't know what i'm talking about. XXXX

Interesting to see what Tolkiens mythology means to all these entrants, what a mysterious thought-provoking man Tolkien was, it's great that he's so appreciated.
