The Keyword Puzzle

This contest is purely for my own selfish reasons.  I want lots of interesting and different poems to read.  I also want to read Old Poetry poems that you find interesting and inspiring.

I admit, there is some work on your behalf, and I don’t want any pre-writes…but the not so selfish bit is that I want to give away 650 points to someone deserving.

Instructions: (PLEASE…IM me if anything is unclear)

1. Go to
www.oldpoetry.com

2.
Select ONE keyword(s) from the following list.
One line = keyword(s).  Do not mix and match.

Treacherous hearts
Freedom
Simply beautiful
Dark lust
Summer Fields
Power of persuasion
A difficult mind
Official duties
Betrayed
Health Warning
Life spirit
Wedding plans
Soldier’s buttons
Trade up
Higher ground
Softly speaking
Under water

3.
Go the “Search” function of Old Poetry, and enter your keyword(s).  Search “All” for poems containing the keyword(s) you have selected. (you may narrow the “category”, for example, you may particularly want to write a “society” or “hope” poem, etc… but search “All” authors.  The wider the search the more results you will have to choose from).

4.
Choose a poem that inspires you from the search results, and write a response poem.

When selecting your inspiration piece think outside the square.  Don’t look for the likes of Poe and Shakespeare in the search results (although, you may certainly use them if so inspired) I am looking to read Old Poetry from authors I may never have heard of before.

Your response can be:
An attempt to emulate the author’s style
…A piece written based on the theme
…Or a poem about how the Old Poetry made you feel – how it relates to you.

Use your own words and make it original writing.
Important…while the keywords can, but don’t have to be the theme - use the keyword(s) somewhere in your poem.  They do not need to be grouped together, as long as they appear.

Your poem may be in any category, rhyme or free verse…but please classify erotic / adult themes accordingly.

With the number of results you will get for any given keyword(s) search, you are sure to find an Old Poem that inspires you to write.

5.
When posting your entry… author’s comments are required:

Mandatory
...Include the URL link to the old poem in your author comments.
...Include the keyword(s).

Optional, but advisable
You can either critique the poem on the old poetry site, or write your reasons for selecting the piece and your intentions in your author’s comments...(eg, is this you emulating, being inspired, or an emotive response?)  The more information you give me here, the better.

Hopefully, you’ll do both, but I’ll leave it up to you.  As long as you include the link to the source poem, so that I can then go and read it.  And, of course...the keywords.

6.
Spell Check.

7.
Post, so that I may read and enjoy, and so that you may hopefully win.

~

Maximum of one entry per. (although, if you are suitably inspired to write a second, by all means, IM me.  I'll be impressed if anyone is THAT keen.

~

Okay...Time to piece together The Keyword Puzzle!

~~~
OK.
I am making an amendment to the rules.
RE: the requirement for BOTH / ALL keywords in the string, to be in the inspiration piece... I would like it to be this way, but it would see that actually finding such a thing is quite difficult.
SO:  For example, if you choose - life spirit...your inspiration piece preferably has both, but can have one, or the other.
But, the entry you submit still requires BOTH keywords to be present.
I hope this makes things a little more entertaining...
Contest is Over
  • Contest was judged on March 9, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 650
  • Final notes:
    You have no idea how I agonized over the judging of this, I could have easily picked a number of these poems and they would all deserve trophies.
    At the end of the day, I had to choose. I looked at all of the source poems, and enjoyed the journeys that every single piece in this contest sent me on.
    1st: I just couldn't pass on this. Bukowski is a know poet to me, but the style and grace with which Jacob Jesus Escape's was delivered really impressed me.
    2nd: A piece of brevity and strength, it is tight, imaginative and a really good twist on the Old Poetry piece that stephanie sunshine took inspiration from.
    3rd: Is it enough to say that this just really touched me on some level I can't explain? I try hard when judging to do so and be true to the contest guidelines, sometimes it is hard not to let love influence the decision. This poem was also a very good take on what the zara saw in the original piece.
    That said...I loved all these poems on some level, and thank each of you for taking the time to enter my contest. You have given me hours of pleasure and graced me all sorts of treasures to gaze at.
    To anyone fortunate enough to open this contest for a read, I am sure you will find inspiration in reading of these pieces.
    I agree 100% with whims, that this is "worth the time without the points".
    (though I don't know about the value of quoting dead languages)
    (Insert Heiroglyphs or cuneiform here
    There were a lot of rules and conditions for this challenge.
    I thought something along the lines of teh topic Lakotas comment would have been easier.
    For me this was really a worthwhile challenge.
    I was lucky because I found a poem that I fell in love with.
    Makes me wish I had thought of writing this on my own.
    Cool cool. I shall search forthwith. Fine idea. I'd be very surprised if I find something inspiring with the words 'dark lust' (Sonnet 129?). But I will have a squiz. Excellent contest idea.
    I must thank you for such an excellent contest. I only chose 2 words and already I've found so many entertaining pieces to read. At this rate, I hope to find something inspiring, but even if not, there is so much to be read, that I have not even heard of. (plus I'll be using that search feature a whole lot more on oldpoetry.com) Let me know if you need some extra points, cause I've been trying to hold a contest, but perhaps I can just donate some to you for third and second places. Let me know
    ¨Peace, and thanks
    Hey...its called a contest and should present you with a CHALLENGE. What is the point of a trophy if the poem you wrote to win it took little or no effort?
    This isn't supposed to be a walk in the park, I just really hope not everyone is "too lazy" to have a go at it.
    If you would like to enter again, you may, it's not like anyone is beating my door down with entries ( ), and the whole point is to generate lots of interesting poetry to read. My only request is that you choose an entirely different theme...not that there is anything wrong with the first!! I just like variety
    Thanks, and I am glad you are getting something out of this.
    I just have to let you know what an awesome contest this is. I wish I could do another one. If you don't get too many entries; please let me know. It's so much fun to read the oldies but goodies and to bring them up to date. Especially for the younger crowd who perhaps has not been exposed to them. Great contest.
    Thanks to everyone so far, and I look forward to more entries (crosses fingers) before the closing date.
    The creativity of man never ceases to amaze me. The main idea is intriguing and it obviously takes time. The details are so precise and indepth. Just the thought alone impresses me. This was quite an idea. You should be proud of yourself, and so should everyone who entered. Best of luck!
