This is a poem I had entered in Allpoetry.com. I liked it so I sent it to a magazine asking if they could use it.
From the time writing it, contacting the magazine and hearing a reply the total time was 5 hours and I was ecstatic that the poem, I wrote had been chosen to be published in print, in the 50th Anniversary Edition of “The Scottish Genealogist” so quickly.
Their website can be seen at: *www.scotsgenealogy.com* should any of you be interested.
_Whose land is this?_
This is where the thistle opens,
where the honeysuckle and the
nettle embrace gently,
where the ptarmigan cries,
where the midges are happy.
Whose land is this
that the Gods, have chosen to bestow and
decorate, with the beauty of living things?
This is Scotland, land of my birth.
The land my fathers’ fathers’ and
beyond tended and loved, as I should,
in order to pass on, to my sons and daughters,
to their sons and daughters and still beyond,
to keep what the Gods foreseen for our future!
This is Scotland.
This is our Scotland.

50th Anniversary 1953 - 2003
For this contest, what I would like from the Poets in here is:
· An account of their visions of Scotland or visits to Scotland.
Ideally a name should be used if your poem is to be about a specific Scottish town or village, mountain or glen. If you’ve never been… why (?) but *www.visitscotland.com* is a good place to start
Or tell me - us about
· Your first published poem and please mention where, when and by whom it was published and if possible where we can see it.
As 300 points seems to be the minimum that anyone can win I have to award 300 points to the winner so,
1st = 300 points
2nd = 100 points
3rd = 75 points
but points will only be awarded if you enter so get in here and help me promote *Scotland the land of my birth…*

2nd place and 100 points goes to misnomer for the colourful characters he described.

Sincere congratulations to you on this wonderfully written poem!!
I Loved the picture it painted for me.
I hate to say ... that so far in my travels ....
I haven’t been to the UK yet, but will be going there this coming (2004) year.
It seems strange to me, that of all the places I’ve been ... it’s NI, and Scotland, More then anyplace else in this wide world, that for some unknown reason ... forever tug at my heart strings.
In fact ... has been calling to my soul since before I really even understood how far away from me they are!!
To me ... Scotland seems an incredible place to be!!
I can hardly wait to get there!!
So I’ll be checking out this contest of yours with an Extra amount of heartfelt interest.
And may even try to enter something of my own in it. -

yikes...I missed your last contest where I would have been able to write well about my own home!!! This is a challange, since I have never been more than 300 miles from home...lol...and the only country that includes from here is Canada! But...if reading accounts for anything, I should be able to write about scotland and WHY I continued to read about the clans in the first place!
HOPE I do not miss this one...best of wishes and good luck in your contest...~genielassie~ -
I'll have to get busy writing, this is one that i could possibly do. After all a couple years ago i did visit scotland and i loved it and that's why i plan to go back this summer (hopefully) or next if i can't.

A beautiful poem , but unfortunately I have never been to Scotland and it is not feasable timewise for me at this moment to do much research on it
It sounds like you are definitely proud of your country as you should be and I hope your contest is a success

Beautiful poem. I had a lot of fun with this contest. I'm part scottish myself, so it's interesting to see the wonders that my ancestors did through my mind's eye. Thanks!
