December Contest for New Members- Supernatural Experiences

It's December, so I'm going to straight away avoid the cliche of doing a Christmas contest. There'll be enough poems about chestnuts roasting on an open fire and sleighs in the snow without me further encouraging them.

I'm reading Steven King's Bag of Bones at the moment, and I'm in the mood to read a good piece of spooky paranormal stuff. So, in the interests of trying something new, that's what this contest will be about.

THE IDEA
Write me a poem (any form) or short story about the spookiest thing that's ever happened to you. It can be anything from a full blown haunting to a UFO sighting to just a funny case of premonition.

THE RULES
1. Any number of entries
2. Pre-writes are ok
3. Minimum length is 15 lines, a good story needs some length
4. I'm not fussed about swearing or adult content, but bear in mind some of the other Greeters may be.

AWARDS
First Place- 250 points
Second Place- 75 points
Third Place- 50 points

So, to clarify. I want a poem about your spookiest, weirdest, or most interesting supernatural experience. If you feel like inventing one, I won't know, so I guess it's    to me, right?

Have fun.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on January 4, 2004
  • Rewards: Gold: 250
  • Final notes:
Right off the bat, I have to thank everyone for the phenomenal response the contest got- you definitely made sure the greeters had a lot of reading to do. And it was a pleasure.

I love the paranormal and all of that stuff. wants to be a paranormal investigator when she grows up, also
Great idea, it's creative of you to come up with this idea for a contest besides the common Christmas one.
I always wanted to get that book you're reading now and read it. I always see it in BOOKSMITH, but I never have the money to get it. I heard it's a VERY good book. How is it so far?
Anyhow, good luck with judging. I may slink back to this contest to read some supernatural writes. TTFN - ta ta for now.

Bag of Bones is probably the best Stephen King I've read in a long time, and that's saying something when you consider I've read 'Dreamcatcher', 'The Shining', and 'From a Buick 8' recently. The characters are all very well developed, and it's less weird than some of his other stuff.

Now I'm reading 'Hearts in Atlantis', lol.

The book is a lot better than the movie (which I enjoyed, but it kind of let me down). It goes into more character detail, and the ending is vastly different. It's well worth the read.

"Dream Catcher" was wonderful. Someone here sent me a message to enter ya CONTEST. I am happy to meet you all the way over there in Australia. I am in the USA. I have submitted a horrorhumor poemstory all in one. It is entitled: They Float Down Here. But the title got changed to the first line after I submitted it. I hope the picture selected for it is okay. That is cousin Eddie in the tub and not the phantom that tried to get me when I was five.

hey... an answer, so i can decide if I have anything I can put here (some people can probably just create a poem for the contest, but not me)
is it okay if the poem uses supernatural/paranormal imagery, even creates a supernatural /paranormal mood, but is ultimately about prosaic things? I don't enjoy writing fictional poetry and have never had a truly supernatural experience.
Then again, somethings in here don't even have a hook that thin, but I'd still like to hear if the moderator thinks that's close enough for government work, so to speak.

No worries mate, I didn't expect everyone to have had a genuine supernatural experience. I know I've never really had one.

If you can pull it off, go ahead- I look forward to reading what you come up with.

They'll be announced fairly soon. There's a lot of entries to go through, and each greeter has got to pick our favourite three. So it'll take a bit to read, comment, and compile.
