So here we are - poets from all over the country and all over the world. We know each other by our poetic names but we are all actual people, too, away from these poetic pages. Share a little of your world with us. Tell us a little something about where you live. What is it about your town that you like, hate, love, despise? What do you see when you look out of your living room window? When driving to work? Give us a glimpse into your surroundings so that we can picture you there when reading your poetry....perhaps understand a little better where your words come from. For those of you who may not want to divulge exactly where you live then your region or state will do. Any style will do...300 points to the one which strikes me the best. Give us a chance to know you better. Invite us into your world....
I'm right here in Ft. Lauderdale
One of the few not out on bail.
The city of fun in the sun.
I saw it once - in '91.
I see palms swaying in the breeze
And watch for swimming refugees
Who've risked it all - all that they own
To come and make our town their home.
The snowbirds chase the early birds,
Attack the Rascal House in herds.
We have a big state lottery
And Indians sell smokes, tax-free.
Each year the tourist hoards invade,
Wear yellow shorts...drink Gator-Ade.
Though they invade our beach like leeches
We smile at all those sons of beaches.
Why do we smile? The simple fact is
Thanks to them, there's no state taxes
So we just smile and say hello
Then cheer the day they finally go.
Our bird - the plastic pink flamingo
Our slogan - "Hot damn! I've got Bingo!"
With Spanglish our official lingo
And foreigners are known as "gringo".
If one can disregard the lootings,
Pay no mind to the drive-by shootings,
Laugh at corruption in city hall,
This is a great place, after all!!!

Lol... what a delightful poem
I've been to Ft. Lauderdale briefly... my daughter and I were there in 1997 and also took a day cruise to Grand Bahama... it was in April and the weather was perfect.....a very enjoyable time for us.
Fortunatly for us... and everyone, we didn't happen to run into the drive by shootings and lootings. My sis and her husband have since moved to Flrida and I'm going to be visiting them later. I think the name of the town where they live is Citrus Springs..something lke that, and I have a cousin there...lives in Micanopy (not sure of that spelling) Anyway... I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your home town
Maybe I can think of something worthwhile to write about Phoenix and my current life and surroundings.

I;m sure you can, Dee!
I wuz so sad when I left Phoenix
I went through a box of Kleenix!!
LOL! Glad you liked reading about mine...I'll enjoy yours, I'm sure!

Brisbane - Queensland - except perhaps for the Palm Trees our towns aren't much alike. I enjoyed the visit to your place though Mike, fortunately missed the shooting and looting - thank goodness.
Good Luck with your contest.

Wow Balladeer, your final notes were terrific. I felt like I was reading an editorial for a movie, you mentioned all the characters along with some background on each. Great contest and congratulations to the winners.
