Hi, Folks!
Thanks for checking out my first contest.
I want this to be fun for all those who choose to enter...and I want to enjoy reading the entries, too. So, I've tried to come up with guidelines that will ensure this happens.
GUIDELINES I have, for many years, collected quotations that speak to some truth in my heart. So, explanation of my personal quirks aside,
here are the guidelines for entry:
1. Choose a quotation from the list below and write a poem which either:
a)expresses the meaning of the quotation,
expounds on its meaning, or
c)refutes its meaning.
2. Prewrites are acceptable if they fit the rest of the
criteria. I will probably give a bit more preference in
judging to original stuff, though.
3. Either copy and paste the quotation you select, or type the name of the author of the quote into your "author's notes". If you don't let me know which quote your poem refers to, I will disqualify your entry.
4. Poems may be any style.
5. Spelling and grammar count!
Big Hint: In case you haven't figured it out already, I really love poems that make me think or laugh.
Now, for the quotations list:

Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune intoned in the distance by an invisible player --Albert Einstein
One may not reach the dawn save by the path of the night --Kahlil Gibran
Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. --Bobby, age 7
When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you. -- Tin Cup Movie
The soul is that which denies the body. For example, that which refuses to run when the body trembles, to strike when the body is angry, to drink when the body is thirsty. -- Alain, 1953
When childhood dies, its corpses are called adults. -- Brian Aldiss
The only Zen you find on the tops of mountains is the Zen you bring up there. -- Robert M. Pirsig
Life is just a chance to grow a soul. --A. Powell Davies
He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. --Friedrich Nietzsche
What we think, we become. --Buddha
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop. -- Lewis Carroll
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been. -- Wayne Gretzky
NOTE: I will be awarding additional points for 2nd and 3rd place, and may award points to any additional entries I find interesting.
Hope you'll enter...and have fun!

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 25, 2003
- Rewards: Gold: 300
- Final notes: First: Thank you all so much for entering. I was amazed at the beautiful poetry this contest generated. It was extremely difficult to judge as all the entries touched my heart and were excellently done. In recognition of that, I have decided to give all the entrants that I wasn't able to honor with a trophy an award of recognition in the amount of 15 points. I also added an additional non-trophy award category of honorable mention, which gets an award of 50 points.
Second: Because there were such great entries, I was having quite a tough time...then, my clever Muse suggested that I use my criteria for judging and select for top honors those poems that both employed humor and made a profound statement. So, it became somewhat easier to judge this...but, not easy. At any rate, after much angst filled deliberation, I arrived at my decision.
Here are the results:
1st Place - silica - Foucault's Metronome
2nd Place - fleetingshadows - In Pursuit of Happiness - 200 pts.
3rd Place - HappyWanderer - Too Full (contest version) - 100 pts.
Honorable Mention: AngelSeeker - The Path of Night - 50 pts.
As far as I am concerned, I am the greatest winner here. I got to enjoy and feel a part of some truly wonderful poetry. What an honor this has been. Thank you all.Entries [12]

This is a good idea and these are all thought-provoking quotes, I'll see if I can come up with anything . . .

Hi MuseStalker,
Loved the quotes, especially, "The only Zen you find on the tops of mountains is the Zen you bring up there."
My poem Too Full would have gone well with the quote, "When childhood dies, its corpses are called adults." Unfortunately, it's already posted. Is it too late to enter it here? If so, I'll just keep rifling through the files. lol
Thanks,
Mark -
The more the entries, the more there's a merrier me.
I love reading these...and knowing I, in some way, inspired others to write poetry. How awesome is that?!! So, bring 'em on!
-
I like that one too.
Seriously, glad you enjoyed them. I have about 6 MS Word docs FULL of quotations I've collected over the years. I used to keep little strips of paper (like those Chinese fortune cookie ones, y'know?) with one quote on each in a basket on my desk - for my clients to select from. I called them "mind candy". It was hard to narrow down to the ones I listed above. But, I think the ones I picked are some of the best.
-
No...absolutely not. Pull that baby out and post her here! Like I said...the more the merrier for me.
-
Make you think or make you laugh? Come now, you can't honestly expect me to do just ONE of those... Heh heh, both it was, without any intention on my part what-so-ever!
That Muse is a tricky little bugger, isn't it? Sneaky thing! Ah well... This was a fun contest to enter, and hopefully I'll be inspired to write another entry for this!
-
Great looking contest - I think I'm gonna have a go at this one cause one or two of the quotes you have written caught my eye. Really interesting stuff!
