Why-ku

I am looking for haiku with a twist… it must ask a question.  Here are some examples from my own works:

Why do small dogs bark
at critters three times their size
with razor sharp teeth?

why do stars cascade
whenever you wonder by
puncturing my heart?

What is the meaning
I shout into the darkness
the meaning of life ?

Did you see petals
spattered across needless graves
fragrant crimson tears?

As you can see they can be about any subject, but they should make me stop and think about the answer.  I want an emotional response, be it laughter or tears or just “oh my I liked that.”

Rules:

Yes they must all be phrased in the form of a question.

I prefer the 5-7-5 format if I you have fewer syllables per line I will not disqualify you, but if you have more I’m sorry but you will need to change it or defend (your count) it, or I won’t judge it.  (I use two sites to double check word counts, as some words are pronounced differently in different regions)

Any subject is fine; if you’ve read any of my poetry you’ll know that I have very eclectic tastes. (But I’m warning you I don’t care much for some of the gross out stuff I’ve read in other contests.)

Prewritten is fine, just let me know because I’m curious as to how many of you have written in this form before.

That’s it… now get writing.
P.S.  it wouldn’t hurt your chances if you commented on my stuff,  if you like one of them great, but I won’t hold negative comments against anyone.  I like honesty and I’m here to improve my work.  Just try to be tactful.

Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

Patti

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 9, 2003
  • Rewards: Gold: 400
  • Final notes:
First I want to thank everyone for entering; and apologize for taking so long to select and post the winners. There were so many wonderful entries that I had a really hard time choosing my favorites. Yesterday I finally made a decision, but before I could post the results and finish commenting on every whyku (I promise to remark on every one) I jammed my finger and ripped the nail loose. (Ouch and TMI) It’s really hard to type with one finger in a splint, but impossible to believe the pain without it. I tried last night to type a few words and post the winners, but I had to admit that it was beyond me. Much better tonight… but typing is a trick.

I choose the winners partly based upon my gut reaction; or first impression. Although with the bronze I chose it because it seemed one of the things that shouldn’t be but often is. First place goes to “Wonders of Love” by ihchicky; second to “Why” by leance; and third to “unfair” by sampelette. I have two honorable mentions that were in really close contention for a trophy “Why” by nelak and “Cloning” by mina nagi. There were many others that came really close and I hope that my comments will explain where my thoughts were and what I look for in my contests. The comments that I’d finished pre-trauma will be posted soon the other will be as time (Christmas is really busy for me) permits.

    Thank you,

    Patti

Don't worry I'm working on judging this contest. Thanks for all the entries. The Thanksgiving holiday got me a little behind because I didn't have access to a computer while I was out of town.

Sorry this is taking so long... These are very good. I've narrowed it down to 5 or 6 and I'm trying to figure out how to rank those. Tonight or tomorrow, I promise.
