Every night, in almost every home a TV is flicked on.
Every morning, pages are turned and we learn
of what is going on in our world.
And herein lies your challenge. Pick a news story, a topic that really had an affect on you…and poetize it. Work your magic and do what you do.
Your source could be anything…
I want to hear about news from all over the world, from your local town, your local paper. If you feel inclined to include quotes from your source feel free, in fact…its encouraged.
It doesn’t have to be dark news, but the story must have had a profound affect on you – made you feel a lot of emotion – the kind of story that makes you cry, or maybe angry…perhaps you rolled off the chair laughing…whatever.
Think of your self as a roving reporter for the Odyssey News Channel, and think to make it profound, entrancing, or just plain insane.
Rules...
Please, please – spell check.
Limit 1 per each of you.
Form…
Rhyme / Free Verse I don’t mind, but I am looking for good, solid and most importantly – original writing.
Length…
Try to avoid an epic, but tell your story. I would think up to thirty lines might be plenty, but if I’m riveted to right to the end then that will be the real test, I’m not going to sit and count them or anything like that.
Other then that, the only other rule would be to have fun with it and be creative…don’t be limited to “commercial” TV and print – some kooky news story would probably make for an entertaining and unique read.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on December 1, 2003
- Rewards: Gold: 400
- Final notes: Well, thank you so much for entering, I loved all of the poems, they showed me your world and how it relates to you, how it effects you, which is what I wanted to see. I laughed, giggled and cried. Some of the poems were really well researched and it was obvious time had gone into their thinking. This was my first contest, and it was harder then I thought to be the one who decides...you really do wish there were more then three places.

I like the logo...took me a USA in the fifties or something. Well, still, what seems to be a creative idea for a contest...good luck to the entrees and god speed on the judging.
Peace

this is a good idea for a challenge. I hope you have fun with the judging. If my muse allows I'll enter.
-
Excellent! I will have to give this some thought. It's not been the nicest week for news, what with our Royals involved in alleged "acts" (ooo er), trials of alleged murderers, and people being blown up. Thanks for the invite. Although social comment is not really the domain of the worm, I do offer some witless meanderings from time to time. Will cogitate.

This sounds like a cool topic; I never really pay attention to the news; which is kind of shallow since I'm the Editor-in-Chief of The Free Press, but I'll try to find a topic that affects me, I don't know if there is one?
-
This is an awesome idea for a contest Ody. I actually AVOID the news because it most times makes me cry. That is why this contest is a good idea

-
ace contest... hmmmm no news in this hellhole of a sham of a town -
im going to have to look more far out
-
This is such an original topic for a contest... for once something that's not like... ooo, look at me, I'm depressed, so make me more depressed. Which is cool, because you can only take so much of that. Well, I'll be looking around for something that actually affects me... Great idea!

Good poem
Great poem. enjoyed reading it. -
Hiya there... interesting topic for a poem. I was clicking on here to return a favor to ya' and found this instead... something to think about for sure. If I find my muse speaking through the channel ten priorities- I will surely ponder a poem for this one.
Again, cool topic for sure!

Now THIS, I think, is a GREAT idea for a contest!! This is a great way to get unique views and opinions, while still keeping a distinctly personal flavor .. wonderful idea!

I know that I have already commented on this... but I was wondering... are prewrites allowed? Because I have a poem that is based on my friend's death, a year ago November 3rd, and this one year aniversary of both his and his brothers death was basically the news in our town... so... please let me know. Thanks!
~Christy -
Interesting concept for a poetry concept! I love the idea! Will have to think about it for awhile, see what, if anything, I can come up with. If I do, I'll certainly give this a go. As it stands, I'm very impressed with your creative idea for a contest! Brilliant! Best wishes in the judging. That's never an easy thing. Pen on!--Kel

k, am loving the entries so far. I like recieving a little bit of news every now and then, and there have been some really good stories. Thank you for taking the time guys!
For anyone wondering to enter, but wanting to enter with a prewrite, I want specific relation to a particular story, like you kept it or something. With all the news that gets pumped into our oceans there are plenty of topics to choose for a unique and interesting poem. My best to all who enter the contest, and I want to see lots of comments on these poems so that I can use others critiques to help with a judging.
Much love and all that mushy stuff..

This sounds fun. I don't know if I can come up with an entry, but I'll be sure to read a few. Then again who knows the muse could strike at any time.

Sounds ingenious. I don't read or watch the news much but, I did dabble in Journalism in college. Thought I wanted to be a writer for National Geographic but Dance got in the way. I am going to try my hand at it. Sounds like loads of fun. But for this moment, I'll go read and comment on some entries so I can see what I'm up against.
Thanks for holding such a literary contest!

Interesting, Odyssey! I hope you get some more entries ... Perhaps I can twist the arm of one of my Muses to help me along ...
Take care. Myra

good luck to all in the contest (to include judging). -
Oooooooh how thrilled is the worm?!!! Some really good poems in the contest, so it's very undeserved, but I am well chuffed. Haven't won one for over a month, and that was, er, the World's Worst Poem contest.
That's brightened up my rainy English week, that has
Even Beatniqe wasn't disgusted, apparently!
Thanks for a fun contest.
My turn to do Worm contest no.5, but I'm terribly stumped for ideas ........

It is so deserved! ~rolls eyes~ lol worlds worst poem contest hey? I don't see how that can be good for your poetry's self-esteem. lol
Well, I think you really really deserved it and others agree your poem is a winner.
Its not just my fav poem from the contest, its one of the finer poems on AP. Thankyou for going to the effort of writing it!
