DARK WRITES ONLY
This contest consists of three different prompt options… a picture, a word bank and three quotes to choose from. Choose one of the prompts and create your poem around it
If you so choose you may select any TWO prompts to base your poem upon; i.e. picture and word bank, word bank and quote, quote and pic… you get the idea.
Major note here since I have been getting entries in many of my contests that do not follow all the rules… READ and FOLLOW all rules or you may face DQ! If there is something that has been missed I will let you know in my comment and you will have until judging to correct it. If it’s not corrected by judging… DQ.
Prompt 1: The picture above…
Tell me who they are... what they do… what is there purpose? Witches? Killers? Monsters? Simply devious twins? There are endless possibilities!
You may not make them lovers, and no erotica (no I’m not homophobic, I just think it would be cliché to create a “lover” poem around a pic like that). Anything else about the two is fair game.
Prompt 2: Word Bank
20 words listed… you must use all words in your poem… any form of the word is okay! You must list the words in your AN in the order you used them so I can be sure you used them all.
Insidious
Revelation
Atone
Raving
Stark
Malcontent
Reservoir
Morass
Diligence
Opaque
Myriad
Amass
Undulate
Resistance
Quagmire
Oubliette
Resilience
Putrid
Intrinsic
Fallacy
Prompt 3: Quotes
Choose a quote from below and write your poem based on what the quote inspires.
For death begins at life’s first breath, and life begins at touch of death - John Oxenham
I hate life for it will not release me
I hate death for it will not embrace me. - Midian
Death, the one appointment we all must keep, and for which no time is set - Charlie Chan
And the general contest rules:
1. Free verse and rhyme ONLY! And if it's rhyme make it GOOD! No erotica, No prose and no dirty/pretty
2. No TYpiNg lIkE ThiS or LIKE THIS.
3. Proper spelling, grammar and punctuation a MUST. If something isn’t right I will let you know and you will have until judging to correct it, or face DQ.
4. 75 line maximum
5. List your chosen prompt(s) in your AUTHOR NOTES. If you choose a quote prompt simply list which quote you chose.
6. No bashing of other poets… heck no bashing in general.
7. If you choose the picture as your prompt credit the artist; Sylvia Ji.
8. I would prefer that entries to this contest do not get entered in any other contest while this one is open. Doing that makes it seem like it’s just not good enough to wait and see if you’ve won anything. So, if your poem is placed in any other contest this rule will be copied to my comment and your poem will be DQ’ed and removed.
9. If something is unclear feel free to message me with your question(s)
10. If you have read and understood all of the rules of the contest put “Superman is my hero” in your AN along with your prompt choice
Oh yes, everyone can enter two poems but each entry must be based on a different prompt!
AND for every 5 entries I receive the trophy count will increase by one. If I am impressed by the quality of the entries, points will go up.
I think that’s all I can think of… hmm… if I think you didn’t read the rules you will be asked to read them and fix anything you didn’t follow… or… you guessed it… face DQ.
Impress me and…

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 20
- Rewards: Gold: 600, Silver: 300, Bronze: 150, Honorable mention: 5 people
- Final notes: Whew... ok another hard one! Sorry for the lag in judging folks, but there has been a lot on my plate these last couple weeks so I appreciate everyone's patience. Every single entry just blew me away, as they always do. This go around I Just went with the poems that seemed to sit right with me when I read them. It was like, as I was reading something clicked and just drew me in and I couldn't pull away. That was really what I had to resort to because every poem was executed wonderfully and had everything in the right place at the right time. Thank you all for entering, no hard feelings if you didn't win, and I hope to see you all in my future contests!
