To Write Love on Her Arms

To Write Love on Her Arms Day will be celebrated on November 13, my birthday. As one who has suffered the torment of silence and the facade of life without love, this seems like a perfect correlation of holidays.

Why, you ask?
According to the facebook event page, "To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery." (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=180283055427&ref=nf)

That's your prompt, anything to do with To Write Love on Her Arms Day. Take it as you will. No rules. I don't DQ, but if it doesn't fit it obviously won't win and probably won't get a comment.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on November 19
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
There was some seriously amazing poetry here. I thank everyone for caring enough about this cause and organization to enter. The poems were each judged on flow/rhythm, tone, word choice, relevance to the prompt, and metaphor. Agree or disagree as you like, but those are the things I find important in poetry for my contests.
Congrats to the winners, and thanks again all! I truly enjoyed experiencing these.
    Take care,
    Kelsey-Jo

My niece, a senior in college, sent me the information on TWLOHA day; the organizers ask people to write the word "Love" on their arms creatively, and then to put the picture of one's arms with that message on Facebook or Youtube -- the hope is to get an overwhelming number of supporters to let those struggling as you said with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide know how many of us care about them. And if people ask about the writing on our arms, we can increase awareness of the issues involved. Thank you for a thoughtful and helpful contest! Lita

Exactly! And, since it lands on my 21st birthday, I plan on bringing some metallic sharpies out with me and getting my friends to write it on their arms as well. I think all too often people degrade emotional issues like depression and self-injury, but they are very valid and scary problems. These people don't need to be mocked, they need hope, support, and love.

Yes, I tried to tell two of my (actually very good) friends about this, but they totally couldn't understand it. I finally got them to at least think about the pressures that young people are under, and to consider the suicide rates among high school and college students. Everyone has to become aware of this, so that we can "write love" and show love. Lita

Agreed! I only wish I could have learned about it years earlier. But, now that I do know, I support it as completely as I know how. (=
