Welcome if you come from the first round, and stay if this is your first visit as this second round is open to all of you, my pretties......
Introducing your 4 judges (yes plural) - TheCSIgurl, ParadoxicalMetaphor, Soyez gentils, and myself (Melee Vau).
It's good to know something about your judges before a contest. We each bring our unique life experiences to this contest. We span decades (16 to 56 years of age), continents (2 Aussies/1 USA/1 UK), life experiences (still at school/working/home and kids/grandkids/none), poetry styles (dark/light/haiku/rhyme/free-verse), and heaps more.....
We have just finished the first of this four rounds contest based on prompts (NEW poets welcome). Each round consists of a different type of prompt: movie, literary, famous person, and picture.
This round is OPEN TO NEW POETS and ALL FIRST ROUND ENTRANTS. Those who make the shortlist of the trophies and HMs will be able to progress to the next 2 rounds (famous people quotes and finalists from that round will be eligible to enter the final round picture prompts). The winner of the final round (the overall winner) will win a bonus amount of points still to be determined
This round is based on literary quotes, so below are the 10 we have chosen:
1) Sea and Sardinia by D. H. Lawrence
"Comes over one an absolute necessity to move. ...."
2) Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found there by Lewis Carroll
" 'Twas brillig and the slithy toves, Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe..."
3) Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett
"they give birth astride of a grave"
(4) More Fruits of Solitude by William Penn
"Death is but crossing the world, ......"
5) The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald
"Everyone suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine:...."
6) The Catcher in the Rye, by J D Sallinger
"you felt like you were disappearing every time you crossed a road."
(7) Possession by A S Byatt
"There is a place to which all Poets come
Some having sought it long, some unawares,
Some having battled monsters, some asleep
Who chance upon the path in thickest dream,
Some lost in mythy mazes, some direct
From fear of death, or lust of life or thought
And some who lost themselves......"
8) Much Ado about Nothing by William Shakespeare
"I would my horse had the speed of your tongue . . ."
9) The Red-headed League by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
"Beyond the obvious facts that he has at some time done manual labour, that he takes snuff, that he is a Freemason, that he has been in China, and that he has done a considerable amount of writing lately, I can deduce nothing else."
10) Dracula, by Bram Stoker
"Do you not know that tonight, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway?"
Any style is fine, providing that it makes sense and is done to the very best of your abilities! We do, however, each have personal preferences, so we'll list them a little further on.
RULES: Ha. Rules!
(You knew they had to come...)
1) No erotica, please. Any of this will definitely be removed.
2) Try to keep the poems on the short rather than the long side. 40 lines max. is our final decision. If you do happen to go over, we will very likely skim read the piece, and it won't have a place in the finals.
3) No dissing anyone's religion. I'm not saying no religious content, but please don't turn this into grounds for debate/abuse.
4) PREWRITES welcome, but they MUST fit one of the quotes and you can only enter ONE. Please be aware, if you enter a PW, we will be giving extra votes to original poems and will DQ any PWs that don't match a prompt
5) Copy the prompt you use in your AN (don't forget to include original title and author)
6) If you use a picture, make sure you give credit in your AN
OUR INDIVIDUAL PREFERENCES:
TheCSIgurl: I love short *jumps up and down* sweet, and to the point poetry. If you can throw in a tear-jerker as well, then I'd be much obliged. On the other hand, I also appreciate the other end of the spectrum too, and if you can make me laugh my socks off, then go for it! Be warned: although I adore structure and rhyme, forced rhymes and off-beat rhythms will probably kill your chances with me. Plus, I'm a grammar nazi...muhuhuhuhuh....(no commenting on my fragments...)
Melee Vau: I love dark n' deadly but really appreciates when humour (dark that is) is so good it breaks through the gloom and a smile slowly dawns. Rhyme or don't rhyme, but do it well! and bad spelling can go to hell!!
Soyez Gentils: I am not really into love poetry and much prefer the prompt is interpreted rather than a retelling of its origin. I think it is great if they are then made your own. I love rhymes if they are clever and humour; oh, and not too long please.
ParadoxicalMetaphor: Just surprise me!
