I am sending you this poem written in the persona of a grandmother. However, I do not have much rapport for the idea of Allpoetry "families". I have very little time - and a great deal of work to get through.

Moreover, I deduce from the way you write that you live in the USA. I have visited there many times - but the most recent was over 20 years ago. And although I find much to admire about your country - I find various aspects of its ethos and beliefs, particularly as they relate to personal relationships and behaviour, VERY strange.

So I do not feel I could reasonably give you the kind of Grandmotherly advice you are presumably seeking.

But I must say it is refreshing to find someone in the USA who perceives the importance of grandparents.

Margaret Mead, the sociologist wrote somewhere that a major cause of family problems in the USA began when school-teachers, trying to integrate immigrant children to the "American way of life" - in effect encouraged them to mock their parents' imperfect English and to refuse to listen to grandparents' tales of "how it was in the old country".

I do not have the specialized knowledge to know whether she was correct - however, she was deemed a great expert.

    Good luck to you!
