The inspiration for this contest came from my two-year-old, who told me this afternoon that I was his "personal penguin". (That will make perfect sense if you have read the Sandra Boynton book entitled such)
The funniest thing was that he could not understand why I found that funny. I mean, c'mon! Everyone needs a personal penguin, right?
So I have decided to host a contest in his honor, and he will help me judge it.
I will be looking for creativity and an ability to appeal to the whimsical fancy of a literary toddler. He will be looking for words that sound funny and/or rhyme.
Vocabulary can be over his head since I don't dumb much down for him and that is why he uses words like "ridiculous", "refreshing" and "rhinocerous" in their proper context. (Not to brag
) Length is an issue, however, since he has the attention span of a two-year-old. A poem that fascinates him will hold his fancy for about 20 lines, after which he tends to get restless. (Just thought I'd warn you)

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on October 20, 2009
- Rewards: Gold: 700, Silver: 500, Bronze: 350, Honorable mention: 4 people
- Final notes: This contest was a lot of fun to judge, especially since each entry was read with a toddler in my lap to gauge his reaction.
To be honest, his reaction was the deciding factor in the judging process. There were some poems that I truly enjoyed that (for whatever reason) did not capture his attention, but were still excellent writes.
Thank you all for taking the time to enter this, and I hope you continue to delight audiences of adults and toddlers alike!

I submitted a poem that is a bit longer than 20 lines. I hope the 20 lines was not a hard limit as I feel my poem has exactly what you are looking for and if your son gets bored...well then it did not deserve to win anyways. I hope this is ok.

No, it is not a hard limit at all, just a fair warning for those not familiar with the fickle nature of toddlers.
LOOK! SOMETHING SHINY!!! -
Thank you
Thanks :-)
