Drugs, Diabetes & Sugar Levels!

I've no idea how successful this contest will be but oh well dont know until youve tried ey?

I'm in the process of writing a book about diabetes, and im told that having a hypoglycemic attack is a lot like being drunk
But depending on who you are, depends on whether the experience is good or bad

Anyway, im having a bit of a block when it comes to describing her "episodes" so i want some REALLY DESCRIPTIVE AND EMOTIONAL pieces detailing SPECIFICALLY about the options below.

The rules for this competition are strict and simple.

I want a poem about one of these things:

The effect alcohol has on you, personally, or someone you know, i mean mentally and physically, i want to experience it just as you/they would. Negative or Positive poems are welcome!

Some other form of drug, illegal, medical, recreational, just tell me the experience when on the certain drug. I want to be inside their state of mind!

If you are diabetic, and ONLY IF YOU ARE, write me a piece on your experience of hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic attacks, i have written a few so if it helps...:
http://allpoetry.com/poem/5118749
http://allpoetry.com/poem/5212827

I want them to be descriptive, with real emotion and experience in them, not just "oh it was terrible" i want real psychotic episodes going on! well ok not exactly but still

If you were confused by any of that then contact me and hopefully i can help!

Otherwise i shall comment every poem, and i dont want to DQ anyone so dont make me!

Depending on how well this may go, ill add HMs

Good luck!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on October 14
  • Rewards: Gold: 450, Silver: 350, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 5 people
  • Final notes:
Well finally judged and it was difficult as ever.
Loved all the various entries that were given and the wonderful talent that was in my competition.
Have a gander at gold, silver and bronze, but the HMs were in no particular order, just in what one was put into my contest first as it would have taken me another day to order them in preferance. Wish i couldve given others HMs too. But, just to say, thank you all for your entries and i hope to see you in another one of my contests!

    Good Contest

I have a sister who is diabetic and I often watch her go through episodes of sugar drops. It is true if you did not know her you would mistake her for being drunk because the reaction is much the same. You can not reason with a drunk person and you can not reason with a person whose sugar levels have dropped. Then it's time to call the EMS because you can not get sugar down them. My sister keeps juice boxes on hand because it is the easiest way to get sugar into her. If she won't drink it you just squeeze it into her mouth, she has no choice but swallow. It is a very scary sight.

    I might enter something
I'm type one diabetic, plus I've been drunk/high too many times to count, so I know the physical feeling too too well.
If you have any questions or anything, you can message me.

That would be awesome, ive always wondered how different it is to be having a hypo when drunk or something so a poem on that would be awesome... apart from like the experience youve had...

How long have you been diabetic?
13 years for me =/ remember the orange syringes when i was only little haha it was a nightmare!
      Thanks!

I've been diabetic since I was 10, so it's been nine years for me. I still can't get it under control. It's such a freaking pain to deal with. I wish they would find a cure.
It's weird how being hypoglycemic or drunk or high or having a manic episode (I'm bipolar too) can all feel similar in ways. I have one prewrite that I wrote when I was so out of it from med withdrawals during a manic episode and lots of it remind me of being hypo. I might enter that for a prewrite and then try to come up with something new to write.

Yeh all the rubbish theyve got out now just means instead of the manual jab youve gotta take care of something else.
Not trying to make a story out of your life but its really helping me with mine, i shall include you in my thanks but yeh if you'd like to include that prewrite then id love to have a look

I know what you mean. I tried the insulin pump and all that (didn't work out so well), so I still prefer plain injections.
I'm glad to help in any way I can. That's really cool that you're writing a book on diabetes.

Like I've said, I've been drunk or high and have had too many blood sugar problems (I know mixing diabetes with the other stuff isn't the best idea, but...).

If I can't come up with a new write and you want me to just tell you about some episodes I've had, feel free to message me. I don't want to annoy you with any ramblings or stories that you don't want to hear

haha i dont think that would happen!
But yeh i think its probably something that hasnt been done from a fiction point of view very often and also it would be awesome to write about having manic episodes, but obviously i know the outline of what can happen with alcohol, like you can have really bad hypos and police mistake you for a drunkie and lock you up for the night and youre in a coma by the time they open it.... but i shall nag you at some weird time when im stuck for a page of writing
And yeh i like the injections but i got my mum sayin if my BSL aint perfect then i might as well have a pump =/
Makes me feel like id be part of a machine though...
And also its great to know theres a girl around my age with type one diabetes with a common interest XD i swear i know no one

I didn't like being attached to something, which is why I've never favored the pump. Plus I had so many problems with it.

I don't think I know any other girls my age with type one diabetes either. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.
There's really no one to talk about it with. My dad has type one diabetes and I know other people that are older than me with it, but it's different for them in ways, you know?

Yeh i dont even know an adult with it, just met some bratty 7 year old once who tried to jab me with capped insulin ... but yeh its different for them and us, also good to know youre diabetic control isnt perfect cause i know mine isnt!

they tried to jab you with capped insulin? what the hell.

My control is no where near perfect. I've been from like 20 something to over 600, not good at all.

    Common Threads

Good luck with some quality entries and there should be plenty. I am going to opt out of this one simply because I'm not in an emotion state that to go that road at the moment. However, I did want to tell you that the most common cause off late onset diabetes is years of heavy drinking as alcohol is nothing more than liquified sugar. Thus, hopefully you will have quality input from folk who have been on both sides of the issue. Anyway, good luck with the contest.
