"Oh, I can smile about it now, but at the time it was terrible."

Extended until I receive 20.... Bear with me. 10/17/09

Write about a time in your life that was horrible yet somehow simultaneously wonderful.
I'm tired of Nostalgic poetry that's filtered through rose colored glasses.
Funny thing, Nostalgia. I can't remember where the heck I got this quote from, but if anybody knows, tell me please.

"Nostalgia is memory without the pain."

Write something along that line please. (but give me BOTH nostalgia and pain!)

The rules...

10 line minimum, 100 line maximum (unless you're delivering serious goods.)

Be somewhat specific, that is- Don't baffle me with 10 layers of abstraction.

NoN3 0v Th1$!!! I won't bother reading.

No sing-song rhyme! Makes me want to puke on a puppy.

No emo cutter nonsense. There are ways to cut deep without ever touching a blade.

No beating me about the head and shoulders with religious sentimentality.

Spell check please. A poorly spelled write takes me out of the moment.

Have fun, dig deep, and write like your life depends upon it!

-Title of contest taken from "Nowhere fast" by The Smiths

Terribly sorry I forgot to check the No Prewrite button. I'm Not going to hold it against the first few people to get through, but for the rest, No prewrites please.
(And please don't be a whinger about it. You're a writer, right?)

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on November 5
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 250, Bronze: 150
  • Final notes:
The top 3 entries sum up the things that I hold most dear about nostalgia... The wild and wonderfully contradictory moments that make up life, presented as such. Many of the entries received were firmly rooted on one side of the fence or the other, in regard to seeing the past through rose colored glasses, or alternately, through gloom and scab picking. I have to say, I really wanted a bit of both, and more, in the writes. Thank you to everyone for entering my contest, and for your patience....

Like the idea of nostalgia without pain... Maybe I'll enter if I come up with something quick enough.

Thank you so much for the trophy, and for hosting this great contest. Congratulations to the other winners, too.
