I am not up to writing just now, and not really feeling like reading much either, but since Mary Travers was a member of my favorite musical group ever, Peter, Paul and Mary, I felt that I really should dedicate a contest to her.
I only just found out that she died, or I would have done it earlier. Rhyme preferred, of course, but any good poem will do, as long as the spelling, grammar and punctuation are appropriate. However, I won't be as picky as I usually am on this. If you loved PP&M as much as I did (and do) then please consider entering.
Points have increased due to a donation from Night Hope of 500 points. (Thanks, Wanda.)
Since there's a reserve, I'm extending this one day in case that person decides to actually do something.

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on October 12
- Rewards: Gold: 900, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 1 people
- Final notes: Sorry I didn't get around to commenting on all the poems. If I feel better tomorrow, I will try to get to them.
I think Mary would have liked the poems entered in this contest. I was looking for something original as well as authentic, and I think most of the poems entered were good and that she would have liked them.
Thanks for entering and I hope to see you again in other contests.

Thank you for hosting this contest, Jim. When I heard the news, I listened to 4 songs that accompanied the article. It was incredible how timeless their voices were/are and the clarity of their message. Good luck to all who enter.
May she rest in the everlasting peace she sought.

Hey. Howya doin'?
Yes, she sought peace, but not only for herself. For everyone. Something we should aspire to.
Thanks for stopping by.

A very nice theme "01"!

Well, it is true ...
that Peter, Paul and Mary were always my favorite singing group, and likely always will be. However, they were also exemplary human beings in and of themselves. It would be hard to find many people I think more of than I do and did of them.

My younger brother really liked them and when I hear their mucic I can't help but think of him and happy hours in our childhood!
-
-
Yes ...
It's sad how many of that generation are falling by the wayside already. -
-
Even more so when I look on "that generation" as big brothers and sisters rather than grampas and gran'mas!

-
Yes ...
they could have certainly been mine since I'm 64 and she was only 72.
And then, if you think of these words:
Bob Dylan's Dream
While riding on a train goin' west,
I fell asleep for to take my rest.
I dreamed a dream that made me sad,
Concerning myself and the first few friends I had.
With half-damp eyes I stared to the room
Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon,
Where we together weathered many a storm,
Laughin' and singin' till the early hours of the morn.
By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung,
Our words were told, our songs were sung,
Where we longed for nothin' and were quite satisfied
Talkin' and a-jokin' about the world outside.
With haunted hearts through the heat and cold,
We never thought we could ever get old.
We thought we could sit forever in fun
But our chances really was a million to one.
As easy it was to tell black from white,
It was all that easy to tell wrong from right.
And our choices were few and the thought never hit
That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split.
How many a year has passed and gone,
And many a gamble has been lost and won,
And many a road taken by many a friend,
And each one I've never seen again.
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,
That we could sit simply in that room again.
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat,
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.

"Just Mercedes" is having a a contest with the prompt writen by the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy...this won't cheer you up but it is pertinent to the conversation...
"Candles"
The days of our future stand in front of us
like a row of little lit candles --
golden, warm, and lively little candles.
The days past remain behind us,
a mournful line of extinguished candles;
the ones nearest are still smoking,
cold candles, melted, and bent.
I do not want to look at them; their form saddens me,
and it saddens me to recall their first light.
I look ahead at my lit candles.
I do not want to turn back, lest I see and shudder
at how fast the dark line lengthens,
at how fast the extinguished candles multiply.
Constantine P. Cavafy (1899)

I remember them in a Royal Variety Performance - where in the presence of the Queen (and looking straight at her) they sang the "Soul Cake Carol" - which had been banned as treasonable at the Reformation, and had never formally been unbanned. The Queen looked taken aback a moment... and then she smiled!
-
Yes ...
they always stood up for what they believed, and nothing, or nobody ever managed to stand in their way for long.
Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you for hosting such a worthy tribute contest, JD. Congrats to all who entered. Be well, Poets and Scribes. This life is far too brief.
