Contest #4 (Quote Prompts)

Hello all.

Like my previous three, for this contest I provide you with a choice of a quote prompt to inspire your poem.

These three are from the novel Enduring Love by Ian McEwan. It's okay if you haven't read or even heard of the novel before, just let the quote inspire you and write something lovely.

#1 "I was afraid of my fear, because I did not yet know the cause."
~Joe; Ian McEwan, Enduring Love.

#2 "Just as last night the rain that drenched you drenched me too and bound us."
~Parry; Ian McEwan, Enduring Love.

#3 "Never deny my reality, because in the end you'll deny yourself."
~Parry; Ian McEwan, Enduring Love.

And of course, the Rules:
1) Do NOT include the quote in your poem.
2) Please put the quote in your Author's Notes to let me see how it inspired you, and credit the author. For example
"I was afraid of my fear, because I did not yet know the cause."
~Ian McEwan, Enduring Love.
3) Do not include a picture with your poem.
4) If your poem is intended for an adult audience only, then label it as such.
5) Nothing to hurt my eyes. This includes:
-shift key abuse
-excess grammatical errors or misspelled words
-clashing backgrounds and font

Terms and Conditions:
~As this is my contest, I reserve the right to add and/or update rules as I see fit.
~I will extend the contest closing date if I do not have enough entries. I am aiming for 15+.
~I will not disqualify without warning, but I WILL tell you if something in your poem goes against my rules, and give you ample opportunity to change it.
~I will post a comment on every poem that is entered, and may or may not include constructive criticism in my comment.
~If you have any questions or concerns about this contest or my rules, please post it as a comment on this page so others can see as well.
~The points will go up as I get more!

Suggestions and Brownie Points:
~Say a lot with few words.
~I like wordplay and imagery of nature.
~If you can write in Japanese, all the power to you! Because I can read it.
~Religious poetry of any type is not in my taste. I also dislike poetry with suicidal or self-harm themes.
~Astound me with your words! You have a better chance of winning if you give me something unlike anything I've ever read before.

For now, that is all. Remember:
~Read the rules carefully.
~This is a community site, so please comment on other entries--it's very encouraging to the writer!
~Have fun!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 2
  • Rewards: Gold: 600, Silver: 300, Bronze: 150, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
Thanks everybody for entering the contest, and congrats to those winners! I'm sorry for leaving it open for so long. I was expecting more entries really, but after lots of reading and deliberation, I decided that I had all the winners I need, and even added some points!
Gold - Not Alone, Being Lonely
I felt this poem's emotional impact the first time I read it and each time thereafter. It means the same thing to me that the quote inspired it does, and has powerful imagery and sentiments to boot.
Silver - Of Unseen Forces And Wandering Eyes
I never fail to be impressed by sonnets, and here is no exception. Also strongly emotional, with a delicate but true-to life subject matter; also quite fitting to the quote that inspired it.
Bronze - From the same seed
Very deep, and definitely thinking outside the box. Better yet, the notion all summed up in very few words. Creative thinking!

    Congrats to all~

And...by chance, who spoke these quotes? I absolutely refuse to enter any contest where the quote being used is without its owner.

    • The first one came from the narrator/main (first-person character), Joe; it wasn't actually spoken in the story. The second two were both spoken by Jed PArry... I'll add that above, momentarily.

  • Thank you for the HM and for hosting
