Here is my cynical take:
Around 1776 some greedy merchants agitated a rebellion against The Crown. The chief reason was unwillingness to pay their fair share of taxes to help pay for The French And Indian Wars. Those conflicts being fought partially on their behalf and from which they did indeed benefit.
