Too Many Dictators Stealing Elections

Actually, one dictator stealing an election is too many, and the mess in Zimbabwe will live in infamy as long as our written history survives. Now we see that the same thing is happening in Iran. A power-crazed madman, backed up by a narrow-minded, old, so-called religious leader, is stealing an election which could effectively end freedom and democracy in Iran, possibly for all time.

I would like to hear what you think about the situation, and hope that you are willing to stand up for those who are being murdered, beaten, and probably tortured because they want to live in a country of free people, rather than a dictatorship.

Usual rules apply. Backgrounds must be green to enter. No profanity, and no attacking any religion in your poems.

Prewrites will be accepted, but MUST BE ON THE THEME. Anything else will be automatically disqualified, no matter how good the poem is.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 7
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
I want to thank each of you for having the nerve to stand up for those who can't readily stand up for themselves. Unfortunately, one of you had no chance at all since he forced me to put him on my block list right off the bat, and I couldn't read his poem or comment on it. I have been ill and possibly didn't comment on all the poems, but I read and reread them a number of times.

Congratulations to the winners and good luck with your writing in the future.

  • Lol, good luck getting entries.

  • Bravo for a contest with meaning

instead of some of the mindless dribble usually in the contests! You are not allowing pre-writes and the background is not green, but hope you will read my poem "Nighttime in Iran"...along the theme of the contest. Thanks, and will look forward to reading the entries you receive.

I've opened this up to prewrites ...

but the backgrounds have to be green, although they can be any shade from very light green to very dark green.

I have a pre-write about Zimbabwe, if you decide to allow them. Well done for highlighting situations like this around the world.

After the contest that I just removed my poetry from, as sad as this whole situation is, your contest is refreshing. It is time we took a stand for something around here. It seems that there is a horde of children on this site that have no idea what Vietnam is/was and certainly have no idea about what's happening in Iran or anywhere but their own little corners of the world. Now, that is not to ever suggest there are young people who do not know what is happening in the world. It just makes me crazy to know that there are children who are aloof to events that will surely affect their lives in a few short years. Sorry to ramble but I just had an occurrence that frustrated the hell out of me. I work with teens so, I assure you not all of them are asinine, misguided lost in the sauce but believe me, there are far too many that are.

So, now that I am off my soapbox I will press pen to parchment and enter a submission here. ~sigh

    Sorry!

  • Hey--

Just me wondering why we in this country--Are so quick to comment in are press and through are politions--On a country ,any country for that matter. That stands up for itself because of a frajulant election? I don't remember seeing one protest in this country. In regards to the Pres. election of 2000. We did littel or nothing while are drewditial system appionted a Pres. to are nation. Wish we were as fast to qiustion are own political system as we are to qeustion another country's---(sorry can't spell)

      Anybody who knows me ...

knows that I had plenty to say about Bush stealing BOTH elections. However, as bad as he was, he didn't have thugs roaming the streets murdering people.

      You know ...

sometimes I wonder about the lack of civic involvement from people here, but occasionally they do seem to pay attention. Perhaps this will be one of those times.
