The Cult of the Tag

Ever go to author pages and see how the same tag has been posted over and over again on guestbooks, yet not your own? How does it make you feel? Like the kid in class who didn't get a Valentine?

Why is that somehow perceived as a nice thing to do, or desirable to get?

I am not talking about individual messages or images posted as a meaningful, personalized greeting to an individual because of some special occasion. I am talking about being left out or leaving out others when you have a classroom of kiddies passing out Valentines.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on June 24
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 500, Bronze: 600, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
The finalists were pretty much impossible to order as they all ripped my heart out in some way. I hope no one is sad not to get a higher colored trophy which is the only reason I hate hosting contests.

Being a dummy, what is a tag on your site ?
And for the contest, can it be a letter or have to be a card ?

Tags are those things you yourself are plagued with - a bear with a message of "The Woods Need More Bears Like You", for example. Then you go around to other pages and you realize this person sent this tag to everybody except you.

You can write your response to this prompt however you want.

  • Maybe I'm a bit naive, perhaps because I never belonged to any clique until high school and the one I belonged to then was called the "lunatic fringe" by its members.

The tags are those pics with slogans on them, right? I get one occasionally and I always like getting them, to be honest. I don't think of them as a sign of belonging or not belonging. But maybe you have a point. I don't think my membership equips me for the sending of tags; the tags remind me of email jokes in a way.

I'm here to write poetry and I don't really feel I belong to a clique (I never learned how) though there are people here I find more interesting than others. Some of the stuff aside from the poetry is fun but I don't really care either way.

You've raised an interesting point and created an unusual contest from it. The whole topic of rejection makes us think.

Due to not knowing what a tag is a must therefore assume that I never get them and must also be eligible to enter a poem....sadly due to ignorance I have not got any feelings on the matter. :-p but I have been a member of the invisible fraternity for most of my life so I can imagine it, maybe I'll be back.

yes, you can generalize the prompt to any way you feel you've been left out - you don't have to know about the cult of the tag. You're better off to be oblivious.

The point value of your prizes fascinates me.
    How much for last place?
Three cheers, and wish there were more...

  • Thank you for the gold trophy and congrats to all who entered.

    • Still thinking about your contest. Should we feel bad about winning if it means someone else has to lose? The thing is, not everyone can be equal or so it seems. I couldn't play dodgeball to save my life (certainly can't play it now) but, when I learned to play squash later on, it felt great. Never won a game but I remember feeling great when I would win a game called Balderdash, which involved making up word meanings. Everyone's good at something (I would hope) and it does feel good to win. Maybe everyone should be equal but we are not.

Not critisizing. I just think it's an interesting thing to think about.
