A Lord of the Rings Promt-Contest...

Soooo, its been almost 10 years since I read Tolkiens terrific triology now, and time is ripening for a re-read, as Im finding myself forgetting extremely important details, like the number of cheesecakes in Bilbo's storeroom-cellar.

So in that occasion, lucky friends and foes, Im going to give you an opportunity like no other.. it might resemble similar opportunities you have had, but I promise you it wont be exactly the same. Given that, that would be to much of an coincidence. Not that coincidences dont happen, but either way...

This Competition *will* require you to have read the first book in the series "The
Fellowship of the Ring" Less you are a psychic who can mysteriously *tap* into whichever book you would like to without even reading it. (In which case you might at some point of your life end up in conflict with the copyright authorities... So if I where you, better keep silent of this *gift*)

What I want you do is this:
Write a promt inspired by one of the chapters from "The Fellowship of the Ring", You will have focus your poem mainly around that chapter, though you are off course allowed to use bits of the other chapters, as in honor of your artistic freedom. Note: "bits"

Remember to put your promt in your Author Notes. Just write about the chapter that inspires you the most, it dosent matter if others have written about it before you. (I somehow feel that Im going to regret having said that when I end up with 25 Concerning Hobbits Ballads, but oh well.)

Style can be any, though a rhyme would surely be neat, if your good at it :-)

The Chapters:

Book 1.
0 -Concerning Hobbits (It isent really a chapter, but Ill let you write about it anyway)
I -A Long Expected Party
II -The Shadow of the Past
III -Three Is Company
IV -A Shortcut to Mushrooms
V -A Conspiracy Unmasked
VI -The Old Forest
VII -In the House of Tom Bombadil
VIII -Fog on the Barrow-Downs
IX -At the Sign of the Prancing Pony
X -Strider
XI -A Knife in the Dark
XII -Flight to the Ford

Book 2.
I -Many Meetings
II -The Council of Elrond
III -The Ring Goes South
IV -A Journey in the Dark
V -The Bridge of Khazad-dűm
VI -Lothlórien
VII -The Mirror of Galadriel
VIII -Farewell to Lórien
IX -The Great River
X -The Breaking of the Fellowship

Rules.
I. No Erotica!!
II. Have fun!

You can reserve, but thou must complete withinn 3 days, not to be turned into a frog by that funny looking lady. (And yes, she really will, its what she lives for...)

Also, this is my first contest, so if I do anything wrong dont cut my head of right away.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 4
  • Rewards: Gold: 300, Silver: 200, Bronze: 100, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
Alas, so our contest have finally come to an end. And while we might not have been a party of nine (or twenty-five), four is a decent enough number aswell, Id say.

Atleast all of the entries where ranging from good to veryvery good, so I can honestly say Im glad that everybody is getting rewards. Your poetry was my pleasure to read, and I would hope to see you for my next contest, whenever it might take place.

Congratulations to the winners, Tolkien would be proud of you :-)

Thank you. I feel sure that Tolkien's genius will inspire many to join, at the end of this contest I will have poets begging me to open more entry slots, the historical waters of AP will overflood!

(A little grandeur is allowed for the artist, yes?)

  • What a great contest! I will try to write. I have read the entire trilogy at least 10 times since college. I am about due for another reading this summer. As far as I am concerned, the trilogy is the best novel written in the 20th century - imho!

Im trying to keep this contest open a little longer, untill I get atleast one more entry. The contest will be unjudgeable otherwise, given that it requires me atleast three entries to judge... Im really sorry for this, and hope it isent of to much of an inconvenience. Thanks to the two of you who's participated so far :-)

  • I feel bad about this, I have started a poem about Tom Bombadil about six times since you posted the contest and it just won't come out right

    I have a poem ...

already written on the birthday party. I hope you open this to prewrites.

I'm rereading the series now, but since I no longer have the books in English, I'm reading them in French, and many names are different. Also, I'm not really feeling up to writing much just now.

Anyway, I do hope you decide to allow prewrites.

Arh, thats a pity. The only reason I really closed this for prewrites was that I was ignorant enough to asume that no one would have written a poem about this. However as Im going on vacation today, to some island where finding a internet connection would be a mere drop of chance, I dont really feel as if I could prolong this contest any furtherly. I would be very interested to read and comment on your poem though, so if you could send me a link, it'll be joy. :-)

If I decide to do a contest similar to this one at some point, Ill shall definitively send you a note of it.

  • AWWWWWW

I love the lord of the rings. Sadly I have only seen the movie 10 million times literally. Maybe you can have another one of these, since I am back into an inspired state of mind and I will go get the book asap.
Great idea. Frodo is the strongest and the weakest some how. I'll be back to read every last one of these.

Hmm, I might do another one of these, though it would properly be as an underoption in some great vivid volumious promt contest. Ill send you a poke, if so.

  • Closes in ten minutes. Shucks!

  • Many thanks for the silver, Mayik, and congratulations to everyone who entered. I am shocked you didn't receive a lot more entries. Enjoyed this one very much, and it's inspired me to start working on a list for more Tolkien and Fantasy poems
