Praising Pablo

This is a contest to celebrate the life and poetry of one of the best poets of the 20th century, 1971 Noble Prize winner Pablo Neruda.

Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basoalto was born in Chile 105 years ago on 12th July 1904 and started writing poetry ten years later. In his early days he used the pseudonym of Pablo Neruda but in his forties he adopted the name legally and that is how he is known and loved by readers all over the world.

What we would like is one of the following:-

Option 1 - Parody
Choose one of the many poems by Neruda and write a parody of it.

Don't forget to put the details of the original in your Poem Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Option 2 – Cento
Using lines taken from a variety of Neruda’s own poems compose a poem of your own (at least 12 lines) on one of the following themes.
A Society
B Beauty
C Conflict
D Tribute
Please list the poems you've drawn from in your Poem Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Option 3 – Style
Choose one of Neruda's poems and write a poem of your own in the style Neruda used.
Don't forget to put the details of the original in your Poem Notes

+++++++++++++++++
Option 4 - Tribute
Write a tribute poem for Neruda, preferably in a style he would have used.

RULES

1. No sticky caps or text-talk. After all Neruda did not use them himself.
2. Please give proper credit to any original work by Neruda that you used for your poem.
3. Please indicate the option you have chosen in your Poem Notes
4. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO HELP OUT WITH THE JUDGING AT THE END OF THE COMPETITION BY PICKING YOUR OWN TOP 3 POEMS. PLEASE REPLY WITHIN A WEEK OR BE DISQUALIFIED.

JUDGING

At the end of the competition [31st June] each participant will be asked to nominate his or her top 3 poems (excluding their own).
First choices will receive 3 points, second 2 and third 1.
Points for each poem will be added together and the top 3 poems will be the winners.
In the event of a tie Allpoetry member Legend will be asked to decide the winner.

REWARDS
FIRST PRIZE 750 Points and a Gold Trophy
SECOND PRIZE 500 Points and a Silver Trophy
THIRD PRIZE 250 Points and a Bronze Trophy.

Upto 3 Honourable mentions may be awarded a bonus of 30 points each.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on July 12
  • Rewards: Gold: 750, Silver: 500, Bronze: 250
  • Final notes:
    Thank you all for your patience with this. The automatic system for contacting all entrants did not work and so it seems no one got my triple reminders to vote but as the majority of you submitted votes anyway as per the rules we have decided to use those we recieved.
    The quality was high and the voting close so, with Legends agreement, we shall be giving points for a 4th place as well.

    Gold Never You (fragment)
    Silver The Obliged Writer
    Bronze Slow Dance with Neruda
    Pewter Your Smile

    Thank you all for entering and be on the lookout for the next competition in a few days time.

    Pablo Neruda is a poet that many in this site identify with. I'm sure this contest will be getting wonderful entries

  • Old poetry

    Am withdrawing my entry here for this contest.
    Reason being, there is at least one entrant who is a member ofthe Old Poetry team, and anonymous or not, that does not set well with me.
    Secondly, I feel it is not the time or place for entrants to laud the genius of the judges for initiating this contest as is taking place in the comments of this contest, again, anonymous or not.
    I just get the feeling that I'm beginning at a deficit with these two factors in situ as it were.
    Thanks anyway.
    John Johnson

    • I take it that your referencing an old poetry member meant me. Firstly all I do for the Old Poetry site is look into information about some poets who are not listed on the site for whatever I can find that may allow their inclusion. Secondly this was an open contest to the entire AP public to pay tribute to Neruda having inspired us to write - I am sorry but I do not necessarily see any conflict, apologies that it made you feel uncomfortable but it didn't warrant you removing your entry, it had just as much chance as anyone else to win. To have been inspired is reward in itself and that is what I come here for, not trinkets.

  • Re Participant Nominations

    "...each participant will be asked to nominate his or her top 3 poems (excluding their own).
    First choices will receive 3 points, second 2 and third 1..."

    Forgive obtuseness. This is the first time I've encountered participant judging.Do I just use the "Add to finalist's list" button on the poem page? first time = first place, etc?

    Is this correct?

    btw...
    Best wishes to each contestant!

    Viva la Neruda!

    • having entered one of these contests before all you have to do is send a private message to one of the judges listed with your top 3 selections and they'll ask you to confirm those selections.

    My thanks to Jim and Legend, to all of the voters and entries, for the honor, so many readers and warm comments; consensus judging can be difficult at best and here we had technical problems. It was a privilege to read these voices of Neruda here on AP, i am sure there are many more, but i don't expect to find any better than these brilliant entries i have read here, in this contest...PK

    when was the notice sent to ask us to give our three favorites? also my poem readscommented on by the Judge, but the only comment I got was that the judge was not comenting, perhaps these are clear to those who have entered your contests before , but for writers newest tp ap the rules were not clear, thank you for giving me a chance to know Neruda's more from a new angle,

      First I am sorry if things went askew Annie and thank you for the positive ending to your message.
      To answer your points
      Notice was given of voting with the rules.
      A note was sent by automatic link when the contest was closed at the begining of the month, a second note was sent about a week after and a third two days later. It now seems (as stated in the judging note) that the automatic link was malfunctioning and this has been reported to the OP Mods.
      You recieved a message that one organiser(who was also the judge in case of a tie) had READ your poem during the contest but would refrain from commenting until all entries were in. Another organiser (I-like-rhymes) read and commented before the votes were counted. A third organiser (oldpoetry) is a group identity and at least one of the group read your poem even if no seperate comment was made. The real judges were the 15 other entrants. The "read by judge" note is automatic and should be "read by organisers" for this sort of contest but that is too cumbersome for Kevin to arrange.
      The clarity of the rules does seem OK to me naturally, but anyone who wished could have messaged one of the organisers for clarification.
      On a positive note. this is the fourth contest of this type I have organised this year and I do try to improve things as I go on. The fifth is coming soon and hopefully will be better.
      Thanks for your entry
      Jim
