Eating Disorders - Mondays in April Official Contest May 2009

This is a contest intended for poets with eating disorders of any sort. Anorexia, bulimia, COE, ED-NOS, whatever you know about, write about it. Here are the sub-topics from which I'd like you to choose--you can definitely choose more than one if you wish, but it's best to stick to one main idea.

Describe one (or more) of the following:

-what your struggle is like
-the things you revel in (control, secrecy, weight loss, etc.)
-the things that trigger you (people, places, memories, songs, smells)
-dealing with doctors, psychiatrists, so-called "professionals" who really don't seem to understand what eating disorders are about (i.e. they say you're "not thin enough" to have one, they say they "covet your willpower," they genuinely think it can all be cured by "just eating something," etc.)
-dealing with friends and family who don't see the extent of your struggles or desires--or how they may have contributed

Prompts (no prewrites):

-Picture prompt. (Reserve a spot and put "picture prompt" as the title; I'll comment with a link to my chosen picture.)
-Quote prompt. (Reserve a spot and put "quote prompt" as the title; I'll comment with the quote I want you to use.)
-Song prompt (Same as above, but with "song prompt")

IMPORTANT RULES: READ THESE BEFORE ENTERING!!!

  • By entering my contest, you’re agreeing to have your work linked to (with FULL CREDIT) on my web site, Mondays in April. This is a site for those with eating disorders who are not ready for recovery. If you are offended by the site or its messages, please don't enter this contest. (And don't give me any shit, either. Thanks.)
  • You can enter prewritten poetry if you like, but only if it has not previously placed (gotten a trophy of any sort) in a contest at AP, including one of mine.
  • If you don’t place in this month's contest, you may re-enter the next one, but it must be with a different (or HEAVILY revised) poem.
  • If you place in one of my contests, you may be asked to enter special invite-only contests later, where I’ll raise the bar and challenge you. You’re under no obligation to do it, but I’d prefer you enter those rather than the “regular” ones, so as to give other poets a chance to place in the "regular" ones.
  • This should be a given, but your poem should have SOMETHING to do with eating disorders. That is, you should know what you’re talking about. I can tell if you don't.
  • You SHOULD take my critiques into consideration, because I will give each entry a thoughtful critique; that’s why I only take 20 poems (limit 1 per poet) at a time. I want you to edit them, discuss them, and make them the best they can be.
  • I (April) reserve the right to disqualify anyone, at any time, for any reason. I also reserve the right to modify these rules at any time, for any reason. I also reserve the right to block users for any reason without explanation...but I really hope I don’t have to do that.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on June 10
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 50, Bronze: 25
  • Final notes:
Well done, my friends, well done! I thank you all wholeheartedly for dedicating your time, talent, energy, and emotion to this contest. These are weighty topics we're dealing with here, and I definitely could feel the pain of your personal struggles, individualized and yet so relative to so many of us, through each verse of your work. Ultimately, I chose the winning poems based on their uniqueness in getting across the same points. I also have to say that, if AP allowed me to give a "Most Improved" award, it would go to kareneisenlord--if you ever want to see an example of the way I want people to edit their work, take a look at her poem and the changes she made; she left up the original and the revised editions. So kudos to her, and to all of the winners; I'll be featuring you on Mondays in April in a day or so. If you didn't place in this contest, I'll be putting up the June edition by this weekend, so feel free to enter with a different poem. And for those of you entering Ilma's ED contest, best of luck there too. Much love and light,
    <3 ARS
