Actually a poetry slam is a competition where the audience rates performing poets on a score of 1 -10, Olympics-style. An open mic is an open mic. I should know: I've been on Team Orlando for the last four years at the National Poetry Slam. (More details on my allpoetry homepage.)

Not to be a dick, but slam poets get super offended when promoters tag the word "slam" to their poetry events just to seem cool, marketable, new age, et cetera. It leads to stereotypes regarding what slam poetry is "supposed to be" (Hip-Hop-influenced, sounding wholly like the poets on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, et cetera) from people completely unfamilair with the genre.

This is one of the best ideas for a contest I've ever seen. Hm, it gives me an idea. To hold an actual slam contest. Also, slam poetry is a type of poetry. I added my slam poem. It's the way you speak the poem that makes it slam poetry. Taylor Mali is a huge slam poet. Anyways, this is a really good contest idea.
