I have a short story in my journal titled, Welcome to Hell! It is about the Russians launching a surprise attack on Anchorage, Alaska. Without giving away too much of the plot, I can tell you here that the Americans win.
Imagine that the fighting is over and the local newspaper is offering $10,000 for the best poem commemorating the Alaskan's victory. Write a poem as if you were going to submit it to this newspaper contest.
I won't give you $10,000, but I will give you 1000 All Poetry points!
The finalists are:
Palin Saves the Day!
Frozen War
Liberty
Guillotine
Of these, only the authors of Palin Saves the Day and Frozen War appear to have read my story all the way through. Frozen War is a good poem but, unfortunately, it did not exactly meet my specifications. I said to write your poem as if you were going to submit it to a newspaper contest and Frozen War mentions events witnessed by only Susan and her husband, namely that the two of them lured the Russians into shooting at each other. The last stanza wouldn't entirely make sense to the typical newspaper reader.
Thus, first prize goes to the author of Palin Saves the Day!
But, of the remaining three, which one gets the 500-point silver? This is a VERY difficult decision. They are all good!
Experience has taught me that the best way to handle difficult decisions is to put them off. So I am going to give the remaining three finalists until next Teusday to make any changes that they think might help. Basically, I am looking for more detail about the fighting in Anchorage, but only details that everybody in the city witnessed.
Good luck!
