For Philip Jose Farmer and all the great sci-fi writers who've passed on.

Several days ago, Philip Jose Farmer died at the age of 91. He was one of the greats of science fiction, and his Riverworld series is the equal of any sci-fi series ever written, at least in my opinion . Here's a link to his homepage:

http://www.pjfarmer.com/

and his Wikipedia page:

I'd like to see some poems about him or his writing. If you have a favorite sci-fi writer that you'd rather write about, you can let me know and maybe I will consider him or her as well.

No profanity, or off color writing unless it's essential to the poem. I do not want to see prose. If you write free verse, be sure it's actually poetry.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are important as per usual. This will likely be a limited entry contest, so you can reserve if you wish. I won't close it until I have at least ten entries, if it takes all year.

Good luck with your writing.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on August 5
  • Rewards: Gold: 800, Silver: 100, Bronze: 50, Honorable mention: 3 people
  • Final notes:
I've decided to close this contest since I'm not getting any entries now. It's a shame that so many here are only interested in pathetic, gooey love poems, lost love poems, or poems about cutting somebody's wrist.

If I don't get more entries in my remaining contests, I will probably quit having them altogether.

    Thanks to those who entered.

I have not read any of this man's works, and I would feel bad making something up. I am a large fan of scifi, especially Gene Wolfe's works (who is about as old, perhaps, though still alive). I would like to write inspired by him.

      Sorry ...

but the contest is for sci-fi writers who have passed on ONLY. If I allowed that, someone else would ask for something else, and who knows what from there.

There are bunches of them who've died - Robert Heinlein, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and lots of others. Surely, if you are really a sci-fi fan, you can find someone to write about.

Please keep contest open as you stated

As you approved my proposed author, Issac Asimov. I am doing research on him now to get a better detailed background for my piece. I want to do old "Purple" justice, after all.

awesome idea for a contest. I only wish I wasn't currently having a writer's block. I am fascinated with the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. He, too, recently passed on before finishing the last book in the series. I hope the writer they chose to finish it will do it justice. I have a poem I wrote about the Wheel of Time, but I sadly do not have time to query you about it before this contest ends. Excellent idea. I am sorry you had no more entries. Blessings, Myth

      Ah ...

      you didn't read the rules.

I said I would keep the contest open until I got ten entries.

  • I used to play the GURPS "Riverworld" module, back when i still did RPGs. I loved the idea of having a character from any time in earth's history.

Thank you for this contest and for the Bronze. I wish I could have done a better job honoring Asimov. I feel like an epic condensed into a few sonnets might have done it properly. Alas, I do not have the capacity at this time to accomplish such a feat, so I wrote what I could.

Thanks again for honoring our past masters.
