How much courage do you have--Part 2

A sister (poor cousin) contest to How much courage do you have?

Hi from JustADutchie and myself, many rhyming poets sneer at free verse, but believe me good free verse is not as easy as you think.

So this contest is for those of you who NEVER or hardly ever write in free verse, the challenge is to write a poem with without rhyme and meter. Any subject.

We hope to see some of the greats of rhyme-and-meter here in this contest. CricketJeff, Legend, Epistomolus, Peripatetic, etc.... that means you!

There is no free verse help at the right of the page where you add a poem to submit and don't think of using rhymezone.

If there are not at least 10 entries, this contest will be deleted.

(Thank you and a group hug to JustADutchie, PaperParadox and CricketJeff for point donations!)

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on February 19
  • Rewards: Gold: 4500, Silver: 2000, Bronze: 500
  • Final notes:
Well, that was fun. I thank Cannonsfire for insights into the nebulous realm of free verse... the judging couldn't have been carried out knowledgably without her perspective... For most of you, it seemed as if the rhymer's method carried over into your free verse work. Once in the mechanistic groove it is difficult to detach completely from the rigid structures which make rhyme so catchy.

Apologies for not awarding any HMs... the site is quite aflood with HM's... I think they're a nuisance. Anyone who entered a poem but did not place in the conventional winner's circle who wants 30 points, IM me and I'll send them your way!

Woops, sorry! I posed the question and said I ~would~ do it except I was low on points. When JustADutchie sent me 1500 points, I sorta had to put my money where my mouth was!

To my mind, free verse is the hardest of all poetic forms.

Rhyming is a doddle, meter is breathing, FV hurts!!!

I will try to lassoo my muse and then hobble and blinker it and hitch it to my FV wagon, I think I know where I left the wheels ...

We were looking for poets with at least a "rhyme 4, free verse 1" ratio. You're giving us 1 in 150!!! Not bad! You qualify in spades. How do you begin? Guessing: Read some Nicolette and Cannonsfire to get some idea how to start, how to phrase and how to finish!

I was wondering if you were planning on rereading all the poems before judging? I've been editing a bit as I go along, and wanted to make sure you give it another peak (hopefully it's less dreadful after a few edits.)

LOL! I haven't read but one or two so far... er, maybe three. Cannonsfire, my co-judge, has probably been reading a lot of them and the system updates regardless of whether she or I read it. Hopefully you'll send her an inquiry as well! I always wait til after the contest closes to go through them one after the other. You're safe with me anyway! For the record, I've never had a co-judge in one of my contests before, sort of a first for me, although I was asked to co-judge other contests twice.

I think that as co-judge she probably see the comments posted on the bottom of the contest page. It's definitely been interesting seeing others whose poetry is almost exclusively rhyming, working out a free verse poem. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one sticking my pinkie toe into these icy waters of free verse.

    Congrats to the winners.
