Happy Christmas and New Year to the Dead of Gaza

Israeli airstrikes have killed more than 1250 Palestinians and continued unabated for three whole weeks, showering death upon families living in slums. Israeli "defence minister" (this actually means aggressive murderer) Ehud Barak has promised a "war to the bitter end" to defeat the militant Hamas group which controls the Gaza Strip, a pathetic collection of shanties, whose dwellers are being semi-starved by Israeli blockades. The current ceasefire is only because Israel has lost the balls to continue (and also Obama is on the way).

The United Nations and the European Union have condemned Israel's actions.
But the US, the most influential power-broker in the Middle East conflict, has refused to call for an Israeli ceasefire, instead placing the onus on Hamas to end cross-border rocket attacks against southern Israel. Indeed the US "ambassador" to the UN recently vetoed a ceasefire call, in order to give the Israelis a bit of extra killing time. Makes you sick, doesn't it?

The UK Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, has expressed "grave concern" about the situation in Gaza and has called for an immediate ceasefire. An EU meeting, to be chaired by French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner, will explore ways of easing the crisis in tandem with the rest of the international community.

Downing Street said it was "appalled" at the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip after a third day of Israeli air strikes against the Palestinian enclave. The US, on the other hand, couldn't give a shit.

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been pressing his Israeli counterpart Ehud Olmert to ensure access for humanitarian teams, but has not condemned the slaughter. US President Bush has sat on his hands and kept his mouth shut, his final act of indifference to humanity's suffering. Sadly Obama has lept his mouth zipped as well, so much for a brave new world.

The devastation caused by the strikes has overwhelmed hospitals and exacerbated shortages of fuel, food and medicines in Gaza. Palestinian officials said their death toll stood at 364, with another 1,400 reported wounded. Many children have died, including 4 sisters under 16, blasted to pieces because they unwisely lived too near a mosque the Israelis regarded as a legitimate war target for their bombing. By way of contrast, only four Israelis have been killed by Palestinian rocket fire since Saturday.

I think you could write me a nice little poem about this disgusting situation in which the US does nothing except give the Israeli murderers a free hand and the EU (and this includes Britain) mouths empty platitudes.

What a lovely New Year we have to look forward to.

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on January 23
  • Rewards: Gold: 400, Honorable mention: 2 people
  • Final notes:
A lot of good entries here so Edna had to dig into the Edna Bank for some honourable mentions. I was particularly entranced by the person who entered a poem which was pro-Israeli. I wonder how he misunderstood the title of the contest, "Happy Christmas and New Year to the Dead of Gaza"??

    Please

the disgusting situation is that the nation of Israel PURCHASED it's territory after world war 2 as a place of refuge from future attempts at exterminating their race. Since the time of the purchase, terrorists have fomented hate against their race and demanded their extermination. Palestine had for over thirty years refused to become a nation after the end of world war two and often targeted civilians (like Olympians in Munich) and killed them in protest to Israels "Occupation" of lands won in their first war of DEFENSE against aggressions soon after they established their homeland. These attacks are a response to the MORTARING of CIVILIAN targets across the border from Gaza into Israel by a militant faction that fought off the recognized government of the region and took Gaza as it's own. THESE ARE CRIMINAL TARGETS strategically selected by unmanned drones showing targeting systems WHERE THE WEAPONS AND LEADERS of this criminal group are located.

PLEASE fact check. The murderers are being controlled by Israeli aircraft.

I don't want to enter the New Year contemplating the implications of another war in the middle east, or worse, but before I choose any side (which I haven't) I definitely want to know why I have to choose sides first, and it has to be the truth.

fact check: Purchased as much land as possible over decades under Ottoman and British law, then partition by UN, the rest as spoils of war in 1948 and 1967.

        Still

Purchased, not taken at gunpoint. Even the Gaza strip itself was wrested from the Palestinian governments control by Hamas, if one can believe anything that's in the news anymore. There are two sides to every story though, and ignoring the fact that mortars were fired on civilians for months before the airstrikes, then painting the Israelis as murderers? Well, it just seems like an unnacceptable whitewash to me of previous hostility...as if there were no reason for the strikes at all. Bad form, that's all. Like I said, I haven't taken sides...but the slant here is obvious.

      You fact check

Civillians, children, and a university are NOT military targets.
HINT, what you see on the Fox is not news, but propaganda...

I don't watch FOX news. I don't watch the news at all. The university was reportedly a Hamas training center. BY THE WAY - I read just this morning that "university" students in Iran are begging the government there to approve suicide bombers. Now that's higher education huh? Enough, anything can be argued without resolution, and I'm not interested in changing anyone's mind about anything. HINT - people will believe whatever they want to regardless of what the truth may be. Hatred is hatred, war is war, and usually the two are inseparable over time. FACT there has always been hatred in the world race against race, and there always will be. "We didn't start the fire" - Billy Joel It's amazing to me that anyone can ignore the fact that Israel has been mortared for months, attacked for years by suicide murderers that everyone seems to accept as neutral, and that the vast majority of actions taken by Israel's enemies have been taken against INNOCENT CIVILIANS who have had a bulls eye painted on their heads for media attention by terrorist organizations. No no...we must not be outraged that these same militants won't evacuate their own innocents from military sites, but we HAVE to be outraged when they are killed. I'm sorry, I believe heaven holds judgment for those animals who kill innocents either intentionally or by their own neglect, and I believe hell has a special place for those who approve of such behavior. I DO NOT believe there is any judgment for military men under orders who kill innocents by accident when by attacking military targets, they are defending more innocents against this kind of barbarism...the responsibility for evacuation lies with the military commander taking possession of the site used for military purposes. The innocent blood is on his head ALONE. Put guns and soldiers in a mosque, don't whine because a mosque got blown to pieces...that's all. Use a university to train students to make bombs and groom soldiers for combat...don't be surprised if you can't teach there during a war.

This is offensive, stupid ignorant bollocks. Following that logic the Nazi SonderKommando were just doing their duty. In my opinion, the only good soldier is a dead soldier. Especially an Israeli one.

I think we have to remember that this is war, not attack; even though the Iraelis are pretty much in the wrong, the Palestinians have killed too.

'In any conflict between peoples, there is a time for balancing the books, for placing facts neatly in the debit and credit columns, for issuing measured statements about the rights and wrongs on both sides. But not in the midst of one-sided carnage. The only decent thing to feel at the present time is outrage. The only thing for decent people to do right now is to condemn, without reserve or qualification, the brutal campaign that the Israeli military is waging against the population of Gaza. My question would be, where are all the protesters when Hamas bombeds civilian areas and refused to continue the cease fire? There was no outcry from the press or the protesters.

Nothing but silence for months of rocketing and mortaring, barely a second story after any nightclub bombing, for the forty some odd years I have been alive I have been hearing and reading of suicide murders within the borders of Israel and kidnappings and murders all around the globe by these groups, and still nothing...one attack to eliminate the source of the problem with SMART BOMBS laser guided like in Iraq and Afghanistan at principally MILITARY targets, and all we hear is OH MY GOD, THE CIVILIANS!!!!!! Let's see, Eight? Twenty? Fifty? How many civilians died during the rocket attacks over the last few months? What? You didn't know that they happened for months? hm....

        None, until yesterday

as far as the recent rocket attacks they used to excuse the current genocide.
        You see, we do hear.
If I get some homeless person to sell me the United States for ten dollars, does it mean I own the U.S? Nope.

If you were a purple guy, who believed some other purple guy was god, and you, the chosen, persecuted and displaced by, say, the Spanish, and England and Russia, in all their generosity, gave you Wisconsin, I would fight you with mortars, bombs, boxcutters, or, if need be, my teeth, to take back my home. The only place the allies could have rightfully given the Jews was Germany.

None? Really? Imagine that. Months of rocket fire and NO casualties? I guess it's ok then, you're right, Israel is wrong. (and I have ocean front property in Arkansas I'd like to sell you)...

The allies were wrong when they came up with their resolution. (Let's say nothing about how they let Russia keep most of the countries they rolled through as they approached Berlin). By the way if they gave Israel Germany, what would happen to the Germans? Much the same thing, only more intensified.

The fact is that the land was PURCHASED, not stolen.

I dare say that if I mortared Wisconsin you'd also call on the Army National Guard to put an end to it as soon as the first impact happened, regardless whose it was.

          However

If your father sold me your farm or house and you then came at me with a box cutter, on what would then be my property, I would have you arrested and thrown in jail. If you persisted, I would examine self defense law in that region and exercise whatever rights I had as a citizen to force you to stop. If you hid behind your children while aiming a rifle at me, it would be YOUR fault if they got shot while I defended myself, same as if you hid behind your car.

The fact that the press is manipulating the information so that people weep for these oppressed civilians instead of growing outraged at their tyrant leaders who force them to exist this way is insulting to one's intelligence.

The fact that somehow Americans view of their own country and leadership is affected by civilian casualties over in Palestine is an amazing feat of brainwashing in my eyes...simply amazing.

Nothing purple about any of that.

    bull shit

as long as hammas launches and hides from civilian areas they are putting the palistine people in danger it is unreasonable to allow missles and suicide bombers to threaten a nations security and ability to exist without some retaliation. would you stand by and let me come to your house and kill your family and then not respond.
to call isralies murders is wrong and you are an ass for even putting that thought in print,,what about the palistinan population give up hammas and live in peace with israil?

You are talking illiterate rubbish. It is the Palestinians who have stood by and watched the Israeli murderers slaughter their children - over 500 murdered in 3 weeks. How you can attempt to excuse the evil done by Israel makes me want to throw up. All decent people condemn the Israeli fascists. I personally would welcome the removal of the illegal state of Israel from all maps and would favour their leaders being tried as war criminals before being hanged for mass murder.

        • 1500 dead actually. God will never forgive the Israelis - first they killed Jesus and now they are killing harmless Pallies.

into practice it's called genocide plus annexation and from
South Africa Apartheid.Despite being armed with all the most
modern weapons per U.S. tax payers and destroying half of
The Lebanon they still got a bloody nose from Hezbolla who were relatively poorly armed.Propoganda they learnt

what about everyone thats died in israel? what about the innocent children and people who lain burning? You're going to get evil people on both sides of the line. The media only started to show this story after Israel retaliated, no where does it say that it was because israel was under attack, home made rockets were being fired into israel from across the border. Israel Have been attacked and scrutanised since it was a nation. They have been bombed and killed. My deepest sympathies goes to the innocent victims of gaza and I wish theyre lives had been spared but people cannot ignore the fact that what israel are doing is what any other fucking country would do after being attacked.
People are expecting Israel to flop on it's back and let itself be wiped out. Fuck that, they have every right to protect themselves. It's like a fashion statement now to say ''I hate israel'' well fuck that. I love israel, i've been there, and despite the damage that has been done to it's buildings and it's streets, it is beautiful. This is not an attack on you, this is my opinion which I am entitled to just as you are to yours. So if you're going to reply to me aggresively you neednt bother as I wont be replying.
''Hamas lobs hundreds of rockets at Israel, aimed at anyone and everyone...
Hamas recruits, trains, and deploys suicide bombers to buses, cafes, hotels, etc., inside Israel
Hamas is dubbed as a terrorist organization by every reputable country in the world...
Hamas, knowing that Israel is targeting locations where their rockets are being fired from, eye witnesses say militants set-up and fired rockets in close proximity to the UN school...
Hamas stores weapons in area Mosques that are friendly to their cause...
Yet, from what I'm reading from several of these posters, I'm to believe that ISRAEL is wrong? I agree, the loss of innocent children is horrendous, but what is the responsibility of the Palestinians that ELECTED Hamas? Isn't this what they wanted when they ousted Fatah?
Hamas has made the bed for the Palestinians, not Israel...
Hamas has brought this suffering on tho their people, not Israel...and enough about the "embargo"...both Egypt and Israel would be willing to lift the embargo if Hamas would drop their militant ways...but they have refused.''

Evil will always exist in this world, it's the people that want to stop it that are the heroes, not the people who want to pick sides, they're adding to the problem, they're adding to the fight.
Ignorance is not always bliss, ignorance can be murder.

    Hello

If I were a bank robber and came out of the bank holding a 10 year old girl in front of me as a shield, you would call that cowardice of the gravest sort, yet these guys are launching missiles at Israel from amidst the palestinian population. But they KNEW Israel would retaliate, making them, hamas, far worse ilk than that bank robber!

If I were an Israeli solder and came into Gaza and saw an innocent civilian holding a 2 year old child in front of me, I would shooot her in the back. And that's what an Israeli soldier did a couple of days ago. On the other hand, if I were a human being, I would kill myself out of shame. Your typing is as bad as your morals. You know nothing.

Those people in the Middle East have fought for centuries over the same subject. It is their culture and way of life. This is how they fight and it is very ugly and inhumane, they still fight like it is like the 1600's which is quite barbaric. Though, I do understand your emotions for this contest, I have to stand UP for the US for they have their own problems for now and a new leader is swearing in soon. If the US sticks their nose in, they are told to leave and criticized for it. If they do NOT, then they are still criticized for it. Seems the US can do no right, yet when the world needs something done, who does the world look to? Answer: US of A

The US has tried to change the Iraqi people and help them. But as you can see, it has not worked for it is their culture, their way of life. AND, they are afraid to stand up for their rights, afraid of being shot.

We can all sit inside our warm comfy houses criticizing the world, but how many wish to travel to that place and help them first hand since soldiers seem to be worthless only if they are DEAD. So who shall go help? Civilians?

I suppose I will be pounced on now by every poet on here now, but I have an opinion too whether you like it or not.
