Such is Life

“SUCH IS LIFE!”

The title of this contest is taken from the last words reported to have been spoken by the Irish-Australian activist and bushranger, Ned Kelly, just before he was hanged at Melbourne gaol on November 11, 1880.

We are looking for poems about what the words mean to you personally. There is plenty of scope for different interpretations of the prompt, but we want to be able to tell that the words were used as the genesis of the poem and that you thought about them carefully.

Rules:

No dirty-pretty.

No sticky caps.

We want to see people take care with spelling, grammar and presentation.

Left aligned.

No limit on length, but don’t turn it into War and Peace. (Or a limit?)

New poem only. No prewrites.

We, the judges, will look favourably on entries that WE think are well written and thoughtful. Originality and freshness are encouraged.

Good Luck to all. We look forward to some wonderful entries!

Contest is Over

  • Contest was judged on December 3, 2008
  • Rewards: Gold: 2500, Silver: 1000, Bronze: 500, Honorable mention: 1 people
  • Final notes:
Thank you all for your wonderful entries in the contest. We were both astonished, not only by the number, but also by the standard of entries.

I would not advise co-judging a contest. We almost had a falling-out over third place.

It's a pity there are not more trophies; every entry in the prelim finals deserves one. I added one HM to try to make up for the judge's disagreement. I hope you've all read each other's works by now - truly, an outpouring of talented work about the mystery that is life.

He was shot in the shoot-out at Glenrowan, and although badly injured (broken arm, leg and ankle from bullet wounds) and treated with barbarity by the police he survived and was able to walk to the scaffold.
