To celebrate the feast of St Hilda (17 November), this is an ultra-quick - i.e. one day competition for "PREVIEOUSLY WRITTEN" POEMS ONLY.
The subject is "poetry and/or poets"
Any style, any length.
Enter as many times as you like...
provided all entries are "Previously written"...
PLEASE ensure poems are legible - black typing on a white or very pale ground is preferable. And PLEASE no flashing backgrounds - they trigger my migraines.
PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT ON OTHER PEOPLE'S ENTRIES UNTIL AFTER THE COMPETITION IS JUDGED
Prizes will be - 1st 3000 points - 2nd 2000 points, 3rd -1000 points, plus points for 3 - 10th places decreasing from 4th place - 800 points to 10th place 200 points.
A further 1000 points will be divided among the remaining relevant entries.
Please note that although (since this is a celebration!) I shall not disqualify poems that come with illustrations and/or notes, nevertheless, I do prefer my poems unadorned and "unexplained"

Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on November 26, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 3000, Silver: 2000, Bronze: 1000, Honorable mention: 5 people
- Final notes: Here at last are the results of my "CELEBRATING POETRY AND POETS" competition.
I apologize for the delay in judging it - this was due to computer problems.
I am now under pressure from the moderators to complete my judging - so I shall not stop just now to transcribe my notes into coherent form, but simply give you the list of placings - and outline the next step.
Namely: the top 10 poems are:
1. Under that poem - Cricketjeff
2 .Closing time at Laugharne - Mairi Beagh
3. Bill FitzStevens -Mairi Beagh
4.War poet - Cricketjeff
5. Defending the form - NeonRose
6. Her voice - Cricketjeff
7. If Shakespeare be the food of love -Mairi Beagh
8 The poet and the computer - Masterblaster
9. Who was this guy? - Neon Rose
10. By words be known -Neon Rose
Points for them are: 1st - 3000 points, 2nd -2000 points, 3rd 1000 points - which will be distributed by the system".
Poems in 4-th - 10th place are eligible for points as follows
4th - 800 points, 5th 700 points, 6th - 600 points 7th -500 points , 8th - 400 points, 9th - 300 points, 10th - 200 points.
These points will be distributed by me at the END of the "Commenting period" - provided that the poems are not removed before that period is over.
ADDED 13.xii.2008
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS
IS THE CORRECT LIST. I HAVE JUST NOTICED THAT somehow NeonRose's "By words be known" accidentally slipped down two places on the "system" list. This poem will, of course, receive its due 200 points for 10th place. However, to avoid disappointment, I shall also award Masterblaster's "The aspiring poet" the same number of points, so that it becomes, in effect, a "tied" first place.

================
COMMENTING PERIOD.
ALL poets who have entered the competition are eligible for bonus points by commenting on other entrants' work (providing that they have not commented on it prematurely, i.e. before I had judged the competition), and providing that they do not remove their own work from the competition before this period is over.
The commenting period will extend from NOW until midnight 8/9 January.
The rules for commenting are slightly different from my previous competitions - namely:
To earn a bonus of 100 points, you should comment on FIVE poems, one from the top 10, one from the "Very Highly Commended" List, one "Highly Commended", one "Commended" and one unplaced poem. (This last category includes a number of excellent pieces - from poets who, alas, had misunderstood the theme of the competition).
Comments should be relevant and meaningful, written in standard English (PLEASE try to avoid slang, jargon and text-speech!) and at least 50 words long - excluding any quotations.
When you have made your five comments, please send me an AM message that you have done so, listing the poems. (In spite of all my urging, some people will undoubtedly remove their poems before the commenting period is over - alas, this always happens - so sending me your list will make sure that your comments bring you your bonuses!)
And PLEASE remember - if you want your bonus points (either from commenting or from your work placing in the "Very Highly Commended", "Highly Commended" and "Commended" lists) you must leave ALL your poems in the competition until the commenting period is over.
I shall transcribe my notes on the competition and send them to you in the course of the next few days!

regarding the "Celebrating poetry and poets" competition, if you will send me links to your poems I shall consider them and if any win or place, I shall ask the moderators how to get them into the list.
I have been a little delayed in starting work on the competition - I came home from a conference to find my computer had been disconnected, and I had problems in establishing a connection. -
-
Vera Rich...
Thankyou for explaining and inviting me to do that....it's ok thankyou...if they don't appear in the list alls well...it'll simply be one of those things...am sorry to hear about your computer being disconnected...what an awful shock to find upon your return...I do hope you haven't lost any files...

I am amazed and honoured to have placed so highly with all three poems I entered, I can only thank-you for undertaking such an onerus and diligently executed task.
I have read many of the poems and there are some remarkable ones here.
