I'm a big-city kid from Seattle living in a small mountain town in WV. I've still got my long hair & goatee, I drive "defensively" (sometimes I make my wife grab the handle
), and when I come home from work it's not uncommon to have Extreme, Alice Cooper, Collective Soul, Asia or Creed crankin' in the car...One thing I don't miss is the "always gotta be doin' something NOW" attitude of city life, the constant rushing, being stuck in traffic, and rude people.
Living in a small town may not have all the "stuff" of the big-city, but folk seem to be nicer, the home-cooked food is incredible, it's quiet at night (people actually relax!)...

Anyway, I came across this song on the radio while working one day ~ "Holler Back" by The Lost Trailers. It's become one of my faves & serves as the inspiration for this contest. Check out the video on YouTube, read the lyrics & write me something about livin' down home ~ whatever down home is for you, it doesn't have to be the American South (if you're from Down Unda it can be The Outback! No, not the steakhouse...).
What I don't want:
- Redneck bashing/mocking
- KKK or racial slurs
- Cliche
- Any negativity or cussing
- God/Bible-belt bashing
- TyPiNg LiKe ThIs or txt
- Erotica or sensual
What I do want:
- Keep it clean & fun, this is open to all ages. I don't mind mention of girls in Daisy Dukes, just don't be drooling all over them

- No line limit, but please be reasonable.
- Down-home comforts, memories, good times...
- Lyrics welcome
- Keep it light, if I get lost in the holler of yer metaphor I may not make it out...
- Have fun! This is not a critical contest, just use common sense & spell check (unless y'all are usin' intentional slang). If I can read it with a smile, a laugh, or comforting thought then you're probably on the right track

I got a city folk friend in a hip-hop world
He goes by E. Diddy but his name is Earl
Cocks his hat to the side in his Grandma's ride
Pumpin' nothin' but bass
He says things like, 'Dawg, are you down with that'
And, 'Don't that fly girl got some back'
And I feel so doggone outta place
When he says,
'Holler back when you get back home'
I say, 'The only holler back that I know is'
(Chorus)
In that holler back in the woods
Where the country folks got it good
Homebrewed, homegrown
Where the wild seeds 'a get sown
It's a blast from the past
All the cowgirls shakin' their sassafras
Let out a howl if 'ya feel like 'ya gotta
If you wanna go on back to the holler
Holler back
Take a left off the Interstate
Go ten miles
Take a right on Farm Road 99
And just roll 'til the blacktop ends
'Ya see Mary Jo rockin' that front porch swing
Bikini top and them cut-off jeans
And that's where Hillbilly Heaven begins
Ah, she'll pour 'ya some of that cherry wine
Boy, you're guaranteed to have yourself
One hell of a time
(Chorus 2x)
(Homebrewed, homegrown
Where the wild seeds a get sown
It's a blast from the past
All the cowgirls shakin' their sassafras
Homebrewed, homegrown
Where the wild seeds a get sown)
Ooh...
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on December 7, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 400, Silver: 300, Bronze: 200, Honorable mention: 7 people
- Final notes: Thank you everyone ~
I apologize for the delay in judging, but in the holler as well as any town/city/dot on the map: life happens.
This is not a PIF, so I'm not expecting Gold to do anything more than enjoy the shinie & points. I've added more HMs because this was a good contest & I enjoyed them all: each writer in this contest had something of worth and I appreciate you all for taking time to enter.
Gold, Silver & Bronze are in order, HMs not so much.
Thanks again~
Tim

It's a play on words:
[from the lyrics to Holler Back:]
When he says,
'Holler back when you get back home'
I say, 'The only holler back that I know is'
(Chorus)
In that holler back in the woods
Where the country folks got it good
Homebrewed, homegrown
Where the wild seeds 'a get sown
It's a blast from the past
All the cowgirls shakin' their sassafras
Let out a howl if 'ya feel like 'ya gotta
If you wanna go on back to the holler

Didn't realize this was a contest when I clicked, but love the idea -- heard the song on my fav station some time back, and thought it was great. I'm part Texan, part Minnesotan, all small-town girl trapped in big-town life -- I may or may not enter, but surely will read the entries!
-
I clicked this, totally intriuged by the title, not knowing it was a contest. Great idea, I will think on this and see if I can't find my muse sipping some sweet tea under the magnolia tree.
-
-
Hi Michelle ~
I'd be honored if your muse inspires words for this contest! I also have another contest for the ladies if'n y'all are interested:
