hmm, I love that poem; it is one of my favorites but I had completely forgotten that it is the foreword in my old "The Children's Longfellow" that I grew up with and only discovered again a couple weeks ago when I happened to be visiting my parents. I had forgotten it though it must have inspired the title poem in my collection, "Advice to a Young Bivouac." People have asked me what a bivouac was. If I ever knew as a kid what the Bivouac of Life was, it must have filtered down into my subconscious like pine needles settling.
