Update (10/09) I need some more entries, quality entries, or else I will have no choice but to cancel this contest. Please give me some good writing!
It has been quite awhile since I've had a contest. But I have some points to give out and I am in the mood to read some good things. The idea for this contest is symbiosis, or feeding off of each other. You will feed off of one of the choices for inspiration, and if I like your work, I might just feed off of yours. So I hope you can deliver. Here are the options:
1. Iron and Wine (Sam Beam)
2. Sylvia Plath
3. Tori Amos
4. Damien Rice
5. Suzanne Vega
6. John Lennon
Update October 17th
I still would like to see some more entries! It would be an added plus if you were inspired by "Innocent Bones" (option 1), the lyrics can be found on my author page. You need to hear the song too though if you haven't already!
The idea is to use the words/lyrics as a vehicle of inspiration to write your poem. Please be individual, i.e. no copycat work. I will say here that I would love to see the first option used.
If there are a lot of poems I might give out honorable mentions with points.
Currently I am limiting to one poem per person, but if I don't have too many entries I may change that. Also, if you happen to have any pre-writes which fit the criteria and you want to enter, just send me a link and I will let you know what I think. Lastly, please don't enter if you don't like constructive, honest feedback on your work.
Any other questions, just im me.
Enjoy!
Contest is Over
- Contest was judged on December 20, 2008
- Rewards: Gold: 500, Silver: 250, Bronze: 125
- Final notes: Thanks to all who entered. I would have liked to comment on each one, but school and my family keep me incredibly busy. If there is anyone who would still like to have a comment, you may ask for one.
Some of the entries did not apply to the contest at all. This is not surprising to me; I have judged many contests and have come to expect it. Many entries, however, did utilize contest specifics. Thanks to those who made the effort.
I kept the contest open until I felt that I was satisfied with the entries. The gold entry makes me glad that I kept it open.
I hope you all enjoy your holidays!
~Lea

Oh this is such a cool contest! All of the choices are really awesomely inspiring. Wish I could enter but I'm not feeling very inspired lately. Regardless of my not entering, I hope you'll have a good time judging this contest.

Hi Justine
Well you know what they tell us in my poetry class? That not having inspiration is no excuse for not writing.
And I think they're right. Writing births inspiration, not the other way around. Before I started this class, I felt like I was blocked. Now I have all sorts of inspiration. I really miss your writing. I hope you start writing again soon.

hmmm I think you're right. And I'm just lazy.
I should write something, I really should. Don't think I want to though. But I should. Maybe I'll enter this.

Hey this sounds like a good contest, i love he idea, and your inspiration choices are cool, which is good as I feel in need of inspiration, I am also a John lennon fan, so maybe i will try to come up with something, thanks for bothering to host a contest hope you enjoy reading the entries, maybe even min e littlefishone

This looks like a great contest. I'll have to see if I can think of something for it.
-
I'm gonna rack my brain to come up with something, my fellow Iron & Wine fan. (I noticed on your MySpace page you even went to the ORIGINAL version of Jezebel; big big kudos!)
-
seeing as Suzanne Vega is the reason I started writing poetry in the first place I am totally going to enter! awesome contest.
-
Iron & Wine ^-^ awesome

Pity. I have a lovely piece that a Tori quote inspired but it's a prewrite.

Pre- Writes
If you allowed pre-writes you would receive more entries. You could stipulate october entries only
thus avoiding the old worn out poems George ++++ -

Really?! I'll get more entries if I allow pre-writes? I didn't know that!!

I don't want quantity, I want quality. I have held eighty some contests and I hate getting a crapload of bad pre-writen poems. Which is why I allow them on a case by case basis, as I stated in the contest quite clearly: \"Also, if you happen to have any pre-writes which fit the criteria and you want to enter, just send me a link and I will let you know what I think."\

Thank you for the gold! Great contest idea - loved the inspiration choices. Look forward to your next.

You are welcome! By the way I noticed that some suggested you revise the poem. While I am all for revision, I must say I think it is great as is! Sometimes it's good to just leave things alone and I think this is true in this case. =P
Enjoy your holidays!
